25.01.2022 Cymbidium canaliculatum, otherwise known as the tiger orchid or black orchid, a native to our Townsville campus, though this one we suspect was planted out many years ago. Please remember it is extremely illegal to touch wild orchids, and even to touch our landscaped specimen as some individuals have done in the past, we want to share these with everyone and cannot do this if they are stolen. To date we have only located 19 of this species on campus.

23.01.2022 With the end of semester fast approaching why not pop down to the JCU Townsville garden clubs Halloween event to unwind in the garden and learn how you can get a spot of gardening in over the covid restricted break.

22.01.2022 Some of you may have noticed some blackened grasses around our Townsville campus lately. We are thankful for the work of the combined rural fire services that participated in their low intensity back-burning operations, reducing the risk of wildfire to our campus and residential facilities, while protecting our native wildlife and flora.

17.01.2022 A lot of our Townsville campus plants are coming into flower over the coming months, so to keep you photo ready and in the action TropEco has decided to alert you as the key players flower. We also ask you tag us in your pics, on Facebook or Instagram, or like our posts so we know if this needs to be a usual post. This first batch contains a pink Tabebuia at the front of Engineering, the second a yellow flowered Acacia racospermoides by the Science place.

06.01.2022 TropEco and OIRS teamed up to bring some of our students over to Orpheus Island for a week of weed control, which they killed, resulting in the removal of all of the JCU plots Prickly pear plants, as well as over a tonne of Bryophyllum delagoense and pinnatum. They also snuck in the odd snorkel and night walks and had a great time seeing the islands shells, sharks and rays in their natural habitat. A big thanks to the students that helped....
