19.01.2022 Today is National Flag Day. On this day in 1901, what is now known as the Australian National Flag was first publicly flown in Australia. Prime Minister Edmund ...Barton unveiled the Flag during a special ceremony in Melbourne, following a nationwide design competition. The Australian National Flag has three elements on a blue background: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross, visible only in the southern hemisphere and a reminder of Australias geography. 18.01.2022 After a bit of discussion, the team has decided to put passenger services on hold for a few weeks while the Wacol outbreak of covid is active in the local commu...nity. As much as we would love to run, public safety and the safety of our volunteers comes first. Works and test trains will still be in operation during this time so please remember to keep away from the tracks. Photo Lance Castle

16.01.2022 My husband, Michael, and I love the Sandgate/Shorncliffe area, especially the Pier. I thought this group might like to see these paintings which are part of Michaels next exhibition in October. The exhibition is called "Where We Live". https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCawdreyArt/

10.01.2022 Gavel is the first canine to be officially appointed Queenslands Vice-Regal Dog, but he is not the only four-legged friend to visit or call Fernberg home. In ...the 1950s, Sir John and Lady Lavarack lived at Government House with their much-loved Scottish Terrier, Monty. He lived his best life at Fernberg and was buried in a shaded spot on the estate. A plaque records that the six-year-old went to the Happy Hunting Grounds on 1 November, 1953. In 1960, another garden plot was assigned to Bengie, the faithful friend and companion of Sir Henry and Lady Abel-Smith. And Gavel isnt the first of his breed to call Fernberg home Ms Leneen Fordes dog George was also a German shepherd. The current Governors two Grand-doggies Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pups Bella and Digger have also visited the estate.

10.01.2022 Harold Wilson, the author of "A Rats Tale" became a school inspector and lived to a good old age. Mr Wilsons father was school principal at Toogoolawah in the 1920s. Harold was born and had his childhood in Toogoolawah.

08.01.2022 Bet you didn't know this!

08.01.2022 This is amazing and I had never heard about it.

07.01.2022 From the QT Saturday 15th October 1932 OLD BRISBANE RIVER LANDMARK. Recently one of the old landmarks at the head of the Brisbane River... districts was sold. This was the old stone house property of 5600 acres freehold. The house was widely known to old-time travelers by the mail coach running through the Blackbutt Range to Nanango, where horses were changed and meals were served. It Is about one mile from Moore township. For many years it was in the possession of the Wil- liams family, who held it as a cattle grazing property. In recent years it has been leased for cattle fattening by Mr. E. P. Tilley, of Beaudesert. and his son, Mr. John Tilley, has purchased it outright. Mount Stanley, situated, past Linville, at the head of the Brisbane River, has been sold on behalf of Mr. William Hayes to Lord Brothers, formerly of Esk- dale. These propertles were sold by Mactaggarts Co-operative Associa- tion, Ltd., of Brisbane. See more

07.01.2022 Random Fact of the Day: In certain parts of Suffolk, England, you can find "wavy" brick walls. Interestingly, the design uses fewer bricks than a straight wall.... A straight wall that is just one brick thick is not sturdy enough to stand alone & can be easily toppled, so they generally have a thickness of at least two or more layers of bricks, & are also reinforced at regular intervals with vertical posts serving as buttresses. But a wavy "one-brick" wall stands just fine on its own due to the arch support provided by its shape, which combines both fence & buttress. Such a structure is called a "crinkle crankle wall". #randomfactswithmatt Like this post? You many also enjoy my daily facts at my Random Facts with Matt page.

04.01.2022 Hello to all our lovely stallholders and market-goers. We are not able to hold the markets this weekend but plan to restart our program of holding the markets o...n the second Saturday of each month from October. We know it has been a long delay but the nature of our site makes it more difficult to manage to meet essential COVID19 regulations. We will be in touch with stallholders in the next three weeks to advise what their responsibilities are. We look forward to seeing all of you on Saturday 10th October all being well. See more

04.01.2022 And another unknown woman of history!

04.01.2022 On this day in 1940, Queensland Governor Sir Leslie Wilson and his wife Lady Wilson attended the annual Garden Party at Coochin Coochin Homestead near Boonah to... support wartime fund raising for the Red Cross, the Comforts Fund and the district Ambulance. Heritage listed Coochin Coochin established in 1842 as one of the earliest pastoral runs in the Moreton area had also developed into an important social hub, over the years attracting distinguished visitors such as Lord and Lady Chelmsford, Edward, Prince of Wales, the Queen Mother, and even Agatha Christie! Aside from the picturesque location, part of the allure was the famed hospitality of owner Gertrude Bell, who encouraged notable guests to plant a tree on the property to commemorate their visit. The first two trees (jacarandas) were planted in 1907 by the Chelmfords. It was also Gertrude Bells idea to hold a party in the delightful gardens surrounding the homestead, initially to support returned World War 1 soldiers. This developed into an annual event, one much anticipated in the social calendar. At the party held in 1940 (12 months after the commencement of World War II) when Sir Leslie opened the event, he commented that year after year, Mrs Bell had aided all worthy causes with the proceeds of an annual garden party. Coochin Coochin Homestead remains one of the Scenic Rims oldest homes, and is still owned and maintained by the Bell family. Sir Leslie went on to become Queenslands longest serving Governor, providing conspicuous support to organisations like the Red Cross throughout the years covering the Second World War. Mrs Kaye de Jersey continues that legacy as current Red Cross Queensland Patron. Images courtesy of the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Heritage Register.
