24.01.2022 Well, last month flew by in typical frenetic fashion. The significant date in the year for me is 1 August: once we reach then, the rest of the calendar year is a blur. Tax season is a challenge for us, trying to balance deadlines, manage our expanding list of jobs and navigate our way around frequently changing tax legislation. The huge positive, though, is the opportunity it gives us to interact with our clients. Talking to you is the aspect of our job that we absolutely love. A quick phone chat or friendly email/text makes an enormous difference to our day. We really do appreciate that so many of you have supported us for a long time. Its a privilege to have your support and to be included in parts of your lives that have nothing to do with tax!

15.01.2022 The ATO is now processing the low and middle income tax offset recently passed by Parliament.

15.01.2022 A new financial year allows heralds taxation changes. But this year seems to be bigger than most and we have done a dizzying amount of further education to keep up to date. The ATO has identified a high error rate in claims made on individual tax returns. In addition, deductions claimed have been spiralling each year. The ATO is consequently directing more compliance resources to individual tax returns. One of the most significant developments for individual taxpayers is the ...introduction of a mandatory Deductions Schedule for claims at Items D1 to D15 on your tax return. This covers work-related expenses (motor vehicle, travel, clothing, self-education and general expenses), interest and dividend deductions, donations, personal superannuation contributions and other claims such as income protection insurance premiums. So what does this mean for you? Basically, you will need to provide more detailed information of expenses you are claiming on your tax return. You will also need to justify their relevance, again on your tax return. This is huge because the ATO will use this information to determine whether or not to review your claims. So, if we seem to be grilling you for further information, understand that this is only to assist you to be compliant. Our position is that it is always better to sail under the ATOs radar!

12.01.2022 On the subject of scams..... some mob is ringing people purporting to be from the Client Support Group. I received a call last week from mobile number 0435 359194 (Google it and you will see all the complaints.) When I asked what organisation or government department the Client Support Group belonged to, I got a vague answer about helping people who are entitled to government incentives. We kept going around in circles re their identity so I asked for the ABN of the organisation. The caller quickly launched into her "do I have a mortgage" spiel. When she finally paused for breath, I pointed out she had contacted a Registered Tax Agent. She hung up.

10.01.2022 Tax scams are back in the news!! https://www.abc.net.au//australians-receiving-rec/11314378 If you receive a phone call from someone phoning on behalf of the ATO, 99.999999% of the time it will be a scam. Always tell the caller to contact your registered tax agent THEN HANG UP. If it is a genuine ATO matter, they will know how to contact us.... Our phone number is recorded on the cover page of your tax return, so we are first point of contact if there is an issue. We never give out your phone number even for genuine ATO requests. Should we feel that you need to talk to the ATO, we will obtain details for you to initiate contact with them. Sadly, scamming is becoming more sophisticated. We receive dodgy emails on an almost daily basis. Here is an ATO link for your reference. https://www.ato.gov.au//Onl/Identity-security/Scam-alerts/ Always feel free to give us a call if you have any concerns.

08.01.2022 Helen here. Its been seven years since we moved from Brisbane to live on our little rural plot. My desk faces west towards Cunninghams Gap. The view is something special and why I like to work from home so much. These photos were taken in a hurry, on an old phone and in the cold so my hands were shaking. Not the best quality but worth sharing nonetheless.

03.01.2022 PAYG Payment Summaries (groups certificates for us older folk) are being retired. You may be aware that all employers will be reporting wages and superannuation information in real time from 1 July 2019. Your year-to-date tax and superannuation information will be available in ATO online services, via a myGov account. More detailed information is in this link.... https://www.ato.gov.au///information%20for%20employees.pdf Information on how to set up a new myGov account is contained in this link. https://www.ato.gov.au//Sin/Setting-up-your-myGov-account/ If you already have a myGov account, link it to ATO online services. You should be able to see your wages and year-to-date balances within a day or two after being paid. At the end of each financial year, an electronic Income Statement will be uploaded to your myGov account. This replaces the old PAYG Payment Summary. Accountants and tax agents will be able to access your Income Statement details once they are uploaded.
