25.01.2022 Beautiful morning!!

25.01.2022 Lucky to have so many trails for shared use around #Adelaide. Great muddy and wet ride. #adventure #therapy #nature #teens #mtb #wellness

25.01.2022 A great read about canoeing. We love canoeing and hope to expand our fleet next year. Way to go Paddle & Portage Canoes!

25.01.2022 A friend of mine in the United States shared this photo on her timeline today. Her son, in Year 7, was getting his school photos taken this week and here are some of the options available for parents to "improve the image" of their children, for a small price. I was pretty shocked and had to share. Have other parents experienced something similar here in Australia? And some of the experts, any thoughts? 24.01.2022 Met up with a participant who attended his second expedition with us as a mentor in May. I owed him some more beads since he bankrupted us by getting awarded so many burly beads (black ones). Red symbolises learning to spark a fire. Blue is for shelter. Yellow is for putting somebody else before you. Green for hiking the tallest mountains. Participants earn black burly beads for doing something epic in the bush, such as carrying more than one pack up a mountain. This participant took four. Between two expeditions, this participant shattered the record collecting 30 burly beads. So impressive. The stuff of True North folklore. #youth #motivation #australia #health #nature #mentalhealth

24.01.2022 Can’t wait to read this!

24.01.2022 Yes to this!! Make sure your young ones continue building amazing experiences!

24.01.2022 We hear about this all the time for our participants. In the bush, our goal is to set up a thriving environment rich with success and mastery.

23.01.2022 Nice Wednesday morning reminder. Thanks for sharing OEASA - Outdoor Educators' Association of South Australia

23.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who has reached out while were away in a short expedition. Were bunkered up in a cabin on Hindmarsh Island keeping cool. Hope everyone is safe from fire and staying cool and hydrated. Thanks for all you do Radicool Reptiles!

22.01.2022 Amidst all this uncertainty, I feel it is my responsibility to write a post surrounding True North Expeditions and our way forward. Given that I have always managed to balance the practitioner/researcher role, I am grateful that Charles Sturt University has provided me with work to support my family as a social work lecturer and researcher during this crisis. In saying that, I have decided to close doors for True North Expeditions for at least the next 90 days, while we all... adapt our new lives with COVID-19. I dont feel it is right to ask people to travel interstate (and sometimes internationally) at these stages and do not risk putting anyone in ill health. We are following closely the recommendations from the government and professionals. We will remain active on social media and you can contact us for information in the meantime. Our philosophy and work is not going anywhere, but we are going to be put on hold while we allow time for the dust to settle. Take care of each other. Be kind. Well be in touch soon.

22.01.2022 Healthy and open communication is critical for wellbeing among adolescents. Here is a funny reminder from Saturday Night Live. What has worked for you? Maybe podcasting is worth a try? https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7mlum4

22.01.2022 Along with our usual work of talking to parents about our expeditions, we’ve had a lot of interest in our individual #therapy services this week. We love meeting new people and know it can be intimidating for all #people, young or old, to seek #help. After our first meeting, we create a ‘Service Delivery Agreement’. As administrative and bureaucratic as that sounds, this is developed entirely using the voice of the #teens who we are intending to #support. Their #voice is most... important. Teenagers can be called ‘resistant’ to therapeutic help. They get used to people telling them to improve and can feel more demoralised about the helping process. This is why we shift the centre of gravity to them. What do they want? We ask how they will know if coming to see us was worth it. Then we work together to make life the daring adventure it always is. #mentalhealth #wellbeing #hope #australia #adelaide #nature #adventure See more

22.01.2022 Want to make your Friday the 13th a bit more #positive? Well do it. You have just one week to register for my friends @authenticu #wellbeing and resilience workshop. Greg and Jen have been leaders in the world of positive psychology, providing workshops and training across #Australia. Dont miss them in Victor Harbor, #SA. Did I mention both have over ten years of #adventure therapy experience?! Get on it!

21.01.2022 We work with amazing people. Tomorrow, our best friend Bachy goes under the knife for some work on his shoulder. While we would prefer him to stop being better than us at all sports, we wish him a speedy recover. All the best my friend. Love you brother.

19.01.2022 Possibly a bit too nerdy, but my good friend Dr Nevin Harper from University of Victoria in Vancouver, Canada recently delivered a webinar about his new book Nature-Based Therapy. There are many takeaways from the discussion, such as the importance of play, risk, and family involvement in our programs. https://vimeo.com/385311926?ref=em-share

19.01.2022 Another opportunity for those in South Australia looking for an adventure therapy flavoured experience with Optimistic Kids!

19.01.2022 Someone is not too happy about our upcoming program. #canoe #mentalhealth #australia

19.01.2022 Missing this place. Well be back soon!

19.01.2022 Good morning! We are absolutely thrilled to have had 41mm of rain at Bendleby Ranges! The sounds of happy birds (and people ) and the smell of freshness is incredible. We hope that everyone who needed it, got a decent drop in this rain event! www.bendlebyranges.com.au

18.01.2022 So many clichés about rating the journey over the destination...but we agree. That said, knowing where you’re headed is vital. How would you otherwise know if you’re going the right direction? This is why we adopt a future focus with our participants. Let’s unlock your preferred future. Wouldn’t that be thrilling?! #adventure #therapy #mentalhealth #hope #wellbeing #nature #outdoors #wellbeing #mindfulness

18.01.2022 While we adhere to the notion that the best therapists deserve no thank yous, since its the wonderful people we work with who do the hard work. That said, this was such a lovely surprise in the #holiday season. Cant wait get back out on our next #adventure. Thanks to everyone who came out this year! #gratitude #mentalhealth #wellbeing #australia #outdoors #therapy #nature

18.01.2022 #change is inevitable. When stuck, we can zoom in and explore all the little things changing within and all around us. Or we can zoom out and focus our attention to how far weve come. The stance we take will determine what we see.

17.01.2022 Oh boy...any excuse to go to the property...I hear there will be parties. What about a True North reunion with all our past participants?

17.01.2022 Our September expedition is filling fast. Two positions remain. Wondering if #adventure #therapy is right for your #family? Get in touch! #mentalhealth #wellbeing #teens #outdoors #australia

17.01.2022 I did a fun thing with my #teen this year. We decided to try and celebrate every day and the video below is a recap of our journey. Pretty goofy for sure but so much fun to make. I spoke with Lucas about what we could do with our final product. He spoke about sharing a message on having parents and step-parents around him who are open, fun, and genuine. He reminded me of my work with parents and remembering The Four Crucial Cs:... 1) Connection 2) Capability 3) Counting 4) Courage Teens that have a #connection to nurturing adults can feel capable that what they contribute with matter and count...and then they can take truly #courageous steps. We both hope you enjoy the goofy year weve had. We hope the message of #ConnectionBeforeCorrection can go viral when it comes to teenagers, mental health, and wellbeing. If youd like to share, comment, or like the video please do so. Connection before Correction. Happy new year! Will and Lucas

15.01.2022 We are so lucky to get to explore such a beautiful place. Even better....we have our own secret bush camps!! No one knows since we always aim to leave no trace. Except at Will’s Cabin!

15.01.2022 There are no words which could capture tonights #camp...but Ill try! After a challenging day which required adapting to the weather and heat, our small group found ourselves on a small isolated island huddled under a tarp for shade. After the paddle to the island, we talked, had a coffee, and lunch and the afternoon seemed to slip by to dinner time. As the sun sank below the dunes, we emerged from the shelter and sat quietly observing the stillness. Birds caught fish (we di...dnt) and we sat quietly as the fire crackled. The first three stars to emerge were Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. All aligned. Today was one of those days when stars aligned. Wow! This short trip has held a different theme to usual ones. Where many expeditions are high tempo and adventurous, the theme leaving the participants is peacefulness, and how we can take moments like these and transfer them to life at home. #wellbeing #adventuretherapy #wildernesstherapy #australia #mentalhealth #anxietytips See more

13.01.2022 This photo from Eden Hills Country Fire Services Facebook page shows some of the heartbreak from the recent fires. Here, a #firefighter and koala. This has been a tough time of year and we have been checking in on our clients and families in the danger zones. We are additionally saddened by the damage done to some of our favourite outdoor and most beautiful outdoor areas. We hope for healing to come to these areas soon. For us outdoor therapists, these damaging changes are of particular interest to us.

12.01.2022 We all cherish the opportunity to work #outdoors with people, as do many of our #therapy participants. In the current climate, however, we need to adopt strategies that not only improve our consumers experiences, but advocate our work to funding bodies, insurance companies, and other third party payers. Many of you may have heard me talk about this at various conferences and in certain journal articles. After adopting these practical concepts, I have never looked back. I use...d my outcomes to help our organization gain recognition from local government, departments of #education, and #disability/#veterans services. My hope for #adventure, #wilderness, and outdoor therapy is that we can share, despite our diversity, that this stuff works and works well!! Lets get to it! Over the course of four webinars, Scott and I will show you how, along with recordings of #outdoor therapy sessions, to operationalize the available research findings so you can not only advocate for your program and practice, but develop plans to improve your outcomes. https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/making-the-outdoors-count-enhan #mentalhealth #psychotherapy #counseling #socialwork #rxoffthecouch #nature See more

11.01.2022 We’ll miss the incredible Kat for the next few months as she heads for more work experience in Alice Springs. At least she’ll be back in a few weeks for the Australian Association for Bush #Adventure #Therapy National Forum in early August. Can’t wait!

10.01.2022 Another fantastic #aabatforum2019 is in the books. I was MC for a panel on difficult discussions, ran two 90 minute workshops, and was guest speaker on an overnight expedition. So many wonderful people sharing so many wonderful ideas. 09.01.2022 This looks like an important movie. Will definitely watch. Maybe an important resource for those working with teens. Worth the watch, very moving. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/thefirstdayrental

08.01.2022 Our #parent webinars and workbook have received positive feedback from the families of #teens who have come on our programs. 08.01.2022 From expedition #1. March 2013.

08.01.2022 Are between the ages of 15-23. Did you attend one of our expeditions in the last 5 years? If so, you are invited to take part in a study conducted by True North’s great friend Graham Pringle. Graham’s study is focused on the use of adventure therapy with teenagers, not an evaluation of our programs....and don’t worry...nothing you say will come back to us. The interview is 100% confidential! If you’d like to participate or have questions, email [email protected].

08.01.2022 We’ve worked with Radicool Reptiles and have always loved Nadia! Definitely an inspiring woman!

08.01.2022 A huge thank you to everyone who helped us with our recent short program! Thanks to Kylie for guiding us at Garden Island to see the incredible mangroves and baby dolphin. Thanks to Jackson Holtham for mentoring us on day one. Your contributions are always welcomed! Chris Hodgson for lending us a second canoe from his outdoor Ed program. Thank you to Spare Krab - Outdoor Learning and Adventure Therapy Specialist for the additional clinical supervision and Greg Hatcher for organising the surfing we didnt end up doing. It takes a village and weve got quite a crew in Australia! As always, thanks to @kaatsharp for being my sidekick! #wellbeing #adventure #therapy #mentalhealth #canoe #australia

07.01.2022 It was not until the 1990s that the the US government did its first major study on the impact of trauma. We are still operating under the paradigm that trauma i...s big events while not understanding that it isnt the event at all. Its how the event is processed. As much as wed love to have a scale of trauma a simple measure, its this belief that causes so much shame + suffering. Trauma is not just severe neglect + abuse. At its core trauma is just a word to describe any experience where the emotional response was too big to process. If these events happened chronically (usually they do) we develop coping mechanisms + behaviors to survive. As mental illness continues to rise, so will our awareness that maybe we arent mentally ill after all. Maybe we have having normal reactions to trauma. Trauma is the experience of not been seen, heard, and authentically expressed. Its the disconnect from self that inevitably becomes disconnect from everyone around us. We then operate in survival mode, desperately seeking the next thing to distract us from our pain. Just as trauma creates a disconnect from our core self, it also can be the path to finding our way home. Trauma can lead us to awakening, to reclaiming ourselves, + to finding purpose. Its what unites us in our human experience, + can gently push us to access our healing #selfhealers

02.01.2022 Should #therapy be long-term or short-term? Actually this is a difficult question to answer. If therapy is going well, it’s worth continuing. If not, the opposite. #Research suggests that the earliest #change occurs in therapy, the better the outcome. So what does this mean for how we meet young people? We have to start with success and mastery! #hope #adventure #mentalhealth #australia
