25.01.2022 Here's a great explanation of why mindfulness works

24.01.2022 When in a state of anxiety or in the midst of a meltdown, our brains can be compared to a snow globe that has been shaken vigorously. Our thoughts and emotions mixed together, swirling around and contributing to uncomfortable feelings. There is no clarity until the snow settles. Mindfulness is how we settle. Given the Stage 4 lock down we are currently experiencing in Melbourne, it may be the perfect time to introduce your child to the benefits of mindfulness.

17.01.2022 Mindfulness can work for everyone. It just takes a few minutes practice a day. I found these benefits listed in a great article "23 Amazing Health Benefits of Mindfulness for Body and Brain," published by the Positive Psychology group. Click on the link below for more detailed reading. 23 Benefits: Decreased stress and psychological distress in adults and employees; Enhanced mental health and functioning;... Increased emotion regulation and self-control; Decreased anxiety, depression, worry, and rumination; Reduced incidence of problem drinking and symptoms associated with problem drinking; Enhanced academic achievement in students, due to improved ability to focus and improved attention; Improved social and relational skills; Reduction in aggression and problem behaviours in children; Reduced symptoms of burnout in employees; A decrease in turnover and turnover intentions at work; Enhanced job performance; Increased ability to cope with bullying; Enhanced resilience in children. https://positivepsychology.com/benefits-of-mindfulness/ See more

16.01.2022 Mindfulness is a basic life-skill that I believe all children should have access to. When children have a range of mindfulness strategies to draw on when faced with challenges in life, they become empowered to de-stress, calm down, negotiate difficult emotions, improve focus and become less anxious for themselves. Of course this takes awareness and practice. So for this month, each Monday I will share with you a mindful practice. It is always best to introduce and practice... each new strategy in calmer moments. If you are keen to know more detail about the benefits of mindfulness for children and teens, refer to last weeks post. Today's tool is one of Chris Bergstrom's. Enjoy. https://blissfulkids.com/mindfulness-for-children-take-fiv/

10.01.2022 Convincing teens about the benefits of mindfulness can be challenging. In her book Mindfulness for Teens, Jennie Battistin explains the particular benefits of mindfulness for teens. These include: * training the brain not to be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going on around us * learning to take control of big emotions * helping to tap into their inner strength and resilience * responding better to stress... * improving relationships with family and friends * helping to improve concentration, leading towards improved school performance. In short, the mindfulness habit practised consistently can help to * create calm * improve focus * manage emotions * manage self-talk. The practice need only take a few minutes a day. The key is consistency. See more

08.01.2022 After a couple of interesting discussions this week I thought it might be timely to mention the great work being done by all the parents out there. Having your children at home, inside, for most of the day and trying to home school is no easy task. Just remember to cut yourself some slack. What we have been asked to do in Melbourne is difficult, there is no rule book. There are all sorts of changes happening to and around us. Most of us are just trying to do the best we can. Be realistic about what you expect from yourself and your family in such demanding times. Treat yourself as you would a friend, be patient, be kind and be forgiving.
