11.01.2022 How sweet is this

11.01.2022 It always shocks me that disability orgs ask disabled people to work for free - when they claim to be helping disabled people lead independent lives. Today Free...dom 2 Live asked me to answer a heap of personal questions for their case study. The answers to the questions would be posted on their website - which sells rehab and mobility products. What would be in it for me? I asked who I should invoice. And they came back with this - see image below. You bet I wrote back. Hello Lise Thanks for your email. It is disappointing that you have requested me to answer these questions for Freedom 2 Live and have no budget for me to do so. Please do not ask marginalised people to work for no pay especially as a disability support organisation. I see your organisation sells rehabilitation and mobility equipment to help disabled people become independent. But asking disabled people to write for free doesn’t help us be independent. It seems that my words would just be helping Freedom to Live sell its products. As an employee Freedom 2 Live, I am sure you are getting paid, and I’m sure the org pays its other staff, equipment suppliers, IT support, cleaners, caters and so on. My job is a freelance writer and speaker. I have a Masters of Communication, am experienced in writing opinion pieces for the media, I have written a book and am editing another, I deliver training, and have lived disability experience. I've also won awards for my writing. It started off as a hobby and now I'm making an income doing what I love. Like you, I need income to pay my rent and bills, buy food and medication, and to live a full and active life. I want to be able to contribute economically and socially. Therefore I charge a fee. Furthermore, as a disabled woman, I am asked to work for free too much. (And so is the wider disability community.) It's all too common that disabled people are asked to work for free - because of the exposure, opportunities, and the expectation that we can give up our time or a lack of budget to offer our expertise. I also believe that if I say yes to working for free, that sets the expectation that all disabled people will work for free and so it’s not fair on my peers. Did you know that 45 per cent of disabled people live on or below the poverty line. In 2017 Jobs Australia reported that the unemploymentrate for disabled people is getting worse. Disabled people need to be paid - especially for work that relates to our lived experience. I wrote this piece for the ABC a few years ago, on why disabled people shouldn’t work for free. It still stands. http://www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2014/06/10/4022534.htm Asking disabled people to work for free is contributing to the systemic discrimination and employment barriers that we face - the very barriers that Freedom 2 Live aim to remove. Please consider budgeting for such requests in future. Best regards Carly Image: A screen shot of the email from Freedom2Live Hi Carly We don't have a budget for this. If you would like to charge us we won't go ahead! Thanks for your time. Best regards Lise Lise Associate Editor Freedom2Live The Intermedia Group ABN 94 002 583 682

09.01.2022 If the job of a Care Assistant was easy, there wouldn't be a shortage of them. But there is. If the job of a Care Assistant was just cleaning residents up, they wouldn't know their favorite foods, or when they prefer coffee over tea, but they do. If the job of a Care Assistant was insignificant, Supervisor's and Charge nurses wouldn't rely on them to identify changes out of their "normal, but they do. If the job of a Care Assistant was to just get vitals, they would have tim...e to sit down and talk with each resident for a good thirty minutes each shift, but they don't. If the job of a Care Assistant was to just show up and dress them, perform their assigned duties, then go home, they wouldn't leave work in tears knowing one of our residents isn't going to make it, but they do. If the job of a Care Assistant was appreciated by their peers and colleagues, they wouldn't feel as UNVALIDATED, but it's not. If you're proud of all Care Assistant's copy and paste this as your status! #careassistantssrock #ThankaCareAssistant #caregiversrock See more

08.01.2022 Thankyou Concise Equestrian Centre, Mackay for holding a high tea fundraiser today... Bec and Tiarlee also had a lovely tour of the centre with a view to Reef joining their programs to work on his core strength through their equine programs.

08.01.2022 If you have no other means of getting food or essential items, make a free phone call to the Community Recovery Hotline and arrangements will be made for non-co...ntact delivery of food and medication for those in quarantine and no other means of support. This will link seniors and other vulnerable Queenslanders to essential services and support. Queenslanders wanting to volunteer for the Care Army should also contact the hotline or visit https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/carearmy. The Community Recovery Hotline can be contacted on 1800 173 349.
