15.01.2022 Stephen is happy with the 2 Juvenile Eastern Long necks that were rehomed today to live in his outside pond. The turtles were unwanted pets that came to Turtle Town a few months back & this is the first time that have lived in an outside environment. We advised Stephen with the best way to provide them with an escape proof set up & we provided the floating dock too. It’s great to see turtles going to good homes.

04.01.2022 TURTLE TIP OF THE DAY (Courtesy of Kev McKay): Salt. Many people often ask, "Do I really need to use salt in my turtle tank"? The answer is "YES". Even though ...they're called "Freshwater Turtles", all natural streams, lakes and rivers contain salt (be it barely detectable, it's still present nonetheless) as it's a naturally occurring mineral in the earth. Salt should be used in your turtle tank at the rate of 4-5g/litre of water. This works out to be 0.4-0.5% (for example - if you have a tank that holds 250 litres of water, you need to use anywhere between 1,000 - 1,250g of salt). Sea water in comparison is about 30g/litre. What type of salt should you use? Nothing that's been processed for human consumption like Table Salt that contains anti-caking agent (554). Ideally you should use AFT Turtle Salts, however, any salt in its raw form like pure evaporated sea/rock salt crystals available at any supermarket or pool salt in also fine. Salt when added to your turtle tank at the recommended rate is beneficial for several reasons as it adds vital trace elements, neutralizes harmful bacteria that accumulate in any aquarium environment, drastically reduces the chance of your turtle getting skin infections and helps to disinfect and heal minor cuts and scratches. *IMPORTANT TIP TO REMEMBER* Salt does NOT evaporate with water, so when topping up your aquarium due to evaporation, you need NOT add more salt, only add salt after you do a water change. Also, never add salt to your tank without first removing your turtle and waiting for it to completely dissolve. This only takes 5-10 minutes. Salt should never be used in a tank containing cloaca breathing species such as Fitzroy River Turtles. See more
