23.01.2022 This weeks focus is on WOODEN BLOCKS ... Block play provides one of the most valuable learning experiences available for young children. It stimulates learning in all areas of development. Block play encourages and develops:... BETTER MOTOR SKILLS Using blocks requires your child to put them in a position so that they dont topple over. As a result, hand-eye coordination improves the more the child plays. The act of grasping the blocks itself serves as good practice for gripping objects, and strengthens the fingers and hands of the child. MENTAL STIMULATION Children learn to think logically when they play with blocks. After a few tries at building something and watching the blocks topple over, your child will learn that the blocks have to be arranged and placed properly to prevent that from happening. An older child will also realise that a stronger base can be made if you arrange most of the blocks at the bottom. Logical thinking skills are crucial in a childs intellectual development. MATH AND VOCABULARY SKILLS Studies have shown that block play helps develop language and mathematical skills among children. Language skills develop when the child learns the names of the colours, shapes and sizes of building blocks. Mathematical skills are sharpened when a child learns to add up or subtract the number of building blocks required to build a structure. IMPROVES CREATIVITY Children learn how to create different structures using building blocks, and this stimulates their creative mind. Blocks offer a good base to encourage a childs creative abilities. ENCOURAGES POSITIVE SOCIAL INTERACTION Blocks are the type of toys that a child can share with others. By encouraging them to play together they learn how to interact and cooperate. This is among the first forms of teamwork your child can engage in. It may be difficult to comprehend how toys as simple as building blocks offer so many benefits, but its wonderful to know that age-old, simple toys can serve such good purposes. Blocks should be part of every childs toy-box!! Please check out our website for whats available www.troverlearning.tsite.com.au or just give us a call! 20.01.2022 This weeks focus is on MUSIC Babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers love listening to, singing, playing instruments and moving to MUSIC. MUSIC is a great learning tool for children, especially from a young age. Even playing music to babies in the womb can help them later on in life.... From birth, parents use MUSIC to calm and soothe children, to express their emotions, and to engage and interact. Studies have found that musical experiences in childhood can actually accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of language/reading. They also showed that learning to play an instrument can improve mathematical learning. But academic achievement isnt the only benefit of music. Music ignites all areas of child development - intellectual, social and emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It has the ability to strengthen the connection, between the body and brain, to work together as a team. Some benefits of MUSIC include: SPEECH AND VOCABULARY Singing songs and saying rhymes on a regular basis are proven to enhance early language and communication skills, and broaden a childs vocabulary. Also, as children hear music from an early age it helps them learn sounds and the meanings of words. BRAINPOWER AND MEMORY Actively participating in music-making has been shown to strengthen childrens cognitive and memory skills even more so than if they were simply listening. LISTENING SKILLS Singing songs and following directions (i.e. Hokey Pokey) assists with development of listening and comprehension skills. MOVEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION Moving to music, playing instruments and using props and puppets give children of all ages a chance to improve their gross and fine motor skills. SOCIAL INTERACTION Music encourages positive social skills and independence through interaction with other children. SELF-EXPRESSION Singing, dancing and playing instruments and musical games stimulate your childs creativity and imagination. MUSIC is a wonderful way for parents to nurture a special bond with their children. Not only is it a tool that contributes to the growth and development of a child, but it also helps the family to spend quality time and have fun. Children naturally love music! Whether its soft and soothing or a lively tune, children feel it both physically and emotionally, and it is important, as their guardians, to provide them with as many opportunities as possible, to be exposed to it!

05.01.2022 This weeks focus is on WOODEN TAP TAP resources ... The development of childrens fine motor skills is an important foundation for future skills such as writing and drawing, and it will also help them as they learn to manipulate things in a more controlled fashion. Construction and manipulative resources help to promote a variety of cognitive and physical skills. They encourage problem solving and logical thinking to solve issues such as where the next piece goes and how to ...make the structure that they want to build. Social, communication and language skills are all improved through playing with these type of resources. Children build perseverance as they build their constructions. Play encourages creativity, imagination, perseverance and the development of language and social skills. Children become more confident and develop a stronger sense of identity through play. It is no wonder that WOODEN TAP TAP resources are such a favourite educational toy in the development of fine motor skills - it is elegant in its simplicity and combines creativity with coordination! WOODEN TAP TAP resources sit almost permanently on the shelves of Playgroup/Kindy/Pre-primary shelves, and are part of most childrens toys at home. Children will sit and attend to their tap-tapping for long periods of time. Hammering the brass nails into the holes requires close attention and fine motor control, so this is a great activity for refining hand-eye coordination. The wooden shapes do have pre-drilled holes for the nails. These are deliberately quite small, with the right amount of space for the nail to fit snugly. This means that there is not much room for error when lining up the nail with the hole, and this ensures that the activity promotes attention to detail and fine motor dexterity. WOODEN TAP TAP play allows for a progression in difficulty. Initially, the activity can be presented with just a few shapes and nails, so that a child can acquire the physical skills required. Then, once the child has mastered the hammering, the activity can be extended by introducing more shapes to allow for the physical aspect to be combined with a more complex artistic expression. WOODEN TAP TAP activities provide children with a medium to express their creativity and explore problem solving - it is a kinaesthetic experience that embeds a deep memory. As the guardians of our children, we should provide them with as many opportunities, as possible, to be exposed to these experiences!
