23.01.2022 I hope everyone had a wonderful start to the new year. I moved to a new/regular house sit on New Years Day. A little story for you...I was telling a friend that if the opportunity ever came up, I would take the last dog I cared for in a heartbeat as he is one of my favourites and I just love him. My friend laughed out loud! Me: What are you laughing at?... Friend: You say that about all of them. 10.01.2022 People ask me how/why I started on this amazing house sitting journey...so here is a little story from this nomad... Five years ago, I started house sitting full time. In the ten years leading up to that I did a few house sits to get some space from a dysfunctional relationship (which died a horrid death anyway). When I gave up my rented unit to house sit, and that is a story in itself, I thought house sitting would last a few months at most. Now six years later, I struggle w...ith the idea of staying in one place, so I will keep doing this until the perfect permanent home comes to me. Sometimes I have a couple of weeks to a month when I am couch surfing. I stay with a friend, like this amazing globe-trotting couple or another nomadic woman who have all become dear friends. As a house sitter I do need to be adaptable, to commit to adapting to new and even uncomfortable situations. I have built resources like a couple of friends who love to have me stay for a few days to a week or two, and a car that will accommodates my travelling stuff. I have a smaller style SUV which I love. I have learned over time what fits in and how it all fits when I move houses. I still search for the right bags and plastic boxes. I also have a rented shed (in a secure facility) where I store all my stuff (furniture etc). It has become a monkey on my back though. But I digress, and that is another story for another time. I am a gardener at heart and over the decades I have created and left behind some pretty fantastic gardens at houses I have owned. My ‘thing’ is growing food and I do very much miss having my own garden to eat from. Sometimes I stay in a place that has its own vegie garden and even a small orchard. That is a luxury I absolutely revel in. I often plant some herbs like basil or thyme, or quick vegies like lettuce or rocket and consider it a gift for the returning owners. House sitting is a mixed bag but mostly it’s good to be free and great to be able to save money. There are some cons but if you are careful about who you house sit for, they are minimalwell for me that is. If you are thinking of hiring a house sitter, subscribe to this blog and I will give you all the tips you need to survive it with minimal hiccups. There were many pitfalls in the beginning of this amazing journey. I made mistakes and my clients made mistakes. Yes, they mostly sorted out in the end, but I did lose one couple who had become dear friends along the way. But then life is like that yes?
