23.01.2022 DESTINY is now open at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square. Destiny Deacon and Virginia Fraser created this interior specifically for this exhibition. Over the past thirty years, Deacon has created a number of domestic interiors presented inside gallery settings. These lounge rooms and kitchens are always, to an extent, based on Deacon’s own home. Objects, photographs, posters, flags and various knick-knacks turn otherwise ordinary domestic interiors into identi...fiably blak spaces. The room is filled with Deacon's personal collection of 'Koori kitsch'. At best, these knick-knacks portray Aboriginal people as merely decoration and at worst, represent overtly racist perspectives of Aboriginal people. Over the years Deacon has amassed a considerable collection of Koori kitsch. In her own words, she has been rescuing Koori kitsch ‘since forever’: ‘In the beginning I wanted to rescue them, because otherwise they’d end up in a white home or something, somewhere no one would appreciate them.’ By amassing her personal collection and putting it inside the Gallery, Deacon challenges audiences to consider how everyday material culture can be, and often is, inherently racist. Deacon also elevates these objects, removing their status as derogatory and giving them with a second, more dignified, life. 20.01.2022 We are very proud to announce that In Absence, the 2019 NGV Architecture Commission has been selected from across the globe to win the Small Buildings category of the 2020 @Dezeen Awards. The judges described this thought-provoking and immersive work by contemporary artist and Kokatha and Nukunu woman Yhonnie Scarce and Melbourne architecture studio Edition Office as ‘a beacon of hope; powerful and visceral’. In Absence asks audiences to better understand the fallacy of the p...remise of Terra Nullius, which declared Australia as an emptiness awaiting ownership, by revealing and celebrating over 3000 generations of Indigenous design, industry and agriculture. This well-deserved recognition is one of many accolades awarded to In Absence over the past twelve months. Congratulations to Scarce, Edition Office and the team who brought this incredible installation to life. 20.01.2022 In this next instalment of Depth of Field: Indigenous Photographers we take a look at the work of Ricky Maynard: Ricky Maynard is a descendant of the Big River and Ben Lomond peoples of Tasmania. Maynard began to photograph in 1969, at the age of sixteen, drawn to possibility that the camera could create weapons of a subtle resistance to a triumphalist and deceitful history. Wik Elder, Gladys is one of six large-scale portraits of Wik Elders from the Returning to Places ...that Name Us series, 2000, which Maynard created on a six-week visit to their community of Aurukun in Western Cape York, northern Queensland. The portraits are the result of gaining the sitters trust and getting to know them, a methodology pivotal to Maynards practice, which is a deliberate reversal of ethnographic and historic photography of Aboriginal people in Australia. The highly dramatic portraits invite empathy and give power to the Wik peoples successful struggle for native title. Wik Elder, Gladys is a close-cropped portrait of an Indigenous woman, whose face fills the entire frame and who stares gently but defiantly into the camera. The subject is the fearless native title advocate Gladys Tybingoompa who memorably danced outside the High Court in Canberra after the court ruled in favour of the Wik native title claim in 1996. This work was generously gifted by Milton and Penny Harris. #NGVEveryDay Ricky Maynard Wik Elder, Gladys 2000 from the Returning to places that name us series 2000 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Gift of Milton and Penny Harris, 2007 Ricky Maynard/Licensed by Copyright Agency, Australia

14.01.2022 Anamnesis is a work by Matt McLean, a 2019 VCE student selected to display his work in the NGVs Top Arts 2020 exhibition. Anamnesis tells a story of the artists grandfather, Norman, who has Alzheimers disease. The work explores the multifaceted and fragile nature of memory, as well as the impact that loss of memory has on a person and their family. In this portrait, three emotions pride, sorrow and bliss are captured to communicate the different emotional states No...rman can experience in a single conversation. The portrait is rendered in graphite pencil on tan paper, using meticulous mark-making to capture the sitters personality and the familys experience. Applications for Top Arts 2021 are now open. 14.01.2022 NEW ACQUISITION: A rare, large-scale oil on canvas by Australian artist Iso Rae has recently joined the NGV Collection. Born in Melbourne on 18 August 1860, Iso Rae attended the National Gallery of Victoria Art School between 1877 and 1887. In August 1887, together with her mother and sister Alison, Rae left Australia and settled in Paris. In the summer of 1888, the family travelled to Étaples, a popular seaside destination for artists. In 1893 they settled there permanen...tly, and Rae became an active member of the large expatriate artist community. She exhibited regularly and her painting Pierrot was one of the first works by an Australian artist to be acquired by a French institution purchased by the Musée Quentovic in Étaples in 1892. Painted c.1893 Young Girl, Étaples is characteristic of Raes work, with its large-scale figure and high horizon line. It has been speculated that the subject of this work may have been the child of a friend. An inscribed portrait watercolour miniature of the same child remained in the artists family until Raes death in 1940. Despite a charming sense of intimacy, the substantial scale of Young Girl, Étaples lends an unusual, monumental quality to this subject. This important acquisition was purchased for the NGV Collection through the generosity of Krystyna Campbell-Pretty AM and Family, Professor Graham Peirson and Christine Peirson and the Norma Atwell Bequest. #NGVEveryDay Iso Rae Young girl, Étaples c.1892 (detail)

13.01.2022 In this weeks edition of NGV Depth of Field: Indigenous Photographers, we explore the work of Michael Riley: Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist Michael Riley was an outstanding photographer and filmmaker whose iconic works challenged non-Indigenous perceptions of Indigenous experience in Australia. Flyblown, 1999 is a conceptual photographic series based on beauty and decay in the Australian landscape, notable for its recurring motifs of the dead galah and cloud-reflecting cross. ... Cloud, 2000, Rileys last and most acclaimed photographic series, was the first body of work he conceived in a digital medium, as Riley states: Cloud was quite a resolved exhibition for me, in that it brought all elements together: my childhood, the Christianity from my childhood, the problems with that, and also histories of Aboriginal people. Untitled (cow), from Cloud, is a surreal image of a Hereford cow floating in a cloud, which has disturbing connotations as Riley explained: I tried to make connections by showing something like the cow floating in an ethereal sort of sky a strange animal to Aboriginal people, yet its also an animal Aboriginal people would kill when food supplies were running out. Aboriginal people would actually be shot or hunted down for doing these things, for trying to survive, themselves. #NGVEveryDay Michael Riley Untitled 1998 from the Flyblown series 1998 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Purchased NGV Foundation, 2008 Michael Riley/Licensed by Copyright Agency, Australia Michael Riley Untitled 1998 from the Flyblown series 1998 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Purchased NGV Foundation, 2008 Michael Riley/Licensed by Copyright Agency, Australia Michael Riley Untitled (cow) 2000 From the cloud series National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Purchased with funds donated by Linda Herd and donors to the 2020 NGV Annual Appeal Michael Riley Foundation. 08.01.2022 Need a new it bag? Have a look at some of our recent acquisitions At the height of 1990s logomania, Moschino released a series of handbags that parodied the trend for expensive designer accessories. Among them was this Antica Pasticceria pastry box bag (c.1991), a witty take on the expression let them eat cake, frequently misattributed to Marie Antoinette. Equally absurdist is Chanels extra-large Hula hoop bag (2013). While Maison Margielas rare Helmet bag (2006)..., made from an actual black motorcycle helmet, highlights the designers conceptual approach and interest in deconstructing notions of value in fashion. 08.01.2022 Each week we are taking a closer look at the photography of an artist in the NGV Collection through a series entitled Depth of Field: Indigenous Photographers. Michael Cooks Majority Rule series, like much of his work, ruminates on the impact of colonialism: the subjugation and racism that results from the fact that the majority always has the rule and the minority doesnt. In these meticulously staged, architectonic photographic tableaux, set in 1930s40s Australian capital... cities, Cook invites the viewer to speculate on what Australia would be like if Aboriginal people comprised 96 per cent of the population and white people the remaining four per cent. He thereby conjures up a number of dramatic role reversals in a very different Australia from the one we currently inhabit. The repeated image of an immaculately dressed Indigenous man subverts the expectation of viewers accustomed to seeing no such faces on city streets or occupying positions of power and influence, at the High Court or in the Senate. Cooks Majority Rule (Tunnel) is located in a tiled underground passageway, a quotidian space customarily packed with jostling commuters, rushing to and from work. It is a society of conformity, in which individuals, isolated from each other and frozen in time, stare towards the viewer, as if trapped in a mechanised pattern of existence. The work parallels John Bracks Collins Street at 5pm, except that Indigenous men have reclaimed this urban site from the colonisers. #NGVEveryDay Michael Cook Senate 2014 no. 5 from the Majority Rule series 2014 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Yvonne Pettengell Bequest, 2014 Courtesy of the artist Michael Cook Tunnel 2014 no. 2 from the Majority Rule series 2014 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Yvonne Pettengell Bequest, 2014 Courtesy of the artist Michael Cook Court 2014 no. 7 from the Majority Rule series 2014 National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Yvonne Pettengell Bequest, 2014 Courtesy of the artist
