03.01.2022 Tom Price basketball players in a hotspot Nationals WA Member for North West Central, Vince Catania MLA said the Government’s recent ‘cash spl...ash’ highlights they’re out of touch with northern regional community needs and the level of contribution they make to the State’s economy, while disregarding the ethos behind the Royalties for Regions program. Despite the north being the engine room of the State’s economy, keeping the State afloat, people in jobs and contributing greatly to a budget surplus during one of our most challenging economic times, funding of key infrastructure upgrades continue to be overlooked. Surely communities should be rewarded with funding that’s at least commensurate with the enormous financial contributions being made by these regions? The absence of the Royalties for Regions Program has seen basic regional infrastructure projects taken for granted in metro areas continuing to be over looked or not even in the mix in the bush. Vince said the Shire of Ashburton was a prime example, barely registering on the radar in the recent budget, despite contributing a whopping 38.1% or $15.943 billion to the Gross Regional Product in the Pilbara, double that of the City of Karratha and three times more than the Town of Port Hedland. It seems although the Government’s committed to build stronger and safer communities, towns like Tom Price, integral to the success of the WA economy have been left to melt in the sun, with facilities like the basketball courts being one of the few in the north west still without cover and essential shade. Flick Guthrie, President of the Tom Price Amateur Basketball Association said with around 150 junior and 80 senior participants, basketball is a crucial part of both the social fabric and the health and well- being of the Tom Price community. Without shade, our harsh and hot inland conditions with average summer temperatures of 38 degrees, (equating to 66 degrees on the court surface) and no sea breezes, limit court time and our ability to be able to retain and encourage participation and meet a growing demand, so we desperately need cover for the courts, she said. Vince said I understand the Shire of Ashburton has committed to this project in next year’s budget but I’m calling on the Government to help bring this capital works project forward and step up to fund and expedite the build as Royalties for Regions would have done. The communities and people of the North West Central electorate certainly haven’t been rewarded for effort and it’s time the value of funding regional facilities to help retain and attract new residents, visitors and businesses to help grow and diversify our local communities was better understood. Decision makers seem too removed and focussed on Perth and the greater metro area so the merits of a Royalties for Regions programme have again been strengthened.
