23.01.2022 Our plans to do all sorts of things including to offer a bit of childrens and teens yoga over the school break got lost amongst my own overwhelm and chaos! If our young yogis and their families have also been feeling a little WHOA of late, I hope that as the next few weeks of schooling unfold we all start to find our footing again. With school return dates being so variable across schools and families we wont schedule the classes back on permanently just yet - well s...ee how the term unfolds for you all. For now though wed like to offer a free class next Wednesday 13th May with Caroline - so our young yogis can stay connected to Caroline, to yoga, and each other. As the weeks progress well make a decision as to when its the right time to restart the classes ongoing. 10.01.2022 Stretched, challenged, wound up in knots. Weve all been feeling the feels. NSW has not yet suggested a safe reopening timeline for yoga studios (were in the same category as gyms). Ive seen plenty of fitness businesses lamenting this of late - complaining that wed all be better off if we had a place to workout again, more so that being able to down a pint at the pub. But Im of the view that itll all come in good time. Yes theres been inconsistencies all along wi...th the management of CO-19, but of course there would be. Were each just doing our best in the moment - including those who have the heavy task of deciding when and how businesses and places of public gathering can and should reopen. So hang tight. 08.01.2022 Straight legs or bent? Part 2/2 BELLY A way to gauge if or when bent knees might be in order in Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), is how far the belly is from the thighs. If bending the knees will allow the spine to stay long, and to draw abdomen closer toward the thighs, then try that. Or, if you feel the lower back rounding or strain in the hamstrings, bend the knees more. ... So, belly to thighs, and try to lift the hips using activation of the muscles in the legs. WHEN NOT TO STRAIGHTEN For those who hyperextend their knees (pushing the back of the knee out), engaging the thighs with knees a little bent is important to preserve the joint in practice. 07.01.2022 Straight legs or bent? Part 1/2 Thanks @yin.auyeung for the question! Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend) and Ardha Uttanasana (Halfway Lift) are forward bends, intended to stretch out the entire back surface of the body, from muscles to connective tissue to spinal vertebrae, but especially felt in the hamstrings, shoulders and upper back, and the entire spine. ... But to bend or straighten the legs? As is so often the answer, that depends! HAMSTRINGS Elastic hamstring tendons have limits to the load/stress (stretch) they can handle. But they adapt to a healthy amount of stress/load - getting stronger with strong muscle contraction but not with light or passive stretching. Whether the knee is bent, or straight, you can increase the strength of muscle contraction for the hamstrings. Hence youll often hear Tamara say "strong thighs!" in these poses. HIPS A large part of the forward bend action happens at the hips. Tight hips or their skeletal structure might limit the pelvis range of motion. Equally, tight hamstrings - which join knee to sitting bones of the pelvis, may also limit the forward rotation of the pelvis. Bent knees are a way to mitigate you getting stuck at the hips. Our western lifestyles arent great on the hamstrings, or hips - we need to give these things plenty of time to open. What with us spending sooooo much time in each others company at the moment Im watching where they each are strong, less strong, and just irritating. The yoga philosophy of the gunas teaches that the interplay of our energies and an understanding of that interplay in oursel...ves is ESSENTIAL in cultivating a bit of personal harmony. In modern philosophy the weakness of strength theory teaches that every virtue has an associated weakness and to be a little inquisitive about our or others seeming weaknesses.
