25.01.2022 It is book week this week, and so we take a look at one Collegian who is at a very exciting point in her career as an author - Amelia Mellor, TC’11, has just last month had her very first novel ‘The Grandest Bookshop in the World’ published. Amelia has dreamed of being a writer since she was just three years old and took up every opportunity at Toorak College to help bring her dream to life. Amelia was TC’s resident playwright in Year 11, before becoming the literary prefec...t in Year 12. Following her time at Toorak, Amelia headed to Melbourne University to study creative writing where she completed a thesis on the reinvention of the Industrial Revolution in children’s fantasy literature. In 2018, she won the May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust’s Ian Wilson Memorial Fellowship for her book The Grandest Bookshop in the World. Her other writing credits include a 2018 ASA Award Mentorship and a finalist place in the 2016 Grace Marion Wilson Emerging Writers’ Contest. In her debut book, the story begins in 1893 at Cole’s Book Arcade in Melbourne - the grandest bookshop in the world. Pearl and Vally Cole have to save their Pa from the mysterious Obscurosmith by midnight, or they will forget that he and his book arcade ever existed. Soon they are swept into a dangerous game with impossibly high stakes. 24.01.2022 This week we sat down with Collegian Brooke Barling TC12 to find out what she has been up to, living in the ACT. Brooke moved to Canberra to commence work with the Department of Defence though their Graduate Program, and has since remained there, working in joint environments alongside members of the ADF, supporting the development of strategic policy, military strategy and capability acquisition. Brooke is passionate about her role and accredits the vast array of opportuni...ties available within her industry for keeping her motivated and engaged. Brooke reflects It constantly shocks me just how tangible results are - one day I am writing a submission to government explaining why we need a new capability (for example an armoured vehicle) and what it can offer, and a year or so later I am climbing all over it and watching the ADF demonstrate how they use it in a war fighting environment. The industry is incredibly innovative, fast paced, and offers insight into the forefront of scientific, engineering, and technological advancements. In such a challenging role, Brooke reflects on her time at Toorak College setting her up for success my days at Toorak College helped me build resilience in the face of challenges and showed me how to work effectively in a fast paced, competitive environment. Committed to a long-term career with the Department of Defence, Brooke is currently undertaking a Masters in Special Operations and Irregular Warfare, to help broaden her understanding of military operations and how the ADF can be used as a Whole-of-Government tool. Brooke is currently a member of the Toorak College Empower Network LinkedIn Group and would be pleased to speak to any young alumni or students who may be considering joining an APS Graduate Program. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours Brooke and cant wait to see what the future holds for you! 23.01.2022 Today we celebrate another talented Collegian writer as part of Book Week 2020 Kezia Brett TC’00 published her first book ‘From Above the Clouds’ in 2017. This heart-warming children’s book is a story of family, community, and the love, hopes, and dreams that accompany new life. As the synopsis reads Grace’s parents tell the magical tale of how as a sick baby, her determined spirit and the love of family and friends, helped guide her into the world. From Above the Clouds... is inspired by a Kezia’s personal experience - in 2016, Kezia’s unborn daughter was diagnosed with a rare condition called congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Sadly shortly after she was born, little Olive passed away. It was important to Kezia to turn such loss into something positive, and so the idea of creating an uplifting story that celebrates the coming together of a family and community when a baby is born, came about. Kezia says, While inspired by this sad time, ‘From Above the Clouds’ is its own story one that is joyous and has a happy ending. This experience reminded me about the importance of community. It also taught me about the resilience of the human spirit and how in challenging times we can come together to overcome adversity. I wanted to create a book that teaches this to children in an entertaining way, and supports them to develop empathy, resilience, and community connectedness. Since its release, ‘From Above the Clouds’ has resonated with many children that relate to Grace’s experience after their own difficult start to life. To read more about Kezia’s journey and this beautiful book that is loved by children and parents alike, visit Fierce Grace Publishing or https://www.fiercegracepublishing.com.au/ See more

21.01.2022 We recently caught up with Lena Klein TC’13, who shared with us her exciting journey, which has led her to Dublin, Ireland to pursue her passion. At the age of just 15, Lena began to understand the power of communication through online channels, when she noticed some of her younger TC peers watching her self-made YouTube clips during their lunch break. Coupled with her love of art and storytelling, Lena set about growing her Instagram, Podcast and Patreon followers, allowing... her to share her life experiences and creativity with the world. After completing a degree in Journalism and Philosophy, followed by a Masters in Digital Marketing Strategy, Lena was accepted into the Business Leadership Program at LinkedIn - a rotational graduate scheme designed to shape people into future leaders and sales professionals. Using the skills learned through this program, Lena has been consulting for companies on their learning strategies, and showing them how LinkedIn Learning can help bridge skills gaps. In speaking about her line of work, Lena notes on paper, I work in sales, but there’s a lot more to it I work in the tech field, which is fascinating, fast paced and constantly changing, and I help businesses solve real problems. The products I sell improve the lives of those who use them at LinkedIn, each time I’m successful, someone gains access to learning. Lena is shortly taking up her next exciting role with global customer service software company Zendesk, where she will be helping growing companies improve their customer support strategies. In reflecting on how her time at Toorak College has helped her along the way, Lena says being part of the Toorak community, I felt very lucky. I didn’t become the person I am today until a few years after graduating, but I was inspired by my Toorak peers to work hard it was an environment in which trying your best was really valued, and that instilled very powerful lessons in me. I loved walking through those beautiful buildings and gardens, and I’ll never forget the empathy, humour, and determination of those who taught me. We wish you all the best in continuing to pursue your dreams Lena! 19.01.2022 In recognition of International Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate the success of one of our Collegians, Kerry Turnock (TC’88). After graduating from university with a Master of Science (Geology) Kerry embarked on a professional life within the resource sector. A mine geologist was the first step in Kerry’s career, and she has since gone on to become an exploration geologist, mine scheduler, shipping superintendent and manager of technical marketing. Kerry is now working ...with BHP as Practice Lead Global Resource Characterisation in their Resource Centre of Excellence. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, achievement has come from diligence, determination, competency, a strong work ethic, self-confidence, and resilience. Kerry has had many wonderful opportunities to work in some of Australia’s most spectacular and remote locations and to challenge herself in ways she could never have thought possible. #InternationalWomeninEngineeringDay #WomeninEngineering #Engineering

18.01.2022 Happy Birthday Toorak College Mount Eliza! Each year on the 14th April we celebrate Foundation Day, marking the anniversary of the laying of the Foundation Stone in the Hamilton Building in 1928. Right from the beginning, it was clear that Toorak College was a special place. An extract from the 1929 School Magazine proudly shares the School Column of the "Argus in 1929, written by the "Prelector" of the magazine who had visited Toorak College: "Toorak College is now firml...y established in its new home at Frankston, and already has acquired an atmosphere which is remarkable, seeing that this is only the end of the first term. The traditions and customs of the old school in Toorak have been transplanted to the new quarters. I had the pleasure of being shown over the School a few days ago by the principals, the Misses Hamilton, and I could not realise that the School had been there less than six months. On all sides there is evidence of care and interest of the development of all that goes to make a school. The cloisters almost make one think one is in an old English school, and, as I wandered through the halls and the grounds and saw the quadrangle, with its wealth of fescue grass, I could not help contrasting the school with similar institutions of 25 years ago. Everything seemed to have been done to provide comfort, but there is a practical utility about it which is admirable. The educational world is enriched by the enterprise and liberality of the parents of the girls of Toorak College, who, realising that the School was doomed to extinction unless some drastic steps were taken, came to the rescue, and the fine school buildings at Frankston are the result. This action of the parents marks an important development in school life in Victoria." See more

They cant see their friends. And this is happening at a time when they would normally be embracing new freedoms and make big decisions about their lives. 15.01.2022 The Toorak Collegians Association recently caught up with Ruby Awburn TC08 to find out more about her professional journey to Boston where she is now completing a two-year fellowship at the Harvard Art Museums, in the Straus Centre for Conservation and Technical Studies. Ruby decided she wanted to be a painting conservator as she was entering VCE at Toorak College. She loved both art and science at school with her art teacher, Mrs Emma Cleine, being instrumental in her love ...for art history, and biology teacher, Mrs Linda Howey, being influential in her love for science. Post school, Ruby went to the University of Melbourne for a Bachelor of Arts, where she majored in Art History and Anthropology, with a minor in Chemistry. To support herself, she worked in a print shop, selling art by local artists, and at an artists agency, representing local artists and assisting with commissions. Ruby then went on to complete her Masters in Cultural Materials Conservation, where she specialised in paintings. During this time, Ruby volunteered with the Koorie Heritage Trust and interned at the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art. Realising there were not many pathways into museum conservation work in Australia, Ruby set her sights overseas. In 2018, Ruby spent 5 months in New York, interning at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) before heading to Boston for her two-year fellowship at the Harvard Art Museums, in the Straus Centre for Conservation and Technical Studies. At the Harvard Art Museums, Ruby assists with the maintenance, care and research of the collections Modern and Contemporary paintings. This includes cleaning; removing old, discoloured varnishes; repairing tears in canvas; adhering paint flakes back to the support disguising losses; and researching causes a paintings degradation. She works with the Museums Conservation Scientists to identify materials, whether for research or for practical purposes such as treatment. Ruby also teaches students from Harvard and other institutions about technical art history and painting conservations role within a museum. Reflecting on her time at Toorak College, Ruby notes it taught me to set and accomplish goals. It was an environment where I was encouraged to follow my passions, supported by my friends and teachers. Toorak taught me valuable life lessons about the importance of community, and that women can do anything they set their minds to. On her future, Ruby notes with the current world pandemic and other crises occurring worldwide, my future is going to be flexible. I have one year left in Boston, then I will see what opportunities await. The only certainty I know is that art has made such a large impact on my life, and I would love to be working in a museum, making paintings accessible to the public. Best of luck Ruby, we look forward to following your journey! Photo - Ruby working on Fuyu by Kumi Sugai, 1960, Harvard Art Museums.

15.01.2022 Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 Senior School students were fortunate enough to hear from many Collegians recently as part of the Empower Network speaker series, which aims to connect current students with alumni who are willing to share their insights and knowledge on their professions. Dr Arna Karick TC’94 was one such Collegian that spoke to students about her fascinating career in the tech/science industry to date. So far Arna’s career has been a whirlwind journey of living and working around the globe...; first studying and working as an astrophysicist in Australia, the US, and UK; then moving back to Australia to work in a research data and computing strategy role at Swinburne University; while also working as a technologist and designer to help non-profits and social entrepreneurs develop tech for social good. Arna is now in the midst of her third career change, working as a freelance data scientist and designer in Melbourne. In speaking of her life long love of Science, Arna reflects I absolutely love science and technology. The chance to work on cutting edge projects with incredibly talented, clever people is so much fun, and I love the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself. and on the world of tech and science being a male dominated industry It never occurred to me that I couldn’t be a scientist. The notion that girls can’t (or shouldn’t) do physics or science was completely lost on me. I’m pretty sure I have Toorak College and science and maths classrooms full of girls to thank for that. From here, Arna has her sights set on continuing in the tech industry, specifically in using artificial intelligence to create products and services that make everyday life better. Well done Arna on following your passion and always continuing to look for the opportunities to explore your industry further. 11.01.2022 Collegians and sisters Laura and Sally Panton are making headlines this month for their involvement in the future of COVID-19 testing. Laura and Sally are Directors of Pantonic Health, a medical supplies and services organisation, who are among a small handful of Australian distributors ready to roll out rapid coronavirus antigen tests following approvals by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. They are low-cost, easy to use, point-of-care devices that produce results in 10... minutes. Laura Panton told The Australian. We see our rapid antigen tests being particularly important for frequent testing in high-risk settings such as hospitals and aged-care facilities, and more widely for large workforces and major events, and will allow for the safe and cost-effective opening of interstate and international borders. We will be eagerly following Laura and Sally's story while the Health Protections Principals Committee (HPPC) considers how these products can be used here in Australia in the future. 05.01.2022 Its National Science Week this week and so we sat down with current Biomedical Science student at ACU, Maddie Smith TC 17, to see what it is about this industry that she is drawn to. Maddie was first inspired to enter into the field of Science after growing up admiring medical professionals and their ability to change peoples lives. Maddie knew that a degree in Biomedical Science had the ability to open many doors and allow her to choose from a number of different options... for her future. This year marks Maddies final year completing her degree; and she has hopes to next commence a Masters in Radiation Therapy with a view to working on treating cancer patients with Radiotherapy. Maddies advice for anyone considering joining this industry is Dont ever think that something you dont get or dont understand now is standing in the way of you succeeding in a science degree or a career in science. Click here to read the full Q&A article with Maddie: https://www.toorakcollege.vic.edu.au/coll/maddie-smith-tc17 Maddie will also feature as one of our guest Collegian science industry panellists on the Empower Network Speaker Series webinar being held on the 3rd September at 12:45pm. Toorak Collegian Paige Harris TC'11, from Amavi Meditation would like the share the below message with her fellow Collegians: On this day as we focus on asking others if they are ok and on checking in on our mental health. Id like to leave you these gentle suggestions. If you are feeling unheard, unseen or unsupported, can you look at the ways in which you can GIVE su...pport to another, and then gently ask the universe that that support also be returned to you. And when you see someone who you feel needs support, might I suggest when you speak with them, that you use the word we. We can be the most blessed thing to hear, when you feel no hope, when you feel alone, just to hear the words Ok what can WE do to make this better ah, well just the word could soothe a hurting soul in an instant. That word alone has made me relax at times I thought it all seemed impossible. And that word alone makes me feel, well anything but alone! So the next time you think to ask someone if they are ok, can you respond using the word WE? And finally, I ask you to consider that when you choose to believe that on your best days, that everything is in alignment and working out exactly as it was supposed to, that perhaps you can challenge yourself to believe and trust, that even on your worst days, perhaps everything is still unfolding exactly as it was supposed to. Can you trust that this might be the re-route gifted to you, to alter your path, to alter your perception, to encourage an opening of your mind, heart and spirit? On this day, I challenge you to believe that everything is working out as it is supposed to, to challenge yourself to enjoy and to trust in BOTH the ebbs AND the flows. All my love, Paige, Amavi Meditation
