24.01.2022 Cino, Dusty, Nala, and Ollie graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. They're a diverse group of puppies in both appearance and personality! It's been a lot of fun working to help the shy pups feel safe and confident and the bold pups learn to settle and focus on their parents. We have a couple of spots available for Puppy Preschool in late October. If you're bringing home a new puppy, get in touch now to avoid missing out! #italiangreyhound #cattledog #staffycross #cavoodle #cutepuppies #seeingred #settle #playtime #groupclass #socialisation #rewardbasedtraining #positivereinforcement #townsvillepuppytraining
24.01.2022 Isn't Frankie just beautiful?! Belinda is working with Frankie and her family to improve her recall and to help Frankie settle when people are swimming in the pool (instead of screaming at the fence or scrambling on everyone in the pool). We are making progress with both goals and Frankie seems pretty pleased with herself! #cockerspaniel #recall #longlead #smile #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree #townsvilledogtraining

22.01.2022 Belinda caught up with Louis for a follow up session yesterday. We met him last week to work on recall training. His family have been doing their homework and Louis was quick to come when called throughout our session at the park yesterday. 22.01.2022 Featuring Zazu!
18.01.2022 Belinda enjoyed visiting Nala and Koda at home this morning. Nala is currently attending Puppy Preschool. Koda is her big brother who has shown some behaviour changes since Nala's arrival, particularly when his younger family members come to visit. We looked at some strategies to ensure Koda remains his usual happy and sociable self. #cavoodles #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree #townsvilledogtraining
18.01.2022 Look at these lovely puppies who graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. Doza, Harper, Nos, and Walter have been working very hard to learn how to settle around their friends and focus on their parents. They have been an especially exuberant bunch of pups! We are fully booked for Puppy Preschool for the rest of 2020 and are already taking bookings for early 2021. If you're bringing a new pup home over Xmas/New Year, contact us early to avoid missing out on a spot! #graduation #puppytraining #cleverpuppies #jackrussellcross #germanshepherdcross #beagle #goldenretriever #socialisation #play #settle #townsvillepuppytraining
18.01.2022 We hope you've had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your family and friends! Belinda is back in the office today and has spent the last few hours getting back to everyone who messaged and phoned over the break. If you contacted us via Facebook, the website, or email and haven't heard back, touch base again to follow up. Check your junk folder if you're waiting on an email. We'll be back seeing in-home training clients and running Puppy Preschool classes from tomorrow.... If we can help you with either, send us a message! #newyear #backtowork #adminday #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree #positivereinforcement #townsvilledogtraining
16.01.2022 Lucy is a 10 week old Labrador that Belinda visited to work on toilet training, puppy biting, and strategies to help Lucy settle for naps. Lucy crashed after 45 mins playing and learning. Isn't she too cute?! #labradorable #cutepuppy #chocolate #puppybiting #chewing #playtime #townsvillepuppytraining
15.01.2022 Belinda met lovely Pepper last week to help her Mum with some strategies to manage Pepper's lunging/barking at other dogs on walks. We started to teach Pepper that other dogs nearby predict good things happening, while also helping her to get extra space when she needs it. #labradorcross #smile #reactivedogs #counterconditioning #desensitisation #rewardbasedtraining #positivereinforcement #forcefree #townsvilledogtraining
15.01.2022 Check out Diesel, Kaiser, and Lenny settling down on their mats after some off-lead playtime. As much fun as it is to watch puppies having a fun time playing, it's also important that they learn how to switch off once the game is over. There was a little fidgeting, but a great effort from a very happy group of pups. Well done team! #cleverpuppies #settle #mattraining #aussieshepherd #germanshepherd #standardpoodle #puppyclass #puppypreschool #townsvillepuppytraining
15.01.2022 Play is a reciprocal interaction that should be fun for all involved! This is true whether the interaction is between family dogs, a play date with a friend, a greeting with a stranger, or amongst puppies in a group class. "It's okay, he's just being friendly!" This is a phrase called out all too often, usually by a well-meaning dog owner who isn't able to call their dog away from a social interaction. Sometimes it is true - their dog's body language is indeed friendly. The...ir dog's tail is wagging, their body is loose and wriggly, and they approach with a floppy grin and bouncy paws. But, play is reciprocal. If your dog tries to move away, hide, or otherwise indicates that they aren't interested in this interaction, your job is to advocate for your dog and help maintain their personal space. This is doubly true if your dog is on-lead or otherwise restrained. Many dogs, when unable to move away or preserve their personal space through polite requests (e.g. turning away, retreating, averting their gaze), will "raise their voice" to be heard. This might include growling, snapping, or biting. An unwilling participant doesn't need to "get used to it" or stop being rude because the other dog is "just being friendly". We don't like every person we meet, and your dog won't like every dog they meet. Additionally, we don't want to interact or "play" with our friends all the time - we could be busy, tired, sick, etc. Same for your dog! If you are particularly invested in your dog having opportunities to interact socially with other dogs, give them time and space to make friends. Pick play mates that match your dog's temperament and play style. Many dogs do not consider being crash tackled at the dog park a good first impression, even if the "crash tackler" was just trying to play! If you are attending group puppy classes, dog parks, dog beaches, or doggy daycare settings, make sure that your dog can get the space they need to feel safe and comfortable. If you observe other dogs being too rough with unwilling playmates or dogs unsuccessfully trying to increase their space from others, perhaps this is not an ideal place to spend time with your dog. Advocate for your dog's right to feel safe and comfortable. We don't put up with rude or pushy behaviour from our peers, and your dog shouldn't be subjected to that from theirs either. #soapbox #dogplay #puppyplay #socialopportunities #offlead #friends #advocateforyourdog #dogpark #groupplay #puppyclass
14.01.2022 Leroux, Ludo, Rollie, and Sadie graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. Could these four be any cuter? They've been a sensible little group, learning new skills and playing very politely with one another! #cavoodle #chihuahua #cockerspaniel #goldenretriever #cutepuppies #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #basictraining #socialisation #townsvillepuppytraining
14.01.2022 Mondays can be tough, so here is a cute puppy to get your week started! Belinda met Buster and his family for some basic puppy training a couple of weeks ago. He was full of beans and appreciated regular breaks for play, cuddles, and pees! #frenchbulldog #cutepuppy #basictraining #earlylearning #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #townsvillepuppytraining
14.01.2022 Belinda is seeing the year out with a steady stream of wonderful puppies! Look at the lovely pups that make up her last 5 consults for 2020. Bruiser, Arnold, Puglsy, Barky, and Alfie are all learning the skills they need to be excellent family members in their new homes. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it! #puppies #aussiebulldog #neomastiffcross #frenchbulldog #aussiecattledog #labradoodle #basictraining #inhometraining #townsvillepuppytraining
13.01.2022 This is what a walk with Wilbur typically looks like. With Garmin's new speed overlay, you can see that we move at a reasonable pace with brief periods of slower walking (or even stopping) while Wilbur investigates interesting smells or leaves some "pee mail". When i walk Wilbur, i am mindful of this being the only time he gets to spend away from home each day. We walk for physical exercise, mental enrichment, and just for fun! ... On average, if we are out for 45-60 minutes, we are stopped for 5-10 minutes total (spread out in little sniffs throughout the walk). This information is shown in the Garmin app too. It's a very small amount of time taken out of the walk and the benefits to Wilbur are great - it is fun, relaxing, and an opportunity to use his strongest sense (smell). When i walk or run for my own fitness, i leave Wilbur at home and take him for a "cool down walk" afterwards. I would be frustrated by his pace if he joined me, and he would be frustrated at not being able to stop for sniffs. Make time on your walks to let your dog sniff - they will be grateful for it! #letthemsniff #sniffari #adogsnose #peemail #walkthedog #exercise #enrichment
12.01.2022 Warning! Dog's being naughty.... What would your pooch be searching?
12.01.2022 Macie, Nyla, Percy, and Willow all graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. They've been learning some basic training skills and making new friends (human and puppy). If you have a new puppy coming home soon, get in touch about our October class dates. The age limit for our Puppy Preschool classes is 8-14 weeks old. #bordercollie #goldenretriever #poodlecross #cutepuppies #basictraining #socialisation #earlylearning #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #puppyclasses #townsvillepuppytraining
10.01.2022 Belinda was working with 6-year-old Lulu and her family to help reduce Lulu's anxiety around food. She has shown aggressive behaviour (biting) towards dogs and people around food for several years. Our first step was teaching her that she didn't need to worry about protecting her food - she would be left in peace to finish meals and snacks. Next we taught her that a person approaching predicted the addition of more food, not a threat. We are also working to teach her to drop... something she's holding, again using high-value treats. There is more work to do here, but Lulu is showing greater comfort around food in a short space of time. We should always work to help our dogs feel safe in training! #maltesecross #resourceguarding #foodaggression #bite #management #counterconditioning #positivereinforcement #forcefree #townsvilledogtraining
10.01.2022 Belinda just finished giving her annual guest lecture on Parrot Behaviour and Training to the third year vet students at JCU. It's great fun sharing the basics of behaviour and training with some of our future veterinarians. This year the lecture was via Zoom, due to COVID-19 changes, but the participation and questions were excellent! #teaching #lecture #webinar #parrots #birdnerd #positivereinforcement #problembehaviour #townsvilleparrottraining
10.01.2022 Bruno is a young Labrador we are doing some basic training with. He also tucks his front paws in when he lies down, which is too cute! #labradorable #chocolate #basics #rewardbasedtraining #positivereinforcement #forcefree #townsvilledogtraining
08.01.2022 Finch, Hamish, Nala, and Rocco all graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. One of the great pleasures of teaching Puppy Preschool is seeing each puppy learn the skills they most need - to feel safe in a new environment, to look to their humans for guidance, and to interact appropriately with their new friends. Well done everyone! Thanks for letting us be part of your journey with your pups!... #graduation #cutepuppies #groodle #bordercollie #cavoodle #maltesecross #socialisation #playtime #basictraining #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #townsvillepuppytraining
08.01.2022 Artie, Coco, Honey, and Kenzie all graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. They've been having a great time making friends and learning basic training skills. 07.01.2022 Mia is a 4yo Mixed Breed who can be grumpy when other dogs come into her personal space. By encouraging those other dogs to move away earlier, Mia can learn that she doesn't need to "yell" to be heard - her subtle requests for space are enough! #mixedbreed #dogbehaviour #socialbehaviour #personalspace #redirect #management #townsvilledogtraining
07.01.2022 Finishing the week with a puppy consult is ALWAYS a good thing! Belinda met Spectre for some basic puppy training and tips for ensuring he feels safe and happy in the big wide world (i.e. socialisation). He was eager to learn and play during our first session yesterday! #germanshepherd #fluffypuppy #puppyteeth #basictraining #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree #townsvillepuppytraining
07.01.2022 Bonnie is a 2-year-old Staffy and Leila is a 2-year-old Sharpei. Bonnie has been becoming increasingly anxious and aggressive around food, leading to more generalised discomfort between the two dogs. Leila was opting to avoid spending time close to Bonnie at certain times of the day, meaning she missed out on time with the family.... Last week we made some small changes to reduce the perceived scarcity of food for the dogs (switching to two meals a day instead of one) as well as giving each dog the space to enjoy their meal in peace (separate rooms with a closed door between them). This small change made a big impact on both dogs behaviour! They are eating happily and spending more time together with the family. There have been no aggressive incidents between them this week! Feeding separately is a simple change that anyone can make in a multidog household. Each pet should be able to eat in peace, without looking over their shoulder or getting in trouble. #staffy #sharpei #foodaggression #resourceguarding #managementstrategies #setthestageforsuccess #mealtimes #townsvilledogtraining
06.01.2022 Diesel, Gavin, Kaiser, and Lenny graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. 06.01.2022 We often recommend toilet rolls as fun shredding/foraging toys for dogs. Wilbur enjoyed an afternoon snack of dry biscuits (approx. 1/4 cup) twisted and folded into a wrapping paper roll we'd finished with. It kept him busy for a few minutes and combined two of his favourite activities (eating and shredding). Foraging strategies like this provide great outlets for normal doggy behaviours (like chewing, ripping, shredding). If you think your dog might ingest the cardboard, supervise them or skip this idea! #foraging #ditchthebowl #enrichment #shredding #cardboard #dogfood #snackattack #wrappingpaper #happydog #scruffymutt
04.01.2022 Bundy, Luca, Luna, and Stitch all graduated Puppy Preschool at Western Suburbs Vet Clinic this evening. 04.01.2022 We are fully booked for group puppy classes for the rest of 2020, even after squeezing in a couple of short courses before Xmas to try to make space for all the puppy enquiries we've been receiving. Belinda can squeeze in a few in-home Puppy Packages before Xmas, which can be a great way to get started on some basic training and to learn to manage common puppy problems like jumping, chewing, and biting. Nala (pictured) had great fun learning that hands are for pats and toys a...re for biting during our in-home sessions. If you are welcoming a new puppy into your home over the holidays and would like to join a group class in the New Year, contact us asap! The first Januray intake is almost fully booked already. The age limit for our program is 14 weeks, so you have to book early to avoid missing out. #puppies #basictraining #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #forcefree #socialisation #puppybiting #chewing #puppypreschool #townsvillepuppytraining
02.01.2022 Another week is done and Belinda has wrapped up consultations with Hamish the Border Collie. She first visited a month ago to help with pre-puppy planning. Hamish has been home for a week now and is settling in well and learning the ropes of living in his new home. He is a sweet little pup! #bordercollie #cutepuppy #smile #puppytraining #puppyproofing #management #toilettraining #play #chewtoys #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #townsvillepuppytraining
02.01.2022 Belinda was back with training clients yesterday. Charli is a young cattledog cross who relentlessly seeks opportunities to play fetch, which prevents him from resting and engaging in other social and enrichment activities. We are working on some strategies to give Charli clear cues for when fetch is available and teaching him to enjoy other activities as well! #cattledogcross #workingdog #fetch #obsession #enrichment #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #townsvilledogtraining
02.01.2022 This week Belinda visited Billy (Labrador) and Pepper (Beagle X Cav) with their separate families. Both are around 6 months old and needed help with polite greetings and loose lead walking. These happy young pups aren't trying to be naughty or stubborn by jumping and pulling on the lead, they're just doing what comes naturally. By teaching them that good things happen when their paws are on the floor or when those leads are loose, we can help them learn the skills that will... make life in a human-centric world easier. #labradorable #beaglier #adolescentdogs #youngdogs #puppies #basictraining #jumpingup #looseleadwalking #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #townsvillepuppytraining
01.01.2022 Belinda will be on leave from today, Friday 18th December, until Monday 11th January. All enquiries received via Facebook or the website/email over the holidays will be responded to by Tuesday 12th January. In keeping with tradition, we wanted to see the year out with a collage of the beautiful puppies who have attended Puppy Preschool with us this year. While 2020 may have been a year unlike any other, we've still seen over 100 puppies through our classes and many more for ...in-home training too. Happy training and happy holidays! PS: In case you're wondering, Border Collies (13) were the most populous puppies this year, followed by Mini Dachshunds (10). #puppies #cutepuppies #happypuppies #graduates #positivereinforcement #rewardbasedtraining #holidays #onleave #townsvillepuppytraining
