25.01.2022 Let me preface this by saying, conditions like anxiety are rarely as simple as just having one singular nutrient deficiency. BUT - part of my job is understanding when anxiety is stemming from a physiological imbalance like: magnesium deficiency gut microbiome imbalance... adrenal dysfunction iron deficiency hormonal imbalances vitamin D deficiency Anxiety always has a psychological component; but without addressing both the psychological AND the physiological imbalances, it’s very tricky to get back on track. You can expect anxiety to leave when you take a stressor away, but be left with all kinds of physical imbalances that will keep your body anxious despite not mentally believing that you are stressed. Your body is still stressed. Let me know, have you found addressing nutrient deficiencies, gut issues and hormone imbalances has helped get control of anxiety? . . . . . : . #anxiety #nutrition #anxietyrelief #anxietytips #melbournenaturopath #naturalmedicine #guthealth #gutbrainconnection #gutbrainaxis #healthymind #mindset #stressrelief

24.01.2022 If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know that one of my favourite topics to discuss is the link between the gut and brain; our digestive system and our mood. Reasons being, for one, it’s fascinating, and two, I’ve experienced the gut-brain axis being thrown out of whack first hand, and I’m so passionate about teaching my clients how to restore this fundamental pillar of our health. 23.01.2022 Ladies, we need to talk about PMS. It is very common (please note I didn’t say normal) that women experience a worsening of anxiety, depression, or otherwise emotional lability in the week leading up to or of their period. But feeling crap for one week in every four weeks ...?! That’s not ok. ... What happens around this time is that hormonal changes (a sudden drop in estrogen and progesterone) can lead to resultant fluctuations in our neurotransmitter levels - eg/ serotonin, our happy brain chemical. Some people’s bodies and brains are more sensitive to these fluctuations, especially if there is already underlying anxiety or other mental health concerns. The good news? We can address your PMS mood swings naturally You actually don’t have to just put up with it . . . . . . . . . #naturalmedicine #pms #premenstrualsyndrome #naturopath #hormones #natural #hormonalhealth #naturopathicmedicine #mentalhealth #anxiety #pmdd #healthmemes #periodmemes

22.01.2022 Although my clients’ health issues are usually a lot more complex than this, it did make me laugh Oftentimes during stress the first things we let go of are the very things that our bodies need to support us during that time. Nutritious food. Movement. Sleep. Down time. ... We need them always but especially if dealing with a big life stress. Show of hands if you’ve let these slip this year? That’s ok! It’s normal as you try to navigate a stressful time. This isn’t about guilt or blame, it’s about the logical reasons why your body desperately wants you to think about getting more nutrient dense whole foods, less caffeine, less alcohol, a better sleep routine, more movement, however gentle Stress can feel all in your head and in your thoughts but in actual fact it runs rampant through your body. That’s why supporting your physical body during stressful times can help you cope better. 21.01.2022 If you are or have been caught in this cycle ... you may never know what is the chicken and what is the egg But what you should know is that the best approach is one that is holistic, and looks at both the: gut dysfunction involved in IBS, including diet, the gut microbiome, digestive function, bidirectional communication from the gut to the brain via the nervous system;... as well as: how your body reacts to stress, what emotional/ mental/ physical stressors are playing into your health, techniques to help reduce the stress response. 19.01.2022 There were many days on my gut journey that there is absolutely NO WAY I would have worn this outfit... I was so bloated so often that even though I actually had less body fat than now, I couldn’t do up this size jeans And you know what; there is no quick fix or magic pill here. If you’re too bloated to do up your jeans (NB you’ll know it’s bloating because it will come and go, as opposed to gaining fat around the mid-section) then your answer will lie in:... 18.01.2022 Good Morning World Just stopping by with a public service announcement: After 8 months of working online via Zoom for Naturopathy consultations during Melbourne lockdown, I’ve decided this is the best way for me to work with you for the foreseeable future ... I know some people have thought about waiting until they can attend in person, however overall clients have mentioned that the ease and flexibility of being able to see me from home has worked well for them Think: no travel, no looking for a car park, can wear your PJs The best part for me has being able to open myself up to the rest of Australia, rather than being limited to those locally, so if you’re interstate, you are welcome to enquire about an appointment And yes, this cheeky little monkey will still be at your sessions, often curled up in my lap Let me know if you have any questions about how I work as a Naturopath I look forward to connecting with you online . . . . . . . . . #naturopath #melbourne #naturopathaustralia #guthealth #naturalmedicine #naturopathy #naturalhealing #ibs #anxiety #wellness #gutbrainconnection #heretohelp #friyay #psa #fridayfeeling #positivevibes #nutritionistaustralia #nutritionist

18.01.2022 One of the topics I’m most passionate about is the gut-brain connection; the link between our gut and mental health Reason being, it’s not only fascinating but I’ve experienced the gut-brain axis being thrown out of whack first-hand: the non-coincidental occurrence of developing Coeliac disease and anxiety at the same time. 16.01.2022 . Over 90% of you who responded to my poll today said that you could relate to having gut issues that flare up for unknown and seemingly random reasons. It can feel random when you’re in the thick of it - but it is not. ... Here’s what a standard blood test or stool test won’t tell you: what the state of your microbiome is (good/bad bacteria) whether you have any pathogenic yeasts lurking whether you have SIBO how well your body produces stomach acid and digestive enzymes to break food down your gut motility how reactive your nervous system is to stress and therefore how that impacts your digestion All of these things can be tested and measured, but it isn’t that common in mainstream medicine to do so. So often people are told there is nothing wrong with them OR just that they have IBS and will have to live with it. s s s ss. To me, a diagnosis of IBS isn’t good enough. Why? Because it doesn’t give you any indication what the cause is and therefore what the solution is. IBS itself has a cause - it’s just different for everyone, that’s why there is no one solution for it. 14.01.2022 A couple of themes popping up with clients this week that I think are really important 1. Prioritisation of your self-care ... 2. Realisation that you don’t have to suffer in silence - there is another normal in which you feel great You know the saying, you can’t pour from an empty cup? Sometimes you want to give so much - to your family, to your job, to your friends, to your kids - that you feel deep down it would be selfish to do something for yourself HOWEVER, the complete opposite is true! Investing in yourself, in whatever way that means something to you, is exactly what can make you feel like the best version of yourself, with the physical and mental energy to give to others And in a similar vein, feeling crap is not normal! You do not have to just push through and accept what is. 12.01.2022 You can have the perfect diet. You can exercise regularly. You can even have a great sleep routine. But what is going on up in that head of yours? ... Take it from me, you can do everything right and still be unhealthy if you’re letting stress take hold of your brain and body. Of course we need to get our nutrition and movement right, this is a huge part of what I do! But learning to relax, learning to make time to relax, is something we can all benefit from. Heading into the holiday season, for some this means more down time, for others, it’s the opposite. For some it’s the joy, others grief and some both and everything in between. If you have an inkling that your stress levels are getting the better of you and your health, there are many benefits to naturopathic support. Apart from coaching around how to support yourself through lifestyle, I use herbal and nutritional medicine to assist in balancing the nervous system and calming down your stress response I am fully booked for the rest of the year but welcome new enquiries for Zoom consultations in January . . . . . . . . . #naturopahicmedicine #naturopathy #stress #mindset #belief #anxiety #perspective #healthymindset #mindbodymedicine #mindbody #wellness #healthylife #relax #rest #breathe

11.01.2022 Tell me, does your gut feel better when you’re suuuper relaxed? Do you notice less bloating, less IBS symptoms, less stomach pain? This is not a coincidence. ... The well versed gut brain connection works both ways but an important and common link is the impact of stress on our digestion. That’s all well and good to know but what can you actually do about it? Stress is something that should be addressed with a health practitioner that works in this area but here are some of my go-to stress relief tips that help me feel like me, and consequently help my gut function optimally: Sleep: not too much, and not too little - but a REGULAR sleep schedule. Try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. Breathing. If you’re stressed and it affects your gut I guarantee there are times in the day you’re holding your breath, or not exhaling completely. I teach Buteyko breathing exercises - this is my number 1 tool for beating insomnia as well. Move your body. It doesn’t have to be anything high intensity, it just has to be movement. This not only helps your mood but your lymphatic system, which is very important for a well functioning gut. Talk to someone you trust about how you feel. Chances are when your body is in fight or flight that your mind won’t be giving you the calm, grounded reasoning that you need. Sometimes it can really help just to speak how you feel to someone. Spending time in nature. If you’ve followed me for a while you know I’m low-key obsessed with the ocean and walking bare foot in the sand. All of these techniques are things you can give yourself today! As a client of mine I will often just nutritional and herbal medicine to calm down your stress response as well, which amplifies the benefits of slowing down your body and mind If you’re curious about healing your gut, feel free to comment with any questions or DM me for assistance . . . . . . . #gutbrainconnection #mindbody #guthealth #calm #relaxation #beach #stressless #anxiety #ibs #guthealing #digestivehealth #gutbrainaxis #wellness #healthspo #happyplace

11.01.2022 a health practitioner ever said to me was, "but you're an anxious person - you're always anxious". Deep down in my heart, I knew this wasn't true. Yes, I had anxious thoughts, anxious behaviours, and some pretty compelling anxious tendencies, but I truly don't believe that this is actually who anyone is. ... Anxiety can feel all-consuming, but it is not who you are. I knew that I was capable of changing my thought patterns and the very visceral anxiety living in my body - changing if I wanted to. 10.01.2022 s Inherent in many types of anxiety is this concept of worry, fear or overthinking about what happen; what might happen in the future, notably not what is happening right now. This could be anxiety about actually being anxious. Been there ... This causes us a lot of unnecessary pain, obviously An initial anxiety trigger can be something really small but then spiral if your mind latches onto it and then allows you to get way ahead of where you are in this moment, right now. This is why practices that bring us back to the present moment are so great at calming down our stress response Eg: movement, for some that might be something slow and mindful like yoga, for me something I love to do takes my mind to my happy place, and that’s high intensity cardio following a guided meditation or hypnosis; my favourite app for this is Mindset because the sessions are 20-30 minutes and I like to listen to them while walking playing some gentle music and focusing on the breath, I would add in some static stretches just to feel this into my body engaging in an activity you really enjoy: a sport, knitting, cooking, colouring etc What’s something you do to calm down an anxious mind? . . . . . . #anxiety #mindset #anxious #powerofnow #meditation #mindfulness #mindful #exercise #movementismedicine #breathe #wellness #naturalhealing #mindbody #naturopathmelbourne #fitness #exercise #healthtips #stressless

For me, exercise has always made me feel really good mentally and physically, and that's always been the biggest driver for getting it done day in and day out I touched on this the other day in my story, but there is some really interesting research out there to demonstrate that cardio exercise can improve the your body's innate production of good gut bacteria. If that's not amazing, I don't know what is It should be noted that this effect took place after around 6 weeks, and ceasing exercise showed a decline in the changes. 10.01.2022 FOOD vs SUPPLEMENTS { TL;DR - You should be able to get the majority of the nutrition you need from food alone. Supplements are useful in therapeutic doses for specific conditions under the guidance of a nutrition professional } Ever heard someone say taking supplements is an expensive waste of time? Sure, if you’re taking a poor quality supermarket shelf supplement that you don’t actually need. ... As a Naturopath, I always prefer to give my clients a diet that will sustain their nutritional needs in the long term, but short-term, nutritional supplements can be used for therapeutic benefit in specific ways. I can count on one hand the number of times I would have prescribed a multivitamin in the last 8 years in clinic. 09.01.2022 One of the most important reasons you should eat more plants ... in a nutshell (pun intended) ... PREBIOTICS. Prebiotics are not probiotics ... yet. They are fuel for your gut to make its own probiotics. Think about it, did our ancestors have probiotic capsules in fridges? Nope, their bodies made their own good bacteria - as does yours given the right circumstances. ... That’s not to say capsulated probiotics can’t be useful; they can be wonderful aids in various health issues. But our LONG TERM solution is always how we can assist our body to heal itself, to work optimally, unaided by supplements. To cut a long story short, we need adequate plant based foods, these indigestible fibres, to create a diverse and thriving gut microbiome. The only caveat here is if you have existing gut issues like SIBO that make certain plant fibres almost intolerable - you’re best to get professional support in rectifying the underlying issues driving your intolerance to these foods Reach out for any assistance. 09.01.2022 Do you use fake tan? Hey, me too. That being said I only use @ecotan because it’s all natural ... but that’s beside the point. DID YOU KNOW? ... Fake tans (all of them) inhibit your skin’s production of vitamin D by up the 90%, the same way that sunscreen or SPF foundations do. Now keep in mind vitamin D is SUPER important for regulating many body functions, of note vitamin D deficiency is linked to: fatigue poor calcium absorption (think weak bones, muscle cramps) low mood a poor immune system (and nobody has time for that right now!). No need to throw in your tanning habit, but I’d highly suggest taking breaks - your skin needs at least 15-20 minutes of direct sun 4 x week with more than just your face exposed (especially if you have makeup or sunscreen on) It’s always a good idea to get your levels checked as well as supplementation is often required to bump them up if they are low - generally sunshine won’t be enough at that point So get out there guys! But remember, if you burn it’s not only a skin cancer risk but it will destroy the vitamin D your skin lovingly produced, and you can’t make vitamin D from sun through glass Questions? 08.01.2022 : s ss? Chia seeds, in the form of chia pudding here, are an excellent source of soluble fibre - which can be very beneficial for those with a sluggish gut. BUT WAIT. Not all those with a sluggish gut should add in a huge dose of fibrous foods or a fibre supplement expecting this to sort out the problem ... 06.01.2022 Heal the gut ... so what does that actually mean? I’m as guilty as anyone of throwing around the phrase heal the gut, but you may not have the slightest idea what that actually means... if not, read on! Generally speaking, healing the gut can be broken down into:... 1) Reducing inflammation in the gut 2) Repairing any permeability (leakiness if you will) of the gut lining 3) Improving digestive function eg the stomach’s ability to produce stomach acid to break down food 4) Restoring levels of beneficial bacteria while limiting the ability of pathogenic bacteria/ yeasts / parasites to populate the gut Identifying which of these steps is paramount for you is what I do in an initial consultation, which can be done through a thorough case history and occasionally functional testing As always, that’s why one probiotic, one gut repair powder won’t be right for everyone. 05.01.2022 s s s - s While it may be a necessary step towards healing the gut, cutting out groups of nutritious foods (like the humble cabbage) long term can ultimately cause more damage to the gut microbiome. It’s key that you investigate where the intolerance started (eg gut dysbiosis, leaky gut, gut infection, SIBO) and fix it Then and only then you’ll want to try, in a structured way, to reintroduce the plant foods until tolerant It can be a long road, but it’s definitely worth it . . . . . . . . . #fodmaps #guthealth #guthealing #diet #lowfodmapdiet #ibs #irritablebowelsyndrome #gut #digestivehealth #bloating #veggies #plantbased #gutmicrobiome #prebiotics #goodgutbugs #fibrefoods #naturopath #naturalmedicine #melbournenaturopath #nutrition #healthyfood #guthealthtips

Food intolerances often stem from a deeper issue, whether that be: leaky gut SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) underactive digestive function overactive stress response (triggering both of the above) disordered gut-brain axis dysregulated immune system injury to the gut eg, gut infection, heavy use of antibiotics or anti-inflammatoires. All of these in isolation, or coupled together, make it more difficult for our body to have a normal digestive process. That’s why I never jump to food intolerance testing before investigating the root cause of your gut issues You don’t have to suffer in silence; reach out for support . . . . . . . #guthealth #gutbrainaxis #gutbrainconnection #gut #digestion #naturopath #naturalmedicine #nutrition #ibs #ibsawareness #coeliac #lowfodmap #fodmap #nutritiontips

01.01.2022 s Inherent in many types of anxiety is this concept of worry, fear or overthinking about what happen; what might happen in the future, notably not what is happening right now.

01.01.2022 ? Anxiety or stress can be the sole reason you experience gut issues. And I'm not talking debilitating anxiety; this can be run of the mill, everyday busyness that you don't even identify as "stressful".... Ever had a really busy day where you've been under pressure to meet deadlines, be "on", then eaten and gotten a sore stomach? Or finished a HIIT workout and noticed that you're really bloated (hello wasn't this supposed to give me abs)? These are some of the short-term changes to occur to your digestion when your body is in a stressed state. Extrapolate that out to long-term stress and anxiety, and well, you're looking at some longer term gut issues. Yes, this works both ways. Gut imbalances, in particular to your gut bacteria, can also trigger anxiety or other mood changes. Vicious cycle, right? So, interrupt this cycle ASAP! You don't deserve to feel anxious and in pain, when there are solutions to your problems.
