19.01.2022 The Importance of an Electrical Safety Inspection No one hesitates to call an electrician whenever a fault is seen. However, most people will take their electrical wiring safety for granted. All electrical installations/wiring will deteriorate with age and use. However, most home owners often overlook the wiring condition. At the most, an electrical safety inspection will only be called when a breaker has already been tripped or a fuse has already been blown. It is not surpri...Continue reading

19.01.2022 CAN I DO ELECTRICAL REPAIRS MYSELF? Its not uncommon for homeowners to immediately spot an electrical issue. Any good handyman will tell you that they can fix it themselves without a problem. Unfortunately, there is a problem. Handymen are not qualified, licenced or insured to undertake electrical work. Electricity is dangerous and has the power to end life if not managed correctly. This is why electricians must undergo years of extensive theoretical and practical training a...nd certification to obtain their unrestricted electrical licence. A licence may only seem like a piece of paper, but that paper is something that ensures conformity to Australian Standards, holds up under insurance investigation and protects your family. Dont risk your life, your home insurance cover or the safety of your family. Call a licenced electrician, such as Townsville Electrician, if you require any electrical repairs undertaken at your home of workplace.

18.01.2022 HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR ELECTRICITY BILL YEAR ROUND We all want to save money on our electricity bill and we have good news for you, saving money is both easy and beneficial to you and the environment! However, energy-saving methods are different depending on the season, and it can be difficult to remember the various tips. Therefore, here is a handy guide to saving money throughout the year. SPRING... Open your windows, so you can naturally cool your home without turning on the air conditioner. Cook outside to avoid heating up your home by using the kitchen. Use your ceiling fans so that you dont have to lower your thermostat too much. SUMMER Keep your thermostat at around 24C. Get an air conditioner tune up to optimize energy efficiency. Keep the shades and blinds drawn on sun-facing windows to keep your home cool. Consider installing rooftop solar panels. Payback periods can be short as only a few years. AUTUMN Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans to be clockwise to push warm air back down. Just remember to switch the direction back to counter clockwise in the summer. Open blinds and curtains in the morning so heat can come into the house and close them in the evening to trap in heat. Clean or replace your A/C filter. This should be done once a month, but you should make sure to do this more diligently during the fall and winter as you use your homes A/C system more. WINTER Close air vents to rooms you dont use much. This will help concentrate heat where its needed most. Leave curtains open on the side of the house that gets the most sun exposure so that more natural warmth can enter the home. Keep the temperature around 21C when youre home and turn off the heating system while youre away so that youre not using the heat when you dont need to.

14.01.2022 What to Do When Your Safety Switch (aka RCD) Trips

14.01.2022 WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SAFETY SWITCH AND A CIRCUIT BREAKER? Safety Switches Safety switches are a compulsory installation in homes and offices. This device is installed in the switchboard to protect you from electrocution and fires that are caused due to electrical faults.... The safety switch checks the current passing through the live wires that are responsible for supplying current to the equipment or electrical systems. If the safety switch identifies an imbalance in the current that is passed through the wires, which may have occurred due to various reasons like faulty appliances, damaged wiring, nuisance tripping, bad weather, and/or defective switches, it cut offs the power supply almost immediately. In a nutshell, safety switches protect lives by turning the power to the circuit off. Circuit Breakers Circuit breakers are installed in the main switchboard. They protect the electrical circuits in your home and office. It cuts off the power supply once it detects high current flow or overload that may happen because of any of three reasons circuit overloads, short circuits, and ground fault surges. They can be operated manually or automatically. The circuit breaker looks similar to a safety switch, but it does not protect people from electric shocks. And thats the critical difference.

13.01.2022 IS YOUR CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPING FREQUENTLY? High wattage items like microwaves and hairdryers can trip circuit breakers, particularly when other power consuming items are used on the same source. A circuit breaker is designed to protect you and your home, so when it does trip, thats a sign its doing its job. Look at what you were using when it tripped. If it was a hair dryer, try using the low setting. Alternatively, limit the electrical usage on a single circuit while hig...h watt devices are in use. One of the biggest causes of frequent circuit breaker tripping is the overloading of power boards. Most homes and apartments, even newer ones, dont have enough power points to cater to, for example, a complete home entertainment unit setup. If circuit breakers in your home are tripping frequently, it could be down to circuit overload. Prevent this by: Never daisy-chain power boards. Remove devices that arent in use Dont overburden a single electrical circuit.

13.01.2022 WHY DO MY LIGHT BULBS BLOW OUT FREQUENTLY? There are several reasons this could be occurring. However, one particular reason that should be ruled out, for the sake of fire safety, is overheating. A light fixture with poor airflow design will result in excessive heat buildup around the bulb. Having to replace bulbs again and again is not just an inconvenience, its also a fire hazard. Have your light fixtures inspected by Townsville Electrician today if you notice that bulbs are frequently blowing out.

12.01.2022 HOW TO CHOOSE A CEILING FAN SIZE & BLADES A small fan in a large room will have to work twice as hard to cool you off, while a large fan in a small room may create an uncomfortable amount of airflow. For a small to medium-sized room up to 4m x 5m, select a fan with 122cm blades, while blades of 132cm-plus will suit a room size of up to 6m x 6m. In a large, open-plan space, you may need two or more models. Whats the difference between 3, 4 and 5 blade fans? Not much. Its mor...e about the shape of the aerofoil that truly determines the effectiveness of the fan. Non aerofoil blades tend to be longer whilst aerofoil blades can be made shorter or more compact to deliver similar performance. POSITIONING Blades need to be at least 2.1m from the floor, so if you have low or standard 2.4m ceilings youll need to look for a low-profile model that can be fitted flush to the ceiling. Most fans come with a ball canopy fixing method, which means fans can be mounted on sloping, vaulted or flat ceilings. For high or raked ceilings, an extension rod might be necessary to actually bring the fan down to an efficient height. In a small room with one fan, positioning in the centre of the ceiling is logical. However, in an expansive and open-plan room, you should consider using fans to zone spaces, such as placing one over your sitting area and one above the dining table. Fans need to be fitted securely to joists or blocking, and should be positioned away from downlights to prevent flickering so ask your electrician for positioning advice. POWER A ceiling fan demands just a fraction of the power needs of an air conditioner, and using both together can reap serious energy-saving benefits. The two work well in tandem; as the A/C reduces the room temperature, that colder air is circulated by the fan. Conversely, there are similar benefits in cold months, when reverse-function ceiling fans can be switched over to run clockwise, pushing down the available heat to warm the room better. Using a ceiling fan in an outside area can also keep flies and mosquitoes away when entertaining as they dont like moving air. A fan to be used alfresco must be suitable for outdoors. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Fan blades are typically made of metal, plastic, timber or plywood, with the choice of materials influencing the price. Some fans have built-in lights, which solves the dilemma presented by making your fan, rather than a pendant light, the centre point of the room. Typically, the light can be operated independently so the fan can remain off even when the light is on.

01.01.2022 DOES ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IN MY WORKPLACE NEED TO BE TESTED AND TAGGED? Industries such as construction, demolition and mining are required to have their appliances tested and tagged every 3 months. This is because of the harsh nature of the industry which is likely to damage equipment at a faster rate. With the exception of these industries, testing and tagging is not a legislative requirement for other workplaces. However, the employer does have a duty of care to ensure the... safety of its employees, meaning that if someone was hurt from an appliance that wasnt tested and unsafe, they could be found liable. Because of this, I strongly recommend that all electrical devices in the workplace are tested and tagged on a regular basis. The Australian Standards recommend particular test and tag frequencies based on the type of environment the appliance resides in so if you are unsure, give us a call on 0480028911 and we can provide guidance on the suggested frequency.
