22.01.2022 Feeling nostalgic, I had some time to go though a box of old photos which I never put into an album. Here is one of my absolutely favourite aunties - zia Maria from Ripa Teatina (Chieti prov). She was a big influence in my life and I loved visiting her and helping her when I was in Abruzzo in the 80’s and 90’s.. Whether we were sitting and chatting and shelling broadbeans or making crespelle on her large frypan on the coals in her fire place she always had time for me. I am blessed to have known her and wish I had even more stories from her. A lot of us have or had a zia Maria... vero?

21.01.2022 Frances enjoyed her private tour several seasons ago. We visited the north of Abruzzo and this very special farmhouse. Rita is the most exquisite host as she showed us around... so beautiful to see they hang on to many of the old ways.

20.01.2022 Going through more of my photo boxes I was delighted to come across a series of very old romantic postcards I bought in a market in Abruzzo. I think it was at Chieti at one of their interesting ‘mercato antiquariato’. ‘Passa un ondata di malinconia’ it reads: (A wave of melancholia passes over me) Cards like these were sent in the early 1900’s to their lovers who missed each other greatly...... Today it is simply reduced to a text or an emoji ...sometimes hardly even a phone call. Triste ...no?

18.01.2022 Pasta e ceci / chickpeas memories at Filetto, Abruzzo. Our guests Susan and Robert from USA loved their time in the village as we retraced their family heritage. So many stories and so many memories...

07.01.2022 Three generations of women- nonna Vita Felice, mamma Rosa and myself/Luciana... The stories continue within us..

05.01.2022 The first artichokes/ carciofi of the season spotted at today’s Saturday markets.. it is winter here in the Southern Hemisphere so I guess we need to wait for the end of winter/ early spring to get our great artichokes. I can think of so many recipes with them- risotto with carciofi, stuffed artichokes (all time favourite dish!), pickled artichokes.... How do you like your artichokes? Perhaps in one of my upcoming cooking classes we can cook with artichokes?

03.01.2022 I really enjoy baking for my friends and family. I made this ‘crostata alla crema pasticcera’ to take to a party.. Such a good looking tart! I made the Italian custard cream just like we make for cakes and cannoli and bignè..and baked it in the crostata pastry shell.

01.01.2022 Some wonderful quiet corners and vistas from Sorrento’s art gallery. I always enjoy going to out of the way and unusual spots and find some real gems in often busy and overrun tourist towns in Italy. Memories of my 2019 research trip...
