25.01.2022 : Last week, as part of the QLD Community Cabinet process in Cairns, Mayor Mosby announced Councils 2020 Deputation Priority Areas. 24.01.2022 Today, the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice) Bill was passed in Queensland Parliament. It was a momentou...s day when this Bill was first introduced, and now it has become a reality for the Torres Strait Community. The words Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa from the languages of the Eastern and Western Islands translates to for our childrens children. Today is about recognising the many generations of Torres Strait Islander children who have been raised under this traditional cultural practice. I am proud that this Bill is the first of its kind in Australia, and only one of few international examples that legally recognises a traditional custom such as this. A special thank you to the panel of Eminent Persons, Aunty Ivy Trevallion, the Honourable Alastair Nicholson and Charles Passi for their extensive work and community consultation to ensure that so many voices were heard. Thank you to my Colleague, Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook for all of her hard work in the Queensland Parliament to ensure this was a priority for the Palaszczuk Government. Big eso to Aunty Rose and Aunty Ivy in particular - they have become my very dear friends. They have welcomed me into their homes and their hearts and shared with me so many of their stories. I feel so grateful to have worked with you all on this historic bill and share this moment together.

24.01.2022 ? NAIDOC was a busy time for the Boigu community with plenty of activities happening during the week-long celebrations. The community spent the week speaking about and sharing the importance of place, culture, and language.... Take a look at some of the wonderful pictures captured during the event

23.01.2022 Today, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported a record one-day increase of 307,930 in global COVID-19 cases - but in Queensland, we recorded 0 new cases. ...Not a single one of todays global cases came from our state. Queensland this is something you should be so proud of Together, we are doing a great job at keeping case numbers low and each other safe . We only need to look overseas to see what another reality might be. There are things we have had to sacrifice, and it hasnt been easy. But together, we are making a big difference. Thank you, Queensland.

22.01.2022 My name is Zitha Mosby and I am a proud Porumalgal and Masigalgal descendant from the Kulkalgal nation Central Torres Strait (Zenadth Kes). My mother is from Ma...sig Island and my father is a Billy from Poruma Island. I was born on Thursday Island and was mainly brought up on Poruma. After completing school at Saint Teresa Catholic College in Abergowrie, I moved back home to Poruma for a bit, then found myself back on the mainland working in Cairns and living in Brisbane for a few months. I couldnt be away from my Island home for too long and I found myself back here home again and have been on beautiful Poruma ever since. I am one of many that is blessed to wake up each and every day in the Torres Strait. In my free time I find myself out and about taking photographs of the beautiful surroundings that Koey Awgadh has blessed us with. I started taking photographs in 2016 on my phone in and soon after that bought a Canon EOS 110 in 2018 and started @saint_photography_image. Photography is a passion and is something I love to do, and see myself doing it for a long time, I look up to other photographers from the Torres Strait like @elitephotography92 and @doxys_photography. Right now, Im starting small at the moment, and will work hard until I go worldwide!

18.01.2022 123 of 250 Reconciliation Yarns #inthistogether2020 #250yarns250years #reconciliation Reconciliation Australia Reconciliation Queensland Inc My name is Tony and... I am from Mabuyag Island, I’m a proud Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) Islander from Wagadagam tribe. My tribal totem is Koedal (Crocodile), our tribal wind is the Kuki Guuba (northwest wind) and my tribal tongue is ‘Mabuyag’ which is a dialect of the Kala Lagaw Ya, the western island language. I speak my native tongue ‘Kala Lagaw Ya’ as my first language, Torres Strait Creole my second and English my third language. I was born on Thursday Island and grew up on Thursday Island, Bamaga and Mabuyag Island. I attended early schooling at Bamaga and Mabuyag Island. I did my High School on Thursday Island and later in Cairns at St Augustine’s College. After school I went back home and worked as a cray fisherman, chef training for 8 months at the Jardine Motel and worked for my ex-father in-law at R&R motors as a garage assistant for about 2 years. I then went back home to Mabuyag and became a community police officer from 1994 to 1996. I started relieving as a liaison officer (Queensland Police Service) at Thursday Island in 1996/1997, I enjoyed it, so I become fulltime and have never looked back. I also joined the Army Reserve for 15 years in 51st Battalion, The Far North Queensland Regiment, C Company (Sarpeye which is creole for Sharp Eye), a highlight was attending ‘Corroboree 2000 when John Howard didn’t say sorry however got the jets to paint it above Sydney. Other highlights are making the Queensland Police Rugby League team in 2005 and putting smiles on the kids faces at the Redlynch State College under 8’s day in 2019. I enjoy the island life of fishing, reef walks, hunting, culture, listening to the Elders telling stories, diving with my Uncle and Brothers and helping out with community tasks. I love community policing, talking and listening to clients and families, working with the Elders and youth and expressing the importance of our culture. I also enjoy playing footy at the police carnival, touch, basketball, fishing, assisting with coaching and helping out with community carnivals and spending time with Elders and family. PLO Joe Banu and I give back to the community by assisting Rosies - Friends On The Street food drive for the homeless people around Cairns, we cook once a month, we cook ‘island’ dishes for our local homeless families and friends. To get the families come up and say a big thank you and the warm smiles you get are very rewarding. We pay for most of the food ourselves, we do get some food donated to us. The following Police Officers have donated fish, Ash Carrie (Edmonton Station), Gary Hunter (Cairns City Beat), Chris Hodgman (Cairns District Office) and Chris Mosby (Cairns Water Police) as well as Dennis Fay from Salty Monkeys. My job is very rewarding, there are lots of stories added over my 20 years plus within the QPS (Queensland Police). I have received a couple of Assistant Commissioner certificates, one for assisting with a bad UIL (drunk) in a boat with two young boys where we had to go out with a Water Police and a Fisheries boat to locate him. It took a few hrs to detain him, it was rough and wet, really stormy weather with sea 2- 3mts. The other one was for assisting a search and rescue of a charter boat that capsized in croc and shark infested waters in the Torres Strait off Zuna island. We assisted with Navy Vessel Malu Baizam and a rescue chopper, we got there and saved about 12 people. But it’s not about that, wanting exposure and the credit for what we do. It’s part of the job and we do best by giving advice on local land and water, local knowledge, you can’t beat it from sitting with elders and uncles learning the tides and winds and reefs growing up, it’s just like a computer, upgrading that information from the elders and uncles to us. I’m a true believer of grassroots building, spending time with community groups and Elders, working with families. I encourage family and friends to please take the time to sit with Elders and have a yarn. We have a lot to learn about our history and culture. I tell my kids and other kids that you can make a difference in life, it’s not hard, it starts within. I love going places, saving lives, seeing and meeting family or other people and seeing the smiles on their faces, the good outcomes. The 20 plus years in the police I have seen more good than bad, it is very rewarding that I know I have made a difference in helping or giving positive advice to everyone. I love changing and helping mindsets. We are one, always will be, together we can do it. #livepositive #postpositive

16.01.2022 Today was really special. With tears of joy and laughter, I joined the Eminent Persons, the Working Group, and my parliamentary colleagues to celebrate the pass...ing of the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa Bill. For the first time in Queenslands history, Torres Strait Islander traditional child rearing practice is recognised at law. This means those families and children have the same rights as everyone else. They can enroll in school, get a birth certificate, and access Government services like everyone else. This is the result of the hard work of many. I particularly want to thank Ms Ivy Trevallion, Honourable Alastair Nicholson AO RFD QC, and Mr Charles Passi for your advocacy and the legacy you have now left for your childrens children. I also acknowledge the significant contribution of those who are no longer with us.
