24.01.2022 Get around it!!
23.01.2022 We think its important to connect with the flora and fauna we are all trying to protect so lets meet some of the birds of Bayside! To get us started, heres a female Rainbow Lorikeet slurping up some Corymbia nectar in Peace Park, Hampton. In a large flock of squawkers you can tell apart the males and females from the colour of their chests. Males have a bright red chest while the females have a mottled orange colour.
22.01.2022 This years devastating bushfires have showcased first hand why we need to begin acting immediately on this climate crisis. The film 2040 adopts a narrative built off hope and inspiration to put forward a number of already-made solutions that we can use to to combat some of the environmental issues we face today. In partnership with the Elsternwick Park Association, The Wilderness Society Bayside will be hosting a moonlight screening of the film on the 29th of February at the... Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve. Doors will open at 6:30pm with the film to commence at 8:15pm. Concluding the screening, the films director Damon Gameau (who also directed That Sugar Film) will have a 30 minute Q&A answering questions about the documentary and giving an insight into his philosophy and vision for the future. The screening will be entirely human powered, with four bikes generating the electricity needed for the movie to show. We hope this event will help to inspire and equip bayside (and the wider) community to continue to have engaging conversations about why climate change is an issue they demand more action on. Come and enjoy a family friendly event with engaging conversation about a better future for all of us. https://www.facebook.com/events/163777874920012/
22.01.2022 Dont forget to get your tickets! With a Q&A from 2040 Director Damon Gameau and a dreamy location, this moonlight screening is a night not to miss! Bring a picnic and a rug or chair and get ready to be inspired to make positive change. To get your tickets, head to:... events.humanitix.com.au/2040-elsternwick-park *Please note that alcohol will be served but BYO is not permitted

Unfortunately at this stage it wont be operational until 2023 but we understand that change takes time and this a great step forward! You can follow Cash for Containers Victoria for more information and updates on details to come

16.01.2022 Remember when we could have outdoor gatherings of more than 5 people? We are reminiscing about February this year, when we hosted a moonlight screening of 2040:... The Regeneration in Elsternwick Park Nature Reserve. Over 400 people came and the director, Damon Gameau, joined us for a Q&A. Great film, great night. In the not too distant future, lets do it again! See more
13.01.2022 If youre as concerned as us about the recent extreme weather events, then you might be wondering what you can do about it... Anna Richards is spreading hope to Australians with some insightful and impactful suggestions. Heres a video she posted outlying the importance of writing to your local federal member (for us its Tim Wilson). We highly reccomend giving this video a watch!
13.01.2022 Check out Ruby, Ash and Chris! Three of our core members representing us on the local Bayside mag!
13.01.2022 Great work Bunnings Warehouse Australia!
13.01.2022 Keep an eye on your letter boxes! This year Bayside council elections will be conducted via postal vote. Expect them between the 6-8th of October. Stay tuned for a walk through of the process
12.01.2022 Have your say this week on something that will positively impact Baysides action on Climate Change! The Bayside Council has created a survey that is easy to fill out and to share your thoughts on the Climate Emergency Action Plan Draft. Make your voice heard and help our community take positive action towards the future of Bayside. Watch our video of Jess for some great information on the process.... The council is seeking community feedback on the draft plan until Sunday the 26th of July at 5pm. Have a read of the draft here: https://yoursay.bayside.vic.gov.au/climate-emergency-action AND most importantly - let the council know what your feedback is for the plan by following this link to complete their short survey: https://yoursay.bayside.vic.gov.au/climate-em/have-your-say
10.01.2022 One positive thing to come out of COVID-19 is that people are taking more notice of the wildlife around them. Were lucky in Bayside to have beautiful birds in our backyards like these amazing Currawongs (not to be confused with magpies or ravens) with their bright yellow eyes
10.01.2022 On Wednesday it was Earth day, which marks 50 years since 20 million Americans took to the streets to peacefully demonstrate for environmental reform. In 1990, Earth day went global, and today Earth day is observed in 193 countries with 1 billion people celebrating it every year. It is a day of action to change human behaviour and create local, national and global policy changes. This year, we are limited in the actions we can take but there is something you can do from home!... The due date for submissions into the review of the EPBC Act has been extended to May 1st. There is no better way to protect our beautiful planet than to take this opportunity to have your say about how our environmental laws will protect her moving into the future The Wilderness Society has provided this great guide to writing a submission: https://bit.ly/2wK6wp8 AND this is a link to some of our submissions if youre looking for some inspiration: https://docs.google.com//1zlNqzXwwg5t0lerHCSRF9KeS_F/edit We hope you are all staying safe, TWSB
08.01.2022 After declaring a climate emergency, Bayside City Council wants to hear from YOU! Let the council know which areas you think they should focus on in their climate emergency action plan by following this link: https://yoursay.bayside.vic.gov.au/climate-emergency-action
08.01.2022 From everyone at the TWSB team, we wholeheartedly hope youre staying safe in these testing times If you have some spare time up your sleeve, and are wanting to use some of that time to help create positive environmental change then this post is for you Read time: 2 minutes. The EPBC Act is the strongest federal environmental law in Australia, and its reviewed once a decade. The review provides a chance for anybody thats interested to make a submission and communicate ...to the government their concerns about climate change and environmental degradation and why you think stronger environmental laws are needed After the catastrophic summer of bushfires, we dont have to cast our minds too far back to realise why its so important that the Government hears the call for nature laws that work. Research (and the film 2040: The Regeneration ) has shown that engagement with emotional stories are far more effective motivators of pro-environmental behaviour than fact loaded and info heavy papers. Submissions illustrating your connection to nature are more powerful than listing facts. The Review needs to see how much Australians care about our natural world and the impact it has on us when it is damaged. We sincerely hope that you will join us in writing a short (minimum 300 word) submission outlining your love and concerns for nature. Together we can determine whether or not stronger laws are enforced. Your submission doesnt have to be a perfected work of art, you are an expert in your own experience and your lived experiences can speak volumes for the cause . Hot tip Aim for progress over perfection. Our big sis The Wilderness Society has provided this awesome guide on submission writing, check it out https://bit.ly/2wK6wp8 Deadline for submissions: close of business, Friday 17th April.
07.01.2022 Today is Threatened Species Day - a day to remember the extinction crisis we are facing and the beautiful species that need our help. Every year the Threatened Species Commissioner hosts the #TSBakeOff to raise awareness about our threatened species. This year we made a Grey-Headed Flying Fox! These guys breed near Yarra Bend and are believed to be one single colony that travels along the east coast throughout the year. Unfortunately, they are listed as vulnerable due to ha...bitat clearing and land degradation. So what can you do to help? Doug Gimesy Photography, a local conservation and wildlife journalist has captured them beautifully and provides a great summary here: http://gimesy.com/melbournes-flying-night-gardeners/ A dreamtime story of the Yuin People of Wallaga Lake tells of a flying fox who thinks he is a bird, so the great spirit hangs him upside down to teach him that he is a bat and not a bird.
06.01.2022 One of the most significant ways we can individually take action on climate change is by writing a letter to our local federal member of parliament (MP) demanding more action be taken from government (template via the link below if you dont have time to write one). Whys it important we do this? The role of your federal MP is to listen to what the community is saying and to represent them in parliament. If we dont communicate this, the majority wont be represented, our voi...ce wont be heard and no action will be taken. Easy right? So who is Baysides federal MP? Mr Tim Wilson (http://bit.ly/2HfKJqZ). From a grass roots level we have a real opportunity to influence the legislative change we want to see. Its time that the government acknowledges that we want to adopt renewable energy sources and immediately begin reducing our net carbon emissions If you dont have time to write your own letter, click this link for a template http://bit.ly/2w0v1NU. *The above letter was written by Anna Rose Richards. Watch her explain all of the above in this video https://www.instagram.com/p/B6z-tNJjIRf/.
06.01.2022 Another bird of Bayside, the magpie-lark, not to be confused with the Australian magpie! These guys use plant fibres and mud to build these amazing nests and then make them cosy with grass, feathers and fur. While they may be common, they usually mate for life and stay in the same area if they can, so why not get to know your local couple?
05.01.2022 On Feb 29th 2020, The Wilderness Society Bayside and The Elsternwick Park Association co-hosted a pedal powered screening of the documentary 2040, including a Q&A with the films director Damon Gameau. The aim of the event was to empower Bayside (and the wider community) to act on climate change by showcasing a number of solutions that already exist today. The solutions the film puts forward present a great entry point for anybody that may be feeling overwhelmed by the co...mplexity of the issues we face. Thank you to the 500 people who bought a ticket, we hope you had a great night and left feeling inspired as ever. We were blown away by everyones desire to learn more about the role they can play in helping our planet! Photos by www.dapplegroup.com #jointheregeneration #climateaction

02.01.2022 At TWS Bayside were trying to keep positive during this hard time! Stay safe out there everyone and remember this social distancing wont last forever. Lets keep thinking about the environment and be ready to hit the ground running when things are back to normal again
01.01.2022 We wanted to hear from the Bayside community during our launch party about your environmental concerns and suggestions. We received 15 suggestions and are looking forward to discussing and establishing our next set of goals!
01.01.2022 What an awesome event on Sunday! Over 100 people came down to the Brighton Beach Bowls Club to chat about the environment and see how they could get involved. There was so much love that the National TWS media team shared it! Thanks for an awesome event everyone! TWS Bayside
01.01.2022 Appreciating our access to beautiful Bayside beaches on these hot summer days!! Dont forget to be sun-smart out there. Did you know you can be environmentally sun-smart too? Unfortunately, not all sunscreens are environmentally friendly... Most sunscreens contain microplastics but there are some that dont! Our favorite is Sunbutter but you can head to www.beatthemicrobead.org/plastic-free-suncreens/ to discover more.
