09.01.2022 First Sunday of Advent Year B (Mk 13: 33-37) Here is a quiz for you. You are sleeping. You are dreaming. A big lion is chasing you. You try to run away, and you see a tiger coming in front of you. You turn sideways, but every side you turn to, you find a ferocious animal coming after you. How can you escape? The answer is: Wake up. Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent, means coming. During this season of Advent once again we wait for the coming of the Lord. Waiting ...is a reality of life. There is waiting at table for food to be served. There is waiting for night to fall. Then, the sun to rise. There is waiting for graduation, payday, and publication of the exam results. There is waiting for healing, for pain to stop and much more. By waking up one enters a whole new world of reality, different to that of the dream world. Faith is first a way of seeing, and then a way of living. Today is the 1st Sunday of Advent year cycle B. It gives us a new start; we look back on the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem as a high point and we look to the future when Christ will come again. The season of Advent brings us the magnificent vision of life and hope for the future given to us by Christ. In the gospel today, the householder assigns his servants particular tasks before he sets off on a journey. He singles out the doorkeeper with a special warning. Be on your guard, because we do not know when the master of the house is coming. We know Jesus is constantly coming into our lives. Each of us is the doorkeeper, whom God has put in charge of our own lives as well as the lives of our community, our church, our society. Advent calls us to stand ready. Advent is the season of special preparation for and expectation of the coming of Christ. It encourages us to examine our lives, to reflect on our need for God to enter our lives, and to prepare earnestly for, and eagerly await the coming of Christ. Let us remember the saying of St. Thomas Aquinas: Without God, I can’t. Without me, He won’t. A saying goes: Actions speak louder than words. Actions are very much important. It is said that, Yesterday is a memory. Tomorrow is but a dream. Now is the only time on which eternity depends. Our future destiny depends totally on the now, on how we make use of the opportunities of the present time. As Thomas Merton said, now should be the beginning of the end in us of all that is not Christ. It would be good to reflect on a text message I received about the four blessed looks: LOOK BACK and thank God; LOOK FORWARD and trust God; LOOK AROUND and serve God; LOOK WITHIN and find God. 02.01.2022 HOMILY. Feast of Christ the King The story is told about a husband who was boasting to his friends: You know, in my house I am the king, and whenever my wife a...nd I have a quarrel, my wife does the kneeling! Upon overhearing this, the wife said: You know why I kneel down? I kneel down to look for him under our bed where he is hiding! I read this story about a little girl who was standing with her grandfather by an old-fashioned open well. They had just lowered a bucket and had drawn some water to drink. She asked her grandfather: where does God live? the old man picked up the little girl and held her over the open well. Look down into the water, he said, and tell me what you see. ‘I see myself, said the little girl. ‘That’s where God lives, said the old man, He lives in you. Today is the Feast of Christ the King. What image comes to your mind when someone mentions the word ‘King’? For us, we may think of crowns and rich robes, attendants and regal surroundings, soldiers and subjects. The Kingdom of God is a space. It exists in every home where parents and children love each other. It exists in every region and country that cares for its weak and vulnerable. It exists in every parish that reaches out to the needy. The Kingdom of God is a time. It happens whenever someone feeds a hungry person, or shelters a homeless person, or shows care to a neglected person. The Kingdom of God is a condition. Its symptoms are love, justice, and peace. Jesus Christ is king! We pray today that God may free all the world to rejoice in his peace, to glory in his justice, to live in his love. At the sunset of life, the Lord is only going to ask us one question: How much love did you put into the world? The mark of Christianity is in giving and people who cannot give do not become richer. Only eternity and eternal dreams and hopes will remain. This parable teaches us three things about that we must give to the three Ls (the Lost, the Least and the Last) of our society. Jesus promises rewards for even a cup of water given to our brethren. This is beautiful Christian ideal to have before us that Jesus is in the other person. Jesus is in the person next to me, the person behind me, in front of me, in the person I live with and work with. Jesus is the Hungry to be fed; he is the Thirsty to be satiated; Jesus is the Sick to be healed; Jesus is the Lonely to be cared for; he is the unwanted to be loved. Jesus is the Beggar to give Him a smile. It would be good to reflect on a text message I received about the four blessed looks: LOOK BACK and thank God; LOOK FORWARD and trust God; LOOK AROUND and serve God; LOOK WITHIN and find God. The Solemnity of Christ the King is not just the conclusion of the Church year. It is also a summary of our lives as Christians. Jesus Christ still lives as King, in thousands of human hearts all over the world. The cross is his throne and the Sermon on the Mount is his rule of law. His citizens need obey only one law: Love others as I have loved you". See more
