25.01.2022 After working for several weeks on silent letters, today we spent some time reading a decodable text and identifying the silent letters with markers. This was a great review exercise for the student and it gave me an opportunity to assess the information they have retained.

24.01.2022 For the past few weeks have been working through silent letters with a student. Today we had an opportunity to put that knowledge to the test with a board game from The Literacy Nest that incorporated words containing silent letters. We read the cards and wrote the words on the whiteboard identifying the silent letter.

15.01.2022 One thing l really enjoy when working with students is exploring ways to address error correction. Today l had a student spell ‘quickly’ with the initial blend of ‘cw.’ This is definitely nothing new to practitioners working with dyslexic children but it does provide a great opportunity to examine possible initial blend combinations as well as the actual sound of the letter Q. All of this makes for great review and helps children to gain a better understanding of the English language.

14.01.2022 This morning l had a very productive session with a Yr 5 student. We reviewed the 6 syllable types, their definition and then placed example words in the appropriate category.

07.01.2022 Tonight l have helped a Yr 12 student write her ‘Impact through Adversity’ statement for university entrance. With her permission, l am adding it here for you to read. I am so proud of this student as l have watched her work so hard over the years to complete homework and assessment tasks, struggling to read complex concepts, spell and compose thoughts on paper. Throughout my entire schooling life, l have been greatly challenged in the classroom due to finally being diagnos...ed with dyslexia at the age of 10. It has impacted my learning; however, l have found a way past this challenging wall. This includes spending extra time outside of school to focus on my studies and fully grasp new concepts, using technology to assist my learning and finding other pathways. Although l am greatly disadvantaged within the schooling system, l acknowledge the areas where l am talented, using them to help me get where l am today. I have continued to try my hardest throughout school, staying on top of my workload and balancing a normal life. However, l know that my best will compare differently to my classmates’ scores. As l helped her to edit this, l couldn’t help but cry as it is what l see on a daily basis with the children l work with. See more
