10.01.2022 I have waited and watched my newsfeed blow up into a long list of angry posts regarding the premiers comments yesterday regarding Dance Teachers in the Private ...Sector... I did not see the live announcement but I have watched the re-play many times... And I’m glad I waited and let it all sink in, I’m glad I waited and tried my hardest to look at the big picture... Firstly, I have been teaching for 21years (running my own studio for 19 of them) I hold qualifications through 3 different Dance associations as well as a Cert IV in Dance teaching and management / Training & Assessment and have all but completed a degree in psychology. I have years of experience and now examine & train teachers myself. I DO feel I have EVERY right to offended by the premiers very flipent remarks....., and a younger more hot headed version of myself probably would have flown off the handle strait away..... but I’m don’t feel this is needed right now.... some times you just have to look at things from another persons perspective, understand that people make lots of mistakes everyday & take in the big picture! I believe she was under pressure, under prepared & uneducated about the arts industry not knowing how it all works. We as an industry also don’t have an official governing body to moderate, guide, rule over or advocate for us that is directly connected to the government like other industries. There ARE studio owners and dance teachers out there that are NOT formally qualified in DANCE specifically, not insured, licensed or have the adequate knowledge and training that they should! There is no one checking up on these people and a lot of the time our clients (dance parents) don’t know the difference between a qualified and unqualified teacher. They see fun and affordable classes at a time that suits their family schedule.... (so if parents don’t see the Forrest for the trees then it’s kind of understandable that the premier may have jumped to the same conclusion- voicing it in front of the entire nation though, may not have been such a great idea) Fortunately, for every dodgy dance studio, there are a million wonderful studios doing the right thing with studio owners and leading teachers who are infact OVER qualified in their positions! No it isn’t fair that Gladys painted us all with the same brush! I know that! And I could say a few things about certain questionable school teachers I’ve come across over the years too, but I won’t.... I know the world is in a crisis, I am aware that we are living through something that is very new and scary to EVERYONE. We are all eager to get back to what we consider Normal. I especially am holding my breath to get back into my studio with all my favorite kids. I miss them more than words can say and I miss doing what I love I believe with the up- raw caused by yesterday’s thoughtless comments by the premier - she might gain herself a little education about how private dance studios and similar businesses operate and with any luck she will announce a date soon. In the mean time, it is my opinion that we should all be patient and trust that the longer we wait the safer it will be for everyone. Let this be a lesson to not only Gladys, but everyone during these very fast moving and stressful times to think before we speak. A simple this is something we will certainly look into in the near future would have sufficed yesterday instead of making derogatory, incorrect and offensive (for some) comments when being questioned by the journalists. Wishing all my DSO friends peace and nothing but success once we get a chance to reopen our doors
