25.01.2022 Never easier than at the toy library. No colour codes, no gendered marketing. Just play...
25.01.2022 Do you know of any other free/cheap activities for mums and preschoolers?
25.01.2022 Being a member of a toy library means that you are sharing toys instead of buying them and saving lots of money. It's a great way to test a toy that you are con...sidering buying as a gift, and you will also save lots of space as you can borrow larger activity toys and then return them in a few weeks when your child feels like playing with something different! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBd0tzZdeqc&feature=youtu.be
25.01.2022 Good read: "Between overscheduling extracurriculars, parenting styles bordering on obsession, and our kids being locked into one kind of technology or another nearly all day long, genuine self-discovery doesnt seem to have a chance."

24.01.2022 Save the Date | 5-6 May 2018 | Kensington Town Hall The 2018 Toy Libraries Australia Annual Training Day It's actually a weekend and is set to be bigger than e...ver. Kensington is just 20 minutes from Melbourne airport and 5km from the centre of town. It's a unique opportunity to network and share information with toy libraries from around Australia, and to hear presentations on relevant issues. Current serving committee members and coordinators should try to attend, so make sure you include these details at your next committee meeting, and we'll bring you more details as we get closer to the event. https://www.toylibraries.org.au/events

23.01.2022 Some kids are over their new toys within days of us buying them. Toy libraries are here to save our wallets, and our planet and houses from mountains of toys!
23.01.2022 "Research has found that the availability of play materials (like toys and games) is one of the most consistent predictors of intelligence." And simple, inexpensive, open-ended toys are best...
22.01.2022 This is interesting. Do you, or did you, sing to your little ones? Singing songs is important for their emotional and language development, and their connection with you. (Dont worry about your off key tunes either, babies love the voices of their carers!)

22.01.2022 New toy alert! Weve just added a mini wheelie bin to our catalogue. Its lots of fun to fill with bits and pieces and push around and is available for borrowing right now.
22.01.2022 In our latest video we talk to some kids and ask them what they love about visiting the toy library. Toy libraries vary in shape and size but many have the spac...e for you to stay and play, which is a great way to have some family time. Children love being able to choose their own playthings :) in a world where adults make a lot of other decisions for them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5EDG29Ate4&feature=youtu.be See more
22.01.2022 An excellent list from Backwoods Mama. Foster awareness of their surroundings and of how to use their bodies in your little explorers, then help them problem solve using these types of phrases :D
22.01.2022 This NZ based 'love letter' explains the benefits of toy libraries wonderfully. Obviously prices and conditions of membership vary from library to library, but... the essence remains true for all. 21.01.2022 If anyone has Wiggles fans and feels like a trip to Rod Laver Arena on Dec 2nd !
19.01.2022 This is how we prepare for future reading and writing at my play school. That's right: this is pre-writing and reading. Nope. There's not a pencil nor pape...r, nor a letter in site. Yet THIS will help these children read and write. REMEMBER: getting ready to read and write does NOT need to, nor should it, involve sitting still, OR letters OR paper and pencil. There are so many other important things that need to happen, and happen a LOT, before a child can successfully do those things in which society has decided is so vitally important for a young child to do (read and write). *Eyes need to track. *Fingers need to confidently coordinate with hands, forearms, biceps, upper back, chest and core muscles. *Hands need to communicate with eyes. *Children need to struggle to achieve tasks they are motivated to do, thus developing PERSEVERANCE. *Children need time to make lots of mistakes and know they are all okay. (And that is just the short list... this post isn't going to get into the fact that a child needs a purpose in order to be motivated to read and write.) If you are taking a hold of hands and forcing them to form letters, PLEASE STOP. Are you doing this for the child? OR.... are you forcing their little hand to form letters to please the parents? What that child needs is MORE PLAY, and the adults in their life to be PATIENT. They need MORE blowing feathers and catching them, MORE smacking balloons with tubes, MORE catapulting shower puffs, MORE pendulum play, MORE climbing up slides, MORE pulling heavy stuff, MORE controlling themselves, MORE balancing, MORE crawling, MORE MORE MORE of the stuff they are motivated to do! When a child is truly ready for writing, and they have a purpose to write, it will be a simple process, not months and months of painful practicing. Writing does not need to be a struggle. Reading does not need to be a struggle. If we would just be patient, trust children to develop what needs to be developed, in the correct order...one thing WILL lead to another quite naturally. Blow more feathers. Swing more pendulums. Climb more slides. Crawl through more tunnels and tubes. Make more mistakes. Struggle more, give up less. Give children what they truly need to build a foundation so sturdy that reading and writing will be JOYFUL.
18.01.2022 Next Tuesday 15th August is the Annual General Meeting! Please come along to help us run the TCTL, choose new toys to buy and keep this amazing facility open!
17.01.2022 Regardless of how advanced of a reader they were or how much money their parents made, those who demonstrated social competence were more likely to graduate fro...m high school, go to college, get a job, and stay out of jail than those who showed a lower level of social competence. The "soft" social skills they gain in early childhoodthrough the slow, simple processes of playing and interacting, engaging with their families, and paying attention to the world around themwill serve them much better and for much longer than early academic skills.. https://www.mother.ly//your-childs-social-skills-in-kinder
17.01.2022 Well, we knew it anecdotally, but its now been backed up with research!
17.01.2022 Thankyou to the Work for the Dole workers for their great work!
17.01.2022 "With fewer toys, participants had fewer incidences of toy play, longer durations of toy play, and played with toys in a greater variety of ways. This suggests ...that when provided with fewer toys in the environment, toddlers engage in longer periods of play with a single toy, allowing better focus to explore and play more creatively." Toy Libraries offer a fantastic solution - fewer toys at home at once so children can explore and play at length, but rotating toys by borrowing also means a variety of play options on offer throughout the year that follow a child's interests and development. https://www.toylibraries.org.au/find-a-toy-library https://www.treehugger.com//kids-play-better-when-they-hav

17.01.2022 This is fascinating reading and worth your time as a toy librarian. Understanding schema basics can help parents (and you) select toys at your toy library to support and explore their child's play! https://boohoobox.co.nz//schemas-and-how-identifying-them-

12.01.2022 This is a fascinating study of a small group of babies and adults around brain function and play. Essentially, maintaining eye contact during play enabled baby ...and adult brains to sync up. We were also surprised to find that the infant brain was often leading the adult brain by a few seconds, suggesting that babies do not just passively receive input but may guide adults toward the next thing theyre going to focus on: which toy to pick up, which words to say ... https://www.princeton.edu//baby-and-adult-brains-sync-duri

10.01.2022 Sometimes it's hard, especially when we are in a hurry, but this is a good reminder to take a step back, and to let them learn and take pride in their skills.
10.01.2022 Being safe at home as a family at this time is challenging enough, so dont panic about the academics... let your children play as much as possible. And when yo...u can, play along with them - its good for everyone. "This is a time of great uncertainty... their lives have been turned upside down just as much as ours. Play is an important part of emotional development. Its associated with emotional resilience, high self-confidence, and reduced anxiety, and has been shown to relieve emotional distress around trauma."
10.01.2022 "Unless we start thinking creatively about how to make play a greater part of childhood, we risk seeing each new generation of children growing up glued to scre...ens and less physically active." This may be a UK based article, but its just as relevant here. They suggest local councils and policy makers need to do more to promote play. What would you like to see more of?

09.01.2022 Our founder Susan Linn has some great insight into the trend of mystery toys inspired by "unboxing" videos on YouTube. The problem with these dolls is the whole point of them is the acquisition, she said. Its the notion that the things we buy will make us happy.

04.01.2022 COVID -19 UPDATE FOR MEMBERS. The toy library will not be open for Saturday borrowing until further notice Self borrowing will still be available with the key available at the book library and at the front desk of the Kath Techenne Centre during the week. Ideally only one family member should come to the library but if you have to bring your children please do not allow them to play with any toys while you are in the library. Please make sure that any toys you borrow are cl...eaned BEFORE your child uses them and again BEFORE you return them It is most important that we follow great hygiene practises to keep everyone healthy. If your family needs to self isolate, either Anne Possart or Jane Ang can pick up toys to return and borrow some more for your child. If you have paid the roster exemption levy and do not know how to operate the system, Anne or I will be happy to teach you. Thank you for your cooperation, and remember, clean, clean .clean Regards Jane Ang (president) and Committee Traralgon Community Toy Library
