08.01.2022 A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido this morning at around 0300 local time. It was centred inland and quite deep so no tsunami warning was issued however it has caused significant damage. See the map below. There are reports of landslides, power outages and building collapses which have left a number of people injured and/or trapped. There are no confirmed fatalities yet however authorities say deaths are likely. The island’s main air...port in Sapporo (Chitose - CTS) reports that a number of flights are cancelled or delayed this morning. It appears though that the airport is not seriously damaged and flights are expected to resume. http://www.new-chitose-airport.jp/en/ A number of aftershocks have been felt and people in the region are advised to take care and avoid any damaged buildings and fallen powerlines.
