21.01.2022 Sometime ago Escape Trekking Adventures (ETA) made the decision to start a project to erect a memorial for Ovuru Idiki, a Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel, that passed away in 2013, ETA invited T4EK to be part of the project. In 2008, I had the honour and pleasure of meeting with this man, one of last Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, I shook his hand and thanked him for his brave and caring work for our diggers, which his nephew translated to him. I remember he liked my tattoos, and studied them for a ...few minutes while I sat next to him. T4EK raises donations to help schools along the track, however it was the Australian Diggers, the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels that first drew us to the Kokoda Track and gave us the inspiration to help where we could therefore we founded T4EK, consequently Julie and I made the decision to assist this project and pay enduring respect and gratitude for Ovuru and all of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. Thanks to the determination of Escape Trekking Adventures and their trekking team 7 members and T4EK, the project came to fruition last year. We want to thank Shane and Tina Goodwin from Escape Trekking Adventures for their hard work on this project, and their ongoing care and concern for the people of PNG.

20.01.2022 The sights and views from Abuari village and their amazing waterfall. Isurava village can be seen across the valley gives you a sense of enormity of the battle...field. Four battalions were engaged in the battle on two sides of the valley that comprised of the 39th and 53rd militia battalion and the 2/14th and 2/16th AIF battalions. The Japanese forces overwhelmed the Australian positions and forced them into withdrawal. The Australian soldiers were battered but far from beaten. The diggers and brigadier Potts kept a fighting force between the the Japanese and Port Moresby until the tide turned with a strong offensive from Imita ridge. Our boys fought hard for our freedom and eventually Papua New Guinea independence. Lest We Forget #etaescapes #kokoda

12.01.2022 Today we commemorate the capture of Kokoda, New Guinea. The capture of Kokoda enabled the Australian advance across the Owen Stanley Range to continue, leading ...to victory in New Guinea. On November 2, 1942 members of the 2/31st Battalion entered Kokoda unopposed to find the Japanese forces had left two days prior. By mid afternoon that day the entire battalion was in place in Kokoda and the airstrip and the Kokoda village was secure. The impact of retaking Kokoda was immeasurable. At this stage in the campaign 'Kokoda' had become a household word in Australian cities and towns. The retaking of this small village on a long and winding track through hostile jungle in the Owen Stanley Range was seen by all, even those with little military knowledge, as a huge turning point in the New Guinea campaign. #remembertoremember Image Courtesy: Australian War Memorial

11.01.2022 Corporal Charlie McCallum The battle of Isurava took place during August 1942. The first of the Australian defenders standing in the way of the highly skilled ...Japanese war machine at Isurava was the 39th and 53rd Battalions. The Japanese Army landed on the Northern beaches and packed marched directly to the Isurava battlefront. They wore the untrained Australian defenders down to breaking point infiltrating the 39th positions on many occasions. The Afternoon of the 26 August 1942 the forward elements of the 2/14th battalion arrived to at first what was to relieve the 39th battalion. However, the 39th battalion stood by their Australian comrades to try and stop the relentless Japanese advance. Additional reinforcements arrived for both sides, and the ascendency of battle ebbed and flowed. Slowly but surely, the Japanese gained enough advantage and infiltration of the Australian positions. A number of Australian soldiers courageous actions occurred during the battle non more famous than that of Private Bruce Steel Kingsbury of 2/14 Battalion, for his actions at Isurava on 29 August Kingsbury was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). However, Kingsbury was not the only Australian to be recommended for VC action. At least four VC recommendations were made; however, these recommendations were rejected, and lesser gallantry awards provided. The gallantry Corporal Charlie McCallum of 2/14th Battalion at Isurava in August is one of the standout actions of the Kokoda campaign. McCallum was wounded three times during the Isurava encounter; he pinned the enemy down with a Bren gun in his right hand and a Thompson sub-machine gun in his left. McCallum while reloading the Bren gun one-handed would bring his Tommy gun into action simultaneously. McCallum kept up this extraordinary juggling of weapons until all the mates in his platoon had escaped the Japanese. The attacking Japanese had, in fact, come so close to McCallum that his utility pouch was torn from his belt as he evaded the Japanese grip. McCallums action sounding more like Rambo than Anzac was recommended for a Victoria Cross. The top brass decided it was not considered appropriate and McCallum was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, only to be killed in action a week later in the Brigade Hill battle. McCallum died when trying to oust the Japanese who had infiltrated the Australian defences. Lest We Forget

05.01.2022 Local communities and tourist groups will now have a safer and smoother ride to the Kokoda Tracks southern gateway following completion of repair works on Ower...s Corner Road. The project engaged local people as traffic controllers and maintenance workers, providing employment at a time when the Kokoda Track is closed to tourists due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The road repairs continues on from an upgrading of the nearby Vesulogo Bridge earlier this year. The ongoing #PNGAusPartnership supported redevelopments will ensure benefits for local communities and to have the region ready for when the track reopens. See more
