11.01.2022 2020 has been a turbulent year for many Australians. As I reflect on the year that was, I am humbled at how both our Council and Community have shown great strength and resilience in such challenging times. We remain incredibly grateful that the global pandemic did not reach our islands, or the greater Torres Strait region, however we must all remain vigilant and embrace ‘the new normal’ way of life to ensure we remain healthy and keep ou...r communities free of COVID-19. Christmas is a wonderful time of year when we can all come together, as family, as friends and as a community. Each year at Christmas, we are reminded of the importance of our faith, to have hope, and of God’s love; Now faith, hope, and love remain - these three things - and the greatest of these is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13 So, please do enjoy your time with loved ones, be safe and look out for our younger and elderly community members, and collectively we will all look forward to a fantastic 2021. For those travelling by boat throughout our region during the holidays, please take care and prepare appropriately for your journey and the conditions. I’d also like to say a mina big eso to my fellow Councillors, and to our fantastic staff, for all that you do for our region and ultimately our communities - the people of Zenadth Kes. Wishing you and your loved ones, a safe and cheerful Christmas, and a happy and prosperous New Year. God Bless you all, Mayor Mosby.

05.01.2022 123 of 250 Reconciliation Yarns #inthistogether2020 #250yarns250years #reconciliation Reconciliation Australia Reconciliation Queensland Inc My name is Tony and... I am from Mabuyag Island, I’m a proud Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) Islander from Wagadagam tribe. My tribal totem is Koedal (Crocodile), our tribal wind is the Kuki Guuba (northwest wind) and my tribal tongue is ‘Mabuyag’ which is a dialect of the Kala Lagaw Ya, the western island language. I speak my native tongue ‘Kala Lagaw Ya’ as my first language, Torres Strait Creole my second and English my third language. I was born on Thursday Island and grew up on Thursday Island, Bamaga and Mabuyag Island. I attended early schooling at Bamaga and Mabuyag Island. I did my High School on Thursday Island and later in Cairns at St Augustine’s College. After school I went back home and worked as a cray fisherman, chef training for 8 months at the Jardine Motel and worked for my ex-father in-law at R&R motors as a garage assistant for about 2 years. I then went back home to Mabuyag and became a community police officer from 1994 to 1996. I started relieving as a liaison officer (Queensland Police Service) at Thursday Island in 1996/1997, I enjoyed it, so I become fulltime and have never looked back. I also joined the Army Reserve for 15 years in 51st Battalion, The Far North Queensland Regiment, C Company (Sarpeye which is creole for Sharp Eye), a highlight was attending ‘Corroboree 2000 when John Howard didn’t say sorry however got the jets to paint it above Sydney. Other highlights are making the Queensland Police Rugby League team in 2005 and putting smiles on the kids faces at the Redlynch State College under 8’s day in 2019. I enjoy the island life of fishing, reef walks, hunting, culture, listening to the Elders telling stories, diving with my Uncle and Brothers and helping out with community tasks. I love community policing, talking and listening to clients and families, working with the Elders and youth and expressing the importance of our culture. I also enjoy playing footy at the police carnival, touch, basketball, fishing, assisting with coaching and helping out with community carnivals and spending time with Elders and family. PLO Joe Banu and I give back to the community by assisting Rosies - Friends On The Street food drive for the homeless people around Cairns, we cook once a month, we cook ‘island’ dishes for our local homeless families and friends. To get the families come up and say a big thank you and the warm smiles you get are very rewarding. We pay for most of the food ourselves, we do get some food donated to us. The following Police Officers have donated fish, Ash Carrie (Edmonton Station), Gary Hunter (Cairns City Beat), Chris Hodgman (Cairns District Office) and Chris Mosby (Cairns Water Police) as well as Dennis Fay from Salty Monkeys. My job is very rewarding, there are lots of stories added over my 20 years plus within the QPS (Queensland Police). I have received a couple of Assistant Commissioner certificates, one for assisting with a bad UIL (drunk) in a boat with two young boys where we had to go out with a Water Police and a Fisheries boat to locate him. It took a few hrs to detain him, it was rough and wet, really stormy weather with sea 2- 3mts. The other one was for assisting a search and rescue of a charter boat that capsized in croc and shark infested waters in the Torres Strait off Zuna island. We assisted with Navy Vessel Malu Baizam and a rescue chopper, we got there and saved about 12 people. But it’s not about that, wanting exposure and the credit for what we do. It’s part of the job and we do best by giving advice on local land and water, local knowledge, you can’t beat it from sitting with elders and uncles learning the tides and winds and reefs growing up, it’s just like a computer, upgrading that information from the elders and uncles to us. I’m a true believer of grassroots building, spending time with community groups and Elders, working with families. I encourage family and friends to please take the time to sit with Elders and have a yarn. We have a lot to learn about our history and culture. I tell my kids and other kids that you can make a difference in life, it’s not hard, it starts within. I love going places, saving lives, seeing and meeting family or other people and seeing the smiles on their faces, the good outcomes. The 20 plus years in the police I have seen more good than bad, it is very rewarding that I know I have made a difference in helping or giving positive advice to everyone. I love changing and helping mindsets. We are one, always will be, together we can do it. #livepositive #postpositive
