16.01.2022 Trades 20% Less Income Since COVID Australian tradespeople have reported a 20 per cent decline in income over the last month as jobs started before COVID-19 are completed. Tradie search website Serviceseeking.com.au found from a survey of almost 1000 tradespeople that 78 per cent are winning fewer jobs than they were in April.... Additionally, 63 per cent of those surveyed had dropped their quoting prices to remain competitive during the pandemic. Jeremy Levitt, co-founder of Serviceseeking.com.au, said a decrease in jobs for the industry is generally a worrying sign. "There are two sides to this data. On the one hand it is clear that the lifeblood of the Australian economy, our tradies, have seen a substantial decrease in turnover in just the last month which is a worrying sign for the Australian economy," Mr Levitt said. "However there may never be a better time to hire a tradie, with 63 per cent of tradies dropping their rates to win jobs. "This might be just the incentive home-owners need to stimulate demand for tradies in the short term." In his ministerial address yesterday, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said COVID-19 was one of the biggest obstacles the construction industry had ever faced. "In April, surveys showed that job ads halved and activity in the construction, manufacturing and the services sector had their largest ever monthly falls," Mr Frydenberg said. "Treasury estimates that with the restrictions lifted under the three separate stages, 850,000 people will be back at work. "More than half of those workers will come from three sectors, with 338,000 jobs in accommodation and food services, 76,000 jobs in arts and recreation, and 71,000 jobs in transport, postal and warehousing. "Construction with 45,000 jobs and manufacturing with 20,000 jobs will also be significant contributors."
