Being commercial fishers ourselves, we understand the pride Australian commercial fishers have in their industry and the seafood product they supply. We love to do our bit in correctly identifying seafood products and the fishers who catch them. It is made all that easier when we source locally from professional fishers that have sustainability and qualit...y goals at the forefront of their fishing businesses. This media story does confuse a few issues though. The sustainability of Australian fisheries is better than it has ever been, and we are world leaders in fisheries management best practice. Only a handful of fished species are in a position of concern in Australia. Happily, active management programs are in place and those species of concern are rebuilding as a direct result of management intervention. Importantly, your regular consumption of fish & chips does not put you at risk of eating an critically endangered species, as this story insinuates. Furthermore, with world's best fisheries management practice in place, the fish species we serve are certified sustainable. Claimed "independently produced" Safe Seafood Guides are a dime a dozen, and we urge cautious use and interpretation. Why? Guides often contradict each other, and there is no transparency of process. For those that don't know, Renae and Andy both have doctorates - Renae in social and ecological systems as they apply to fisheries issues, while Andy expertise lies within the day-to-day operations and management of Australian fisheries. We kind of know some stuff! Rather than rely on a mysterious guide, get to know your local fishers and seafood mongers, you'll be surprised at what information they can offer.
