Would you prefer 3 vases from Kmart that will chip (and look outdated) within 6 months OR 1 handmade vase from a local ceramist (like the above pieces by @misswillowdesigns) that will look for years? The first 3 may cost you only $21 while the latter might cost $50+ but will satisfy you for much longer. The better quality item will inevitably save you heaps on the long term. Plus, buying... from a local creative will directly impact them, instead of feeding multinational companies that thrive on Made In China sales... #WinWin Buy preloved. You all know Im a huge #FacebookMarketplace lover. Sourcing your homewares from there, Gumtree, car boot sales, local Buy & Sell pages, antique stores or vintage curators like @thepickerconcept is a wonderful way to give into your styling cravings without spending more than necessary AND reducing landfill in the process (and not adding to it either) #AnotherWin Stop falling prey to marketing. Seriously. There is a huge difference between Want and Need. Marketers are trying to tell you there is none. And there is a massive difference between: Oh, I really love this and oh this looks cute on this pic/display, I need it in my life (tip: when you start using need to describe your desire for a piece of homewares, it usually means you really dont...) Be realistic about your home (what is really missing, if anything) and with yourself (is this piece genuinely resonating with you?) and only buy what aligns with both your home and yourself. Homewares can be gorgeous/fun/interesting/elegant items that will finish off a home like the cherry on top of a cake. 24.01.2022 DJILBA - The Nyoongar season Djilba runs from August to September, and sees the wonderful colour explosion of wildflower blooming in our region: yellows (wattle everywhere!), cream and striking blue. Traditionally, it is a season of conception and transition, where clear cold days alternate with warmer, windy days. Kangaroos are having babies, magpies and willy wag tails are still in their nest, caring for their about-to-hatch little ones. It is a season where nature feels ...alive and strong. 23.01.2022 I love my Perth life, and I am forever grateful for living in Australia. But today I miss the gentle morning sun of a Provençal summer. I miss opening the shutters and hearing peoples footsteps and smelling fresh baked bread. I miss looking up and discovering a hidden sculpture, a rooftop terrace bursting with potted oleanders and olive trees. I miss the colours: lavender blue, terracotta red, rust, sunflower yellow, olive green, and the quietness of limestone homes. I miss ...patting the cats that wander around and that nobody knows who they actually belong to. I miss the sound of the church bells, which remind me, every fifteen minutes, that, despite what it looks like, time is not still, that it still goes by ,and if I dont hurry, there will be no more tomatoes left at my favorite market stand, and that I will be late for work. 22.01.2022 One of the things I love most about being a designer is that I never know who I am to meet and where I am to go. One of yesterday’s consults took me to a lovely Hills home with this amazing garden. Think over 3,000m2 of cottage plants within bushland, with giant gumtrees in the background, and a series of tableaux (perfectly imperfect mini gardens within the garden) that you discover as you walk through. There was really something special about this place, which has been entirely created and cared for by the owner. I always feel so grateful that people open their doors to me with such generosity. 20.01.2022 Her name was Meryl. Pauline Daniel Photographe Culinaire and I were doing our Jukurrpa documentary, travelling around rural and urban Australia to meet Aboriginal people from all backgrounds and to take note of their struggles and their dreams. We were just walking out of the gym and going around The Block, greeted by dozens of kids and adults who came to us intrigued by our photography equipment and our French accents. Everyone wanted to have their photo taken or have a cha...t. "No camera ever comes here unless something bad happened and there's the Police", we were told. Meryl was sitting quietly on her doorstep on Eveleigh Street. She looked graceful and elegant, despite being behind a security screen that reminded us of a prison door. We exchanged a few words. She said she always dreamed of going to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, and of going back to her land too, where she's been taken from as a youngster. She had pain in her eyes, and a toothless smile. We fell quiet. This was 17 years ago. Since, the Block has been knocked down and Redfern has become one of Australia's most gentrified suburbs. I am not sure where Meryl and the others have been relocated to, once again taken away from what they called home. As a nation, Australia has started to change too, making some tiny steps towards reconciliation. We have a long journey ahead. We need to fully embrace our history as a whole, not just the good parts. We need to accept our national trauma if we want to heal. We need to look backwards and make peace with it, to move forward. We need to make sure that, as a society, we give equal chances to all, without prejudices. And we need to trust Aboriginal people that they are entirely capable of being successful, happy, healthy people, by themselves, for themselves. Because not only they can, but also because, at the end of the day, Australia always was and always will be Aboriginal. 16.01.2022 Wash Hang Fold Repeat - please tell me Im not the only one whose weekends march to the rhythm of domestic chores! If only my laundry was half as pretty and functional as the #GlenForrestHome one! Its a fairly compact space but we managed to put heaps of storage and separate toilets without altering a lot of the original structure. Not pictured is the original red brick wall that we decided to leave as is, just because red brick wall + white timber ceiling = pure love. The splashback - brick shaped, hand made, white glazed ceramic - mirrors the brick wall and is brilliantly simple and just perfect for this space. Ah... 15.01.2022 I want to use these tiles that my husband saved from a construction job in the 80s for our mudroom/laundry in Bridgetown YES!!!!!! I love it when clients have great ideas (and taste) and are confident about their homes. This particular home, I have very little input on. My gorgeous clients is putting all the hard work and creative vision. I just give my opinion and tweak her ideas a tiny bit. It is a real joy to be involved in this home, as it is one that is gently put together with lots of care, time and genuine love - and a healthy dose of common sense.

14.01.2022 Working internationally when the world is in lockdown? No problem! Isnt it amazing what technology enables us to do? Ive recently worked on a apartement bourgeois (think light woodfloors, high ceilings, heaps of windows, fancy cornices and rosaces, fireplaces with pink marble mantel, etc) in France, which has beautiful bones but a very outdated-dusty style right now. The new owner is pretty limited in what he can do as most tradies are not working and stores are closed in France, so were mostly focusing on redesigning the space through colours, patterns (wallpaper) and texture. Textiles will be purchased online, and furniture and decorative items will be second-hand, sourced on the French equivalent of Gumtree. 10.01.2022 Its been almost 10 years since we renovated this tiny bathroom in the little Guildford cottage we rented then. We did it on a shoestring (the tiny space helped keeping the budget low), and I aimed for a design that would be practical and timeless. Would I change anything now? Id probably put cuter tapware, an old timber framed mirror and a small Kilim rug. But to be honest, I still like this bathroom as much as I did 9 years ago. 10.01.2022 CONUNDRUM - For my #ArlesApartment, should I go with terracotta square zelliges? Or dark green rectangular ones? I love both. Both are trendy though, and I am usually not a huge supporter of buying things when they're hot, as we're more likely to get sick of them quickly.... That said, I always had a super soft spot for terracotta, and zelliges have been used for centuries in the Mediterranean where my apartment is, so it's not like it's a new fad for me or there. I am not a... massive fan of the square shape though, but, on the plus side, it's timeless... But look at that dark green - isn't it smooth? Green is also present in my apartment (it's one of the shade of the encaustic tiles in my bedroom) and on various elements of the building (such as the balustrade of my balcony) See where I'm coming from? 06.01.2022 Hows that for an outdoor bath at the Bridgetown house? Weve had this claw foot bath, that G. pulled out of a job, since the 1980s. Back in those days there were not all the bath refinishing products around like now and we didnt have the money to blow on having it done so G. gave it to his dad. Dad used it as a worm farm for many years and Ive finally got my bath back to use for outdoor bathing. Came up very well after a clean and look forward to using it when the weat...her warms up a bit. I used a tree that fell down during a storm for the wooden paving blocks. This is what happens when you have long term vision. And a pretty good sense of style. And heaps of patience. And are not afraid of recycling, transforming and embracing the fact that things can have several lives.
