22.01.2022 Feral deer numbers are building around us compared with 4 years ago. Tweed Shire Council and Tweed Landcare are working with our Landcare and Council partners across the region to keep feral deer out of the Northern Rivers!! Stay tuned for new announcements about this challenging, yet exciting project. Please report any deer sightings in the Tweed and surrounding shires (with a photo if possible) to https://www.feralscan.org.au/deerscan/ We are going to need a lot of help from the community if we are to stop them from establishing here.

20.01.2022 A member of the public found this little White-throated Nightjar on the ground while she was out walking at Suffolk Park. Assuming it had fallen from a nest she... rescued the little chick and called Wires. Little did she know that these elusive birds do not make nests, instead they lay their single egg directly onto the ground in the leaf litter or among stones. Both male and female incubate the egg and together raise their chick. The chick is precocial, meaning it is mobile from the day it hatches from the egg, and at 30 days old it is capable of flight. Its plumage enables it to blend in with leaves and twigs as it rests on the ground during the day. They are nocturnal and hunt for moths and insects mainly at night. The little bird was picked up by WIRES volunteer Annie, and shortly after delivered to WIRES avian carer Deborah. After being hydrated it was checked out by a vet, the prognosis came back that she was a healthy little bird. The priority was to reunite Ruby (as she had been named) with her parents as soon as possible but storms predicted for the first night prevented that happening. Yet another storm the following afternoon looked like it may again prevent the little Nightjar from returning to her parents, but by dusk the weather had settled and Deborah returned to the exact location where Ruby had been found, it was a beautiful forested area. On arrival Deborah heard the adult birds calling, little Ruby instantly returned their call. Deborah placed Ruby on the ground and walked away allowing the parent birds to come and collect their little fledgling.

10.01.2022 Over the last few months Tweed Landcare and Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers have been working with two landholders to restore the bush and provide habitat for wildlife on their fire impacted properties at Terragon, near Uki. Within the last two days a significant component of the project has been completed with the installation of 12 carved hollow log homes and 20 nest boxes. These wildlife homes will supplement the habitat lost during the fire and greatly support wildlife retur...n. A nest box is an enclosure built especially for animals to nest, raise their young, roost or shelter in. It mimics natural hollows and provides wildlife with a comfortable and safe place to rest in and raise their young. Many of our native animals need hollow homes. The boxes installed are for a range of native wildlife that are known in live in the area and need hollow logs to live in like: kookaburras, gliders, possums, owls and parrots. We will be monitoring the nest boxes for activity using a specially designed nest box camera and red- light spotlight surveys at night for nocturnal animals. Evidence such as scats, pellets, tracks and wildlife calls will also be used to determine the nocturnal and arboreal species on the property. Arboreal species are creatures who spend the majority of their lives in trees. This project is supported by WIRES Landcare Wildlife Relief Recovery Grants Program , Landcare Australia Large Grants Program 2020 and the Stone & Wood Brewing inGrained Foundation. Thank you Habi-Tec for the installation of carved hollows and nest boxes! See more
