25.01.2022 Tropical Vet Services are seeking several experienced Vets to JOIN OUR TEAM. Come and work in the Northern Tropics of Queensland. Escape the southern states where you can enjoy the sun, rainforest, Great Barrier Reef, and much, much more, without COVID-19 lockdowns and other restrictions! Experienced Vets are being sought for vacancies at several of our clinics for those that are wanting to relocate to our beautiful part of the world. ... Tropical Vet Services is a privately owned group of clinics based on the North Queensland tropical coast between Babinda (to the North) and Ayr (to the South). We have five full-service clinics and three, smaller satellite clinics. All of our clinics are mixed animal clinics and our five main clinics are set up with full in-house blood machines, digital xray, ultrasounds (small and large animal), endoscopes etc. Our group of practices currently employ 19 Veterinarians across our clinics. Their interests include - Small Animal orthopaedics (including cruciates and fracture repairs) - Bovine Reproduction (including ET, FTAI and BBSE’s), nutrition and production - Equine reproduction (including AI’s), dentals and medicine - Small animal behaviour - Wildlife work (including Crocodiles and Cassowaries) - Remote Indigenous Community work on Cape York Tropical Vets are also seeking new graduates wanting to start out in a job where they will be supported via our ‘New Graduate Program’. Our new graduate program includes monthly zoom hook ups within Tropical Vet Services to discuss cases or particular topics, tutorials with visiting specialists and when time allows days out on farm doing routine horse or cattle procedures. We do have specialists that work with us so we can offer internal referrals for those cases that need it and North Queensland is blessed with travelling specialists in Dermatology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Surgery that visit the region for those extra tricky cases. Salary will be well above award and is negotiable. Afterhours on call work is part of the job but you will be well compensated for it (including working a 4-day week each week). 21.01.2022 Separation Anxiety in our Dogs... If COVID-19 has had a silver lining, it’s been getting to spend more time with our pets. Dogs all over the world have enjoyed snuggling into laps while their humans held video conferences and worked away on the phone or computer. Frequent walks and one-on-one time has become more regular, and we’ve all loved it. But a topic of discussion amongst vets, with the easing of restrictions, is whether we’ll see an increase in separation anxiety in ...our dogs? Separation anxiety affects up to 20% of dogs, and is one of the most under-diagnosed behaviour conditions. We see it in dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes, but it is more common in those who have been lost, dumped or surrendered; those that lack foundation training, and those dogs that never leave their owner’s side. Dogs who suffer separation anxiety will usually display signs before three years of age. It’s important to be able to recognize the signs so you can seek early treatment for your pet. It could change their life! Contact us if your dog starts any of these unwanted behaviours when you’re not at home: Vocalisation (howling and barking) Inappropriate elimination in the house Periods of destruction (destroying things your dog wouldn’t normally be interested in, such as the door frame where he sees you enter and exit the house). Excessive digging Together, we’ll determine why your dog is behaving this way when you’re not at home. The best way to do this is capture some video footage, which will give us a good indication of whether your dog is displaying signs of separation anxiety or just acting out. There are also a few things you can do help prevent separation anxiety when things change around your home. 1. Encourage calm, quiet time during the day and have a specific rest spot for your dog. This should be a place for quiet time, with no human interaction 2. Encourage independence in your dog. If your dog seeks attention by pushing his nose under your hand for a pat etc, make sure you ask him to earn the reward. 3. Spend periods of time away from your dog. Leaving him behind when on trips to the supermarket, post office etc. 4. Share the jobs involved with caring for your dog between family members. 5. Don’t make a drama or fuss when you’re leaving and coming home. 6. Provide the right amount of exercise, mental stimulation, training and an enriched environment. Be consistent and take the time to correct when needed. Ensure your training is consistent and clear 7. Ensure you have a routine. Every living species thrives on routine. 8. Seek out knowledge about dog behaviour from books, the internet, a trainer and your vet. Remember, early recognition and treatment of anxiety can make a huge difference to your dog’s life. After lots of daily medication for weeks, Sophie’s eye has finally healed! This week Sophie also came to North Shore for a dental and after a few extractions is feeling much better

07.01.2022 Meet Ash - Northshores Pet of the week! Ash presented to the clinic very lethargic but she was diagnosed with a cancerous spleen which had ruptured and was bleeding into her abdomen! We rushed ash into surgery to remove her spleen and save her life! Ash is doing very well at home now without her spleen!

04.01.2022 This is Boston, Boston is Northshores Pet of the week Boston had extremely bad Gastro and was treated at out Northshore Clinic by Dr Nicola. He was very unwell when we saw him and required 3 days of hospitalisation before he started to show any signs of improvement As you can see he is an absolute cutie and won the hearts of all the nurses We were very happy to see him go home to his family!
