25.01.2022 Today in session 13 for the Kindergarten group of Auslan, some more complex feelings/emotions were introduced. We learned frustrated, worry, frightened and surprise one at a time, by modelling how to perform the sign and providing verbal instructions. Lauren related the handshapes to previous signs as the Wombats Kindy learners are noticing common handshapes e.g. the hook handshape is used in red, sister and worry. It was very impressive to see the children using won...derfully expressive faces as they signed today. Facial expression is an important non-manual component of Auslan. As requested by one of the Kindy children, we revised the sign for toilet. Some children find this sign funny, laughing when the word is mentioned - like many 4 and 5 year olds do! Lauren took this as an opportunity to discuss why it would be important to know this sign. She suggested that if we know the sign, we may be able to assist a Deaf person if they ask us in Auslan where is the toilet? Conversely, we would be able to ask Deaf people where the toilet is and they could help us. It is through explicit teaching like this example where Lauren can reinforce examples to the children where Deaf people are not in need of assistance. Hosting discussions like this may help to combat the implication that Deaf people are always in need of help, which is certainly not the case. To consolidate our learning of the new signs, we used them all in a version of "If Youre Happy and You Know It". We stood up and planned the actions together as a group. We came up with unique additions to the old favourite like "If youre frustrated and you know it stomp your feet" and "If youre surprised and you know it have a jump".

22.01.2022 Stories from our nursery floorbook today.

22.01.2022 We have a small group of children in our Possum learning community who are very interested in numbers as in, VERY interested in numbers. Writing them, counting as high as you can, using them in everyday scenarios, dropping them into made up songs and generally just being fans of numbers. As you would expect, they all have different levels of skills, but are united by a common interest and enjoy learning together as well as helping each other learn too. As educators who ...value allowing children to take the lead, we are responsive to this and offer opportunities that support experimentation at everyones own level. Bringing the floorbook into the playground, the educator asked the children if anyone recognised this symbol +. They all had ideas about it being an "x marks the spot" or "x for Xavier". Turning it sideways we could see how it had many similarities, but it was also very different. I told the children it was a Plus sign, and that it was used to add numbers together. Using a little box that held shells, paper numerals and symbols, the children helped to build a sum. The educator modelled how we could use the shells to represent the numbers, making little piles of shells on each side of the sum. The children were then able to count how many shells there were all together and find the corresponding number to complete the sum. Independently using the resources, the children then trialled many different number combinations. We practised moving the shells over a little bit as we counted to ensure we only counted them once each. We eventually found ourselves needing to build teen numbers as our additions grew too high. Where to next, well that will be based on this particular little group of number lovers!

21.01.2022 Spring has sprung and so will our garden with all of this care and attention.

19.01.2022 Today was especially busy up in our Wombat Kindergarten class. Our little room has been home to clouds, fires, lightning, thunder and erupting volcanoes! In between all the drama we wrote some very nice letters to Bulimba Community Kindergarten as a part of our Pen Pal project. Dr Joe Final Show- it was a beauty! We learned about the interplay of hot air and cold air in the creation of wind, the natural process behind cloud formation, and lights colour spectrum. He created our very own cloud, with a few of the children being a tad disappointed that we couldnt float on the clouds, but it was an amazing experience to touch and walk through them right inside of our classroom.

17.01.2022 Yesterday we seized the opportunity to bring out the hammers and nails for the Wombat Kindergarteners. The learning goal was to explore processes and techniques whilst using the tools. The initial task designed for today was about shapes. The learners would draw a shape of their choice, hammer some nails along the edges/ corners and then use some rubber bands to connect. As observed in all opportunities in the Kindergarten room, the childs voice is heard and trial and erro...r learning occurs. The use of intentional teaching and scaffolding during this opportunity provided our children with the time to collaborate ideas and knowledge, encouraging them to take their time to hypothesis and experiment and make connections between problem solving and what was working (Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines). We had many shapes drawn such as circles, squares and a few triangles. Some of our learners then used the nails and rubber bands to create smaller shapes inside the drawn one. As the learning progressed it changed. We began to observe some learners adding parts, trying to hold them still with one hand as they used the hammer with the other. This prompted a reflective conversation with our children about what they would like to do next time with the tools. Some ideas included building a house, a bridge, a boat, a park or even a Kindergarten. All the ideas involved building objects so thats what we will plan to do next.

17.01.2022 It is at this time of the year that we realise just how big of an impact early childhood professionals have on a family - and how big of an impact families have on us in return.

06.01.2022 This piece of documentation showcases how we use floorbooks to capture childrens work on an individual, small group and in some cases whole group level. One of the children brought in a collection of natural items to show her classmates that she had collected on a weekend bushwalk with her family. This provided the Kookaburra learners (2yrs 3yrs of age) the opportunity to investigate these little treasures, and document their thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and findings i...n the floorbook. The child who collected the items participated in the discussion as a main storyteller, sharing her experience detailing where she went, who she went with and what she found. She displayed confidence in expressing and recording her ideas and thought through the floorbook. Her voice was recorded through written language by an educator and this motivated her to document herself and mark her ideas in the floorbook. She added selected pieces from her natural collection to add to the floorbook permanently by using sticky tape. These are the beginnings of something new for the group and can go many ways. We can photograph childrens individual contributions and use these as the basis for their individual planning, we can continue to support a small group of children who remain interested in progressing this interest or we can take this somewhere with the whole group. Children may come in and out of this line of inquiry, and we may revisit often. This is expected and in line with how they learn, something we are respectful of as we allow them to take the lead.

01.01.2022 We were all surprised by our Team Wellness Ambassador today when she sprung International Cheeseburger Day on us. She had been asking general questions leading up to today to secretly gather dietary information and she hatched a plan with incredible support from Charboys Burgers who not only delivered our feast but opened early to accommodate it. Even Sandra the superchef got to sit in the staffroom and devour her food - not cooked by her for once! #bulimba #shoplocal
