13.01.2022 The story of this baby wombat - Wednesday afternoon I was driving back from the tip and saw this baby wombat on the road. I tried to drive around him but he crawled under the Ute. I slowly pulled over and realised that he was not in good shape. He had scans on his back, I could get quite close to him and it was also day time (almost 2pm) so I put him in a box and took him home. He was eating grass quite well on our yard. Overnight we put him in a box and he ate grass clipping...s and then settled down to sleep. Around 12 noon the next day he wanted to crawl out of the box and eat more grass. I had contacted the Wombat Protection Society Australia by this time and spoke to a wonderful lady, Jen and she was finding me someone who could look after the wombat and nurse it back to health. We were put in touch with an amazing lady, Debbie who volunteers for Wires and already is looking after 8 wombats. We met her roughly half way from her place and handed baby Maurice (Sophies name for the womby) over to her. He has apparently been attacked and had a lot of ticks on him. He perhaps lost his Mum to a fatality and tried to join another family and was attacked as they are solitary animals as adults. That second night he was put on subcutaneous fluids, antibiotics, and had a dose of cydectin to get rid of the ticks and ear mites. He was eating grass and carrots like a trooper and then curled up on Debbies husbands lap for some well deserved sleep. The next morning he was still well and had some milk and then had some rest after that. Debbie is confident he will be able to be nursed back to health and be able to be released back into the wild at some stage.
