25.01.2022 The liminal space between Christmas and the New Year is such a beautiful time to slow down, reflect and consider what you will create for yourself moving into a new year. Consider what you will continue doing; what has served you this year, brought you growth and joy? What will you stop doing, to make space for something new; what habits, relationships, mindsets and behaviours have not been helping you feel and be your best? And with that new time and space you have created,... what’s going to be different in 2020? What is something new you will try (and maybe fail at a few times!)? What do you want to start doing? And remember it’s all part of the process, of you break the routine, fall back into old habits, are unkind to yourself. It’s all part of the new learning. Pick yourself up, be kind to your learning and try again, try it differently and take on the learnings! 24.01.2022 #whosaidthat Dr Dan Siegel is a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, author and executive director of Mindsight Institute. Growth only comes when we can understand where we are and where we want to be. Reflecting on our current state without shame, judgment or attachment. Instead with compassion, curiosity and a willingness to grow, we have the ability to allow ourselves to move forward. ... Moments of growth are uncomfortable, maybe even scary, we leave the safety of the familiar and venture into unknown territory. However, isn’t that the experience of being alive. #growth #reflection #mindfulness #tuesdaypeople
22.01.2022 For those of you who celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas! For those of you who use it as a nice excuse to see family and friends, enjoy it! And for those who are working, thank you! I always start to get giddy with excitement about what next year will bring at this point... The joy that comes with taking time off, having space to reflect and to create changes in our routine and life. Including time with important family and friends. ... Enjoy it, how you spend it. Warmly, Alex
22.01.2022 #whosaidthat Dr Paul Wong is a Canadian psychologist and professor who has made significant research contributions to learning theory, social cognition, existential psychology and positive psychology. I love what he says here about self reflection being an intimate date with yourself... it suggests a sense of self compassion in reflection, seeing the possibilities in yourself, that generosity we give to others being given to ourselves.... Ahead of the new year, it valuable to stop and reflect; what you have achieved, what helped and what you have learnt. Alex of Tuesday People will be at Serotonin tonight to support the formation of goals for 2020. 22.01.2022 Anyone else feeling a surge of pent up energy, rage, out bursts? It might be coming out in an increase in swearing, frustration or snapping? Isolation/lock down/whatever stage you are in, has been a wonderful engage of our yin energy. Our yin energy helps us stay calm, relaxed, still, reflective and accept things as they are. A lot of people I speak with have been enjoying the change of pace. However, as it goes on longer, I can feel a collective sense of restlessness. I not...ice it in myself, a want to engage my yang energy, our active energy! Our yang energy is strong and vibrant, it’s what gets us up in the morning, helps us stay active and engaged with life, see things in a fresh new way, move our body and get things done. How are you creating balance? A balance between the yin and yang so it doesn’t come out in anger and frustration? Some are playing music and dancing, dressing in bright colours, others are keeping up social zooms. There was even a wonderful article in The Age about a woman who has access to ocean swims and said she never regrets getting in the water. It’s time to give space to our yang. 21.01.2022 There is a requirement for safety in coaching, not the physical type, the psychological type. The ability for a client to be able to say what ever is on their mind and make mistakes, without fear of negative consequences. The importance of this is that once a client says the thing we can work through what’s really going on for them. A client, who is a leader within her organisation, shared with me that she felt like she ‘should’ care about a decision a peer came to her wit...h. The peer held a very strong position and she admitted, guiltily, she just didn’t care. Should I? she asked me. Once she was able to bring this forward we started a conversation on what she did care about, she was clear on her values and what she saw as the priorities of her team. I asked why her teams role was important? Her response showed her passion and her care. It became clear for her, she didn’t care about the small decision as long as the bigger why was met. Without us having the safety in our relationship, she would not have been able to bring forward what was truely on her mind, something she felt guilt for, and ultimately achieve a breakthrough for herself, impacting the way she shows up at work. 16.01.2022 I’ve heard from a few of my clients that the isolation period feels like Groundhog Day! As much as I love Bill Murray, and that’s a lot, I struggled watching this film. It always struck me that he kept doing the same things that frustrated him everyday, it started to drive me crazy! As I think about my isolation time, I think my frustration with the film is clearer, if you are going to live the same day over and over, why don’t you fill it with things you enjoy? Create a ro...utine that makes you happy and content and you never know what will happen in between. Every day I make myself a coffee and take it for a walk, have breakfast, journal, work, take lunch, walk/meditate, work, wash my face, cook dinner and watch something with my husband. It may sound boring but I enjoy it. I enjoy seeing the leaves on the trees fall, the Yarra water going up and down, the riders passing me yelling we got a walker at 630am and chats with family and friends. And honestly each day is completely different! If you are starting to feel like Bill in Groundhog Day, consider, if you are going to live the same day over and over, what day would you like to live? 13.01.2022 #whosaidthat Dr Sasha Heinz has a Masters in positivity psychology and a PHD in developmental psychology. Through lived experience of having all the means that she should feel happy and instead feeling not enough. Sasha worked with a coach and was able to change her beliefs and behaviours and saw that anything was possible, deciding to make a career out of helping others. She poses the question: what’s the behaviour you want to change? What emotion sits behind it? And what ...belief about yourself sits behind that? It’s only when you make peace with and change the beliefs you hold about yourself that the behaviour can shift. What behaviour have you been wanting to change? #inspiration #empowerment #coach #melbournecoach #selfcare #timeforself #goals #achievement #learning #growth #femaleempowerment #selflove #tuesdaypeople #community #mindfulness
13.01.2022 The fear voice, you know it, it senses danger and goes to protect us. It’s a loud voice, evolutionarily we may have had a tiger in front of us, so it needed to get our attention! Now, it can get loud when we perceive a threat to our identity. This might stop us from putting ourselves out there, asking for what we really want or committing to a goal because, well, I never really wanted it anyway.... you know it?... The beauty is you can acknowledge this voice and thank it for its attempts to protect you. Then bring in your soothing, compassionate voice, I’m sure you know it, you probably use it with your loved ones or talking to a friend. It says things like you are perfect just the way you are, with all the imperfections... it’s going to be tough and that’s ok, you are trying new things. You’ll get there, I know you will. The beauty of the soothing voice is it allows you to focus on the original challenge, the goal, versus giving you two challenges, the goal and, now, anxiety from the way you are talking to yourself. The first step is to raise awareness to this and then learn to manage for yourself. 12.01.2022 I was struck this morning by the Behavioural Scientist newsletter title if things return to the way they were, we will have failed. Not only did I start to think about this on a societal level but also an individual level. Times of crisis, like what we are experiencing, undoubtedly create a lot of pain and discomfort. Which in turn, can have the opportunity for change and growth. I have had a lot of conversations recently about the new challenge, as restrictions are slowly ...lifting. People are not wanting to just jump back into their old ways. Maybe their social calendar was so busy they had no time for themselves, maybe they were spending money or energy where they shouldn’t, maybe they just haven’t been stopping to smell the roses. There has been some profound shifts created for people during the time of isolation, reconnecting with family, neighbours, hobbies and ourselves. That should not be let go of in pursuit of our old normal. If the world is happening for you and not to you, what has this time given you that you want to hold onto? Continue doing? Cultivate for your new normal? #inspiration #empowerment #coach #melbournecoach #selfcare #timeforself #goals #achievement #learning #growth #tuesdaypeople #community #mindfulness
10.01.2022 And just like that it was spring. That means we have spent two seasons in some form of isolation, distancing or lockdown in Melbourne. Although I can feel myself wanting to get out, feeling the new season making me want a change. To socialise, be outside, travel and celebrate, really anything! I still can’t help but be grateful for the lessons that this period has taught me. About self care, creating boundaries, the beauty of a collective experience and sense of connectedness.... The joy that can come from simply calling a friend and what is gained from being calm, considered and planned. Also, the deep love I have for life, friends and family. I journaled this morning, as I have each month during this period: if 2020 was a teacher, what has it taught you? What has it taught you? #mindfulness #melbournecoach #selfcare #2020 #selfcompassion #journaling

08.01.2022 #whosaidthat Friedrich Nietzsche was a philosopher, poet, cultural critic and philologist who at the age of 24 became the youngest ever to hold the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He achieved most of his great writing before the age of 44, when due to health complications he lost mental functioning. The theme of fun and playfulness has come up recently with a few of my clients and friends. The need and craving for more of it in their lif...e. Doing more things just because they enjoy it; to dance, laugh with friends, play games, rollerblade. In our search for growth, achievement and fulfilment often the need for play and pleasure can be forgotten. Play is important for stress relief, releasing endorphins, improving brain functionality and increasing creativity. As well as, increasing energy and memory. Consider in 2020 how fun and playfulness can be included in your life. #inspiration #empowerment #coach #melbournecoach #selfcare #timeforself #goals #achievement #learning #growth #femaleempowerment #selflove #tuesdaypeople #community #mindfulness
08.01.2022 I am worthy of the time and commitment to myself This was one of the reflections from a recent participant of a Mindfulness series I have been facilitating with @connecting_dotts The time for themselves was 10 minutes a day, for 10 days. That’s only 0.007% of a day or 0.021% of a work day. Yet, how often do we let that time go, putting ourselves and our needs second. It was a nice reminder for me. ... Take 10 minutes for yourself, take pause and take a breath, you are worth it. Artwork sourced at livelifehappy.com #tuesdaypeople #mindfulness #selfcare #selfcompassion #mindfulinmay

03.01.2022 Sometimes we all need a mirror to see ourselves clearly. When feeling a disconnect between a goal or a vision for yourself and what you are experiencing currently, a mirror or feedback can be an incredible way to raise the level of self awareness. I remember a coaching client of mine who had a top priority and goal around empowering her team to take ownership. After a couple of sessions I hypothesised that their might be a disconnected between her goal and what the team perc...eived and asked if I could attend a team meeting, just to observe. The leader spoke nervously at her team for 55 minutes of the 60 minute meeting and it became clear to me that her intention was getting lost. I gave her feedback and mirrored my experience, we laughed and came up with a new way to empower her team. Within 6 months she had a 2IC, could take a months leave without checking emails and her team felt engaged and empowered. It is not our fault, we can only see the world through our own eyes and perspective but having someone along side you, that you trust, can provide incredible insights to how you are seen. 01.01.2022 When looking at technology’s impact on the brain, Lila Davachi, a neuroscientist at NYU found that the butterfly effect of digital media, the short snippets and instant gratification, has an impact on cognitive functioning, especially memory. Other research at Capio Nightingale Hospital and Dr Nerina Ramlakhan has shown the constant consumption of technology can lead to burn out and sleep problems, naming it. 01.01.2022 I woke up this morning unable to sleep, my mind was racing, you know those mornings when you don’t know what day it is? Should I be working? I realised it was Sunday and decided to take myself for my hour of walking. The streets were quiet. ... And as I walked I was able to quieten the mind and bring myself into this present moment. I started to take notice of everything I could hear in this moment. Without the hum of cars on the freeway, I noticed the branches of the trees as they knocked each other in the wind, the birds greeting each other, a guy shooting hoops, my own breath behind the mask and the squeak of my shoes on the pavement. I started to take note of the beauty that was in this moment. And how fortunate I am to be experiencing it. And I noticed my mind wasn’t racing anymore. I was just present to now. Is there anything you do to help when the noise in your mind gets loud? #mindful #mindfulness #meditation #melbournecoach #selfcare #selfcompassion
