25.01.2022 Powerful and passionate messages were a feature of the 2020 Youth Poetry Slam, hosted by Poets Out Loud and supported by Tweed Shire Council. After careful deliberation, Pancho Symes, 18 was named the winner with his poem about the sadness of conformity.... St Joseph’s College Banora Point student Georgia Smith, 16, placed second with a poem covering the painful subject of abusive relationships. Kingscliff High School First Nations poet Jasmine Logan, 14 placed third with her piece on Black Lives Matter. Voting remains open until the end of November for the People’s Choice Award so check out the entries and place your vote! Visit https://poetsoutloud.org/youth/

24.01.2022 Uki residents are asked to use water only for drinking and essential needs as Council continues tankering drinking water supplies to the village. Last night’s heavy rain again cut power to the pumps that draw raw water from the river into the treatment plant. While power is back up - we can't switch on the plant yet because there is too much dirt and debris in the floodwaters to allow it to be treated to the standard required.... Council can only cart enough water to supply drinking water and essential needs. More here tweed.nsw.gov.au/MediaReleases/2913

17.01.2022 All this rain has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Council is calling on residents to help us Tackle Mosquitoes Together! Tackling Mosquitos Together, a program undertaken by councils in the Northern Rivers, aims to reduce the impact of mosquitoes in the community. Here's some tips you can follow in your house and backyard to reduce mosquito numbers:... Keep yards well-maintained, mow lawns regularly, and limit areas of dense vegetation. Cover windows, doors, chimneys, vents and other entrances with insect screens that are in good condition. Remove all water-holding containers and rubbish, keep house gutters clean and properly aligned. Empty and refill pet water bowls and bird baths at least weekly. Ensure all openings to water tanks and septic tanks are screened securely. Place sand or fine gravel in pot plant trays, or flush them out weekly. Keep ornamental ponds stocked with native fish species that will feed on larvae. We will continue to carry out mosquito larvae control works in key breeding areas by air and through ground works, but we need your help with the above For more information, visit tweed.nsw.gov.au/NuisanceInsects

11.01.2022 There is a silver lining to our latest weather event...we've lifted water restrictions in Tyalgum! Restrictions that were in place from 6 December due to dry conditions, and although recent heavy rainfall meant the river and Tyalgum Weir were fully recharged, restrictions were kept on because the floodwaters were so dirty and debris-filled. Good news for Uki residents too! The Uki water treatment plant is up and running again after it was flooded not once, but twice in this latest rain event, that saw water recede, then rise again two nights later.
