25.01.2022 Two more days to take the survey (and go into a draw for $500). Survey closes Friday! Have you been renting through COVID-19? Or were renting as the health crisis began? Researchers at UNSW are running a survey and want to hear about *your experience*, especially if you have been involved in rent reduction negotiations (but all renters welcome).

23.01.2022 Excellent news : the NSW Government has committed to spending $$ on building new social housing and repairing older stock. We're keen to see more detail in the November NSW budget announcements.

23.01.2022 Media call out we’ve been contacted by a friendly journo keen to chat (TV interview) to a NSW renter who might want to talk about their experience during COVID-19: * not having enough $ left for the essentials * having their request for deferrals declined * receiving an eviction notice since the pandemic started... * needing more financial support in the long-term Comment below or DM our page if you’re interested or want to find out more.

22.01.2022 It shouldn't be a surprise (but sadly for many still is): people experiencing hard times - when given opportunity, resources, and support - know exactly how best to invest funds to rebuild their lives.

22.01.2022 We often talk about the cost of housing - how much households are paying and what they can afford. But there is a key other side to this conversation that too often is forgotten - what access to income do or should all households have to ensure they can pay for housing? Super interesting new research finds a basic income would reduce inequality. And we think, fair to say it would also likely improve access to housing.

22.01.2022 Better Rentings' new report looks at the potential build up of debt for renting households over Covid-19 and suggests a usefully provocative, and pretty straight-forward solution: Governments cancel rent debt. They do this by buying up debt for impacted tenants at a reduced value. This ensures some compensation for landlords. Then (as the creditors) they can cancel that debt for impacted tenants. Better Renting: "This is the simplest means of preventing Covid-19 evictions, ...and a needed response to an economic crisis that has put so much pressure on renting households, even as they made sacrifices in the interest of public health." What do *you* think?

21.01.2022 Vinnies NSW' Build Homes - Build Hope campaign is aiming for 10,000 signatures (real life signatures!) for their petition calling for the NSW Government to build more social housing in time for the November state budget. We'd love to see Perrottet's recent announcement about a budget commitment on social housing be a first step to meeting the campaign ask of at least 5000 new social housing homes to be built every year for the next 10 years. This wouldn't meet demand, but it... sure would get us started ... The TU has been making sure we get Vinnies our petition pages back in time. Deadline is looming, but you still have a couple of weeks if you'd like to join in. Please consider visiting the campaign website & downloading their petition and get your friends and family to sign on. Visit: https://socialjustice.vinnies.org.au//build-homes-build-h/

21.01.2022 We don't think there has been a year with so much research about renting. Come along to a free lunch time webinar this Friday at 12pm to find out more about two fascinating research projects (including our reaction to them!)

20.01.2022 Relatable, Lola Scott

20.01.2022 Just a reminder: The NSW evictions moratorium protections are extended through to 26 March 2021!! We know lots of people renting are still struggling during COVID-19. For lots of info on the protections and supports take a look at our COVID-19 renting guide here: tenants.org.au/covid19/guide

17.01.2022 During NAIDOC week it is timely to have reread of this article. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people made up 26 per cent of specialist homelessness servi...ces clients in 2018-19 yet only 3.2 per cent of the Australian population in the same year, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. There are just four Aboriginal-led homelessness organisations despite making up almost one-third of clients, after 2014 reforms that reduced the number of Aboriginal-controlled organisations. 16.01.2022 Really providing housing for everyone who needs it is about political will. Kate Colvin, Council to Homeless Persons: "$11 billion a year goes into government subsidies to investors in the forms of capital gains tax exemptions and negative gearing. $11 billion a year. I am saying it would take $6 billion over a number of years to provide the social housing that we need."

16.01.2022 Former property manager Toni Gereige from Strathfield Partners (Real Estate Agency) has been convicted of fraudulently claiming rental bonds and trust account m...oney totalling nearly $150k. Mr Gereige was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment to be served by way of Intensive Correction Order and must also complete 120 hours community service. Mr Gereige has a right of appeal. See more

15.01.2022 "Homelessness doesn't happen to a certain kind of person. Many are just on the wrong side of Australia's housing boom, born without a social safety net or priced out of increasingly competitive rental markets." The solution to homelessness is pretty straightforward really: it's housing. Housing that is affordable. Hmmmm, for example, social housing?

15.01.2022 Last week, the Tenants' Union joined 91 other organisations signing on to a joint statement opposing One Nation's - ( ) . The Bill would allow people and organisations to use religion as an excuse to hurt, exclude and demean people - including when providing housing. Riley from the TU here unpacks some of the ways in which this Bill could harm renters in NSW.

13.01.2022 This looks super interesting. And episode 1 looks to be on point, given the recent NSW budget announcement about accelerating state projects involving 'renewal of public housing estates'.

12.01.2022 Want to know what rents have been doing in your suburb? In your local area? We've just updated our rent tracker tool (with data about bonds lodged through until the end of September). Go take a look.

11.01.2022 15,000 renters across Australia surveyed. The first thing that really struck me is the absolute scale of the effect of COVID and how it has affected people's lives," Emma Baker, professor of housing research at the University of Adelaide, said.

11.01.2022 New report from Equity Economics predicts a wave of disadvantage unless Govt steps in to intervene and support those struggling. This looks like an extra 9,000 people facing homelessness across NSW - that’s an increase of 24% across NSW, with regional NSW hardest hit - with an increase of up to 40%. We support calls for an urgent investment in social housing and frontline services. 04.01.2022 We said it in March and April and May and June and July... and in August we gave it a rest in Sept... syke! no we didn't and in October and in November (Emerald over at Twitter is being sarcastic. Like tens of thousands of renters across Australia, she always knew deferrals were going to be bad!) Quote Tweet Emerald's original tweet here: twitter.com/emeraldxmoon/status/1331372004889358336

03.01.2022 While so many of us have our attention turned that way, another story coming out of the US (not election focussed folks!)

02.01.2022 In the lead up to the NSW state budget next Tuesday Robert from the Tenants' Union makes the case for lowering the age of older renters receiving priority housing assistance from 80 to 55.
