11.01.2022 URGENT CALL FOR ADOPTERS! We have approximately 100 Hyline Brown hens arriving at our foster station in Northern Sydney on Sunday, and they desperately need for...ever homes. We do not have capacity to house this many hens on top of what we already have at this station so they need to be adopted TODAY & collected when they arrive on Sunday. The hens are 18 months old & still laying at around 90%. Can you give these hens a second chance to live a happy life? Please send Til The Cows Come Home a private message to express interest in adopting and to be added to our waitlist today. All of our hens are rehomed as loving companions only, not for meat or breeding. See more

05.01.2022 How's this for summing up the Australian spirit? Greg left his broken mower outside his house for rubbish collection, but a stranger returned it to him fully ...repaired instead. "Had a knock at the door this morning and opened it to find a man I'd never met before, standing next to a lawn mower I'd left on nature reserve to get picked up," Greg said. The man told Greg, "No need to throw it out, I've fixed it for you." : Greg McElherron via ABC Melbourne

05.01.2022 You may have heard that the Free Shop and Free Pantry in Awaba Park near the Hamilton train station are under threat. If you're looking for ways to show up for... your neighbours and community, here's a few things you can do: 1. Talk to your neighbours, friends, family and colleagues about the Free Shop and the help it provides to our neighbours in need. 2. Sign the petition : (https://bit.ly/savethefreeshop) to show your support. Share it to gain more support. This will help show the powers that be that caring for our neighbours is non-negotiable. 3. Stock the Free Shop and Free Pantry: its cold out there! Our friends and neighbours need warm things to survive: blankets, sleeping bags, socks, mittens, beanies, warm clothing are all needed every day. As are food items like cans and other packets of food that can be eaten without access to power or heating. 4. Come along to the community picnic (http://facebook.com/events/343671153943448) on June 30 at 4pm. Bring a blanket and some food to share, and items for the Free Shop. Bring someone along with you! The police or council workers may arrive to remove the Free Shop, we will be there to show them that our community cares, but most importantly, we'll be there to show our neighbours and friends that we won't abandon them, and that we don't need a permit to care for each other. 5. Get involved with Food Not Bombs. There is always a need for people with time and resources to share to be involved in sharing meals and other things with our neighbours and friends. We need people with access to reliable transport to pick up food and transport meals to and from the cook up location to the park, we need people to share food with our neighbours, we need people to do the cooking and cleaning as well. We also have lots of other 'behind the scenes' things which need input and ideas, as well as a bit of time and energy. Please complete our intake survey which helps us work out who is able to help with what. (https://airtable.com/shr32IG0TVibJ1f37) 6. Start your own Free Shop and Free Pantry in your neighbourhood. If you're not sure how, talk to us! Our neighbours need for our care is only going to increase, and more Free Shops and other initiatives like it are one way we can do this. Remember: we don't need a permit, license or insurance to care for one another!

05.01.2022 THIS. This is who we're fighting for this #WorldEnvironmentDay and every other day. Koalas like this poor soul, who found his way onto a building site, clearly ...looking for food and habitat. Instead, he found a bulldozed worksite of cement and barren wooden beams. It’s so obvious: #KoalasNeedTrees and they keep having nowhere to go. Yet the NSW Government keeps failing koalas over and over again with their secretive deals and watered-down codes and legislation. That’s why we’re taking to the streets today at Sydney’s Koala Day of Action. Meet us at 11am at the Archibald Fountain, Hyde Park, where I will be speaking from 11:45am. More info: https://fb.me/e/1q4FdhVG0 Please join us - we need to get as many people there as possible. FYI: These photos were taken by a builder in the Hunter Region, where nearly half of eucalyptus forests have been cleared and, just last October, federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley approved 52 hectares of koala habitat clearing to expand the controversial Brandy Hill quarry south-west of Newcastle. It’s this greedy, thoughtless destruction that will see koalas extinct in NSW by 2050 - which is what our parliamentary inquiry into koalas found last year. As Deputy Chair of the koala inquiry, I was committed to ensuring strong inquiry findings and recommendations. Today, I’m just as committed to get the NSW Government to listen to those recommendations. That’s why we’re taking a stand today. Can’t make it to the protest? You can still help by: 1. Signing the petition: https://nsw.animaljusticeparty.org/campai/koala-protection/ 2. Creating a storm on social media: use the hashtag #KoalasNeedTrees and tag your local MP, plus Premier Gladys Berejiklian, NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean MP, and NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes.

03.01.2022 WE ARE DEVASTATED. THIS is how much MCC and Developers care about our precious habitats and ecosystems! They have completely drained a vital wildlife waterhol...e and delicate ecosystem that was thriving with life at Thornton (such as frogs, tadpoles, wood ducks and ducklings, dragonflies, insects etc - along with numerous native birds, marsupials, macropods and even a threatened species on site: the brush tailed phascogale) at the end of Hillgate Drive - during the Brentwood Estate Expansion - by Sydney based developer Yeramba Estates, which is outside of their permitted boundaries. They have also logged additional habitat right up to and beyond the crucial wildlife waterhole. According to the Development Application's Environmental Impact Statement and Planning Proposal this area was zoned as an E3 which is a high rated Environmental Protection and Management area due to it's special ecology. But they have failed us yet again. We are taking this matter further and I have reported this to Maitland City Council, the Local Member of Parliament, NPWS, the EPA and Natural Resources Access Regulator. We deserve answers! And the developer should be held accountable for any wrongdoings and not only fined, but made to rehabilitate the wetlands and surrounding E3 zoned habitat back to it's former glory at their own cost. This is such a heartbreaking loss NB: The photos are opposite facing as I couldn't access the other side where the original photo was taken. We urged you to also speak out against this atrocity by contacting: * Maitland City Council [email protected] (02) 49349700 * Environmental Protection Agency (EPA Investigation and Enforcement) [email protected] 131555 * National Resources Access Regulator (Waterways Investigation and Enforcement) [email protected] 1800 633 362 * National Parks and Wildlife (report the wildlife concerns - i.e. taking both a vital water source and further habitat away from a threatened species) [email protected] 1300 361 967 * Jenny Atchison MP [email protected] (02) 4933 1617 And any Councillors you think will actually care! Click on the photos for their direct contact information via the link below: https://www.maitland.nsw.gov.au/m/about-council/councillors The current Council needs to seriously step up and start showing some interest in protecting our vital green corridors and local biodiversity. Because once it's gone, it's gone forever. Let's hold them accountable together. The more pressure and requests for answers recieved, the more seriously it will be taken and the quicker it will acted upon. The level of public interest will also be considered as a factor in the investigations, reports and outcomes. We can't just let them get away with this. So if this destruction upsets you too, take action now!! Speak up before the continued damage becomes completely irreversible and we still have a chance to right this wrong. Together we are many, together we are strong! Demand the maximum penalty be enforced for both justice and as a future deterrent. Thank you for caring about this very important issue #Restore_This_Vital_Habitat!
