25.01.2022 A simple way to support your child’s reading, writing, mathematic, problem solving, growth mindset development: Think out loud. Model your thinking process so children can hear (because they’re always listening!) how we think, how we calculate, how we problem solve, and that we also make mistakes and can correct them. Thinking out loud is a helpful tool and if we model that, children will feel more confident in working out their problems out loud, particularly with math.

24.01.2022 I am absolutely loving all the authors and actors reading books to children! What’s your favourite so far? Zog is one of our favourite books, and my Harry Potter heart loves Eddie Redmayne.

24.01.2022 Things have been really quiet here for me in regards to tutoring as we roll with the current restrictions and circumstances. School at home is a new experience for most of us, myself included, and I’ve been hesitant to say too much in regards to tutoring in this current space. A recent increase in tutors advertising and parent enquires through pages I run has spurred me to take stock of my thoughts and share them with anyone following this page, but particularly with those ...who may be coming to this page looking for a tutor right now. I’d like to preface my sharing by first saying how much I admire and respect teachers, parents, and above all the children right now; navigating this new and challenging experience together. I have been privileged to support students over extended periods of time, I feel like many of you are part of the family, and I will always be simply a phone call, text, email away if any of my current or past students, or their parent/s, need support in this time. So to the point: I am considering this time as a winter season. The seeds of our childrens’ learning have been planted lovingly by their teachers earlier this year, and previously. Those seeds are being nurtured under warm soil right now: family connection, love, stability. A little sun and rain trickles through the soil to those seeds: school at home activities, social connection via online platforms with classes and friends. It is in this winter that we may begin to worry about the growth of those seeds, the growth of our childrens’ academic development. But deep within the warm earth roots are growing, readying, preparing. When spring returns, under the sunshine, rain, the tender nurturing of their teacher physically in the classroom, those little seeds will spring to life with vivacious energy. And so my long winded analogy comes to this: as a very broad, general level of advice, I’d strongly recommend waiting until the spring (quite literally, to be honest) to begin with a tutor. Fill your time with love, play, nature wherever possible. If you wish to support your child’s learning in this time think about tending to that warm, protective soil: read to/with them rich, beautiful stories purely for pleasure, create stories as you go on your daily walk, play board games and cook, garden, knit, craft, draw. Learning happens in the everyday moments. Of course this is my general opinion, and everyone’s personal circumstances and needs differ at all times and especially now. Trust in your knowledge of your child and follow your instinct where it leads you. Just my reflections at this time.

24.01.2022 Something valuable to remember during our current unknown and challenging times.

20.01.2022 In this uncertain time, I’d continue to echo earlier posts and the wise words of my son’s teacher: We have 4 extra days of school holidays (here in Victoria). Now is the time to settle in to our home rhythms, isolate ourselves from the growing anxiety in our adult worlds, connect to our children and our friends both in our homes and via the technology gratefully in our hands. If you wish to support your child’s continued academic development at this time, READ TO and WITH THEM! And, as an added bonus, the beloved Alison Lester is reading to us all too!

15.01.2022 Shared from Maths Australia. Math is a language. When we strip math back to basics and listen as we speak problems out loud, this language becomes easier to hear.

09.01.2022 A really important reminder for us as parents right now supporting our children’s learning in ways many of us haven’t before.

02.01.2022 As we head into early school holidays, I’d encourage all of us (myself included) to take these extra 4 days as school holiday days and allow ourselves and our children to all breathe out, connect with each other, and relax into a simple daily rhythm together in our homes. I will be closed this week and the school holidays. As we get closer to the end of the school holidays, if school doesn’t return as planned I will begin to think about what I can offer existing students who wish to continue our tutoring.
