25.01.2022 Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley has delayed her final decision on whether to save 50 hectares of core koala habitat at Brandy Hill in NSW until October 13th. The Minister has deferred her decision until October 13, giving us a short window of time to show her the community wants her to save this koala forest and protect NSW koalas from extinction. Please send her an email using the link below.

25.01.2022 John Barilaro and his anti-environment National Party MPs have been trying for years to make it harder to protect koala habitat on private land. Now they have a... bill before parliament that does just that. We need to make sure that as many people as possible know that this bill will make things worse for koalas, not better. Please share now, and use this link to tell MPs to kill the bill that will kill koalas: https://www.catefaehrmann.org/save_our_koalas_kill_the_bill

23.01.2022 The Daily Telegraph reports new laws to protect koalas are contentious and confusing, and implies there is something incredulous about the co-existence of koala...s and suburbia. Well, here is the reality I saw today. In St Helens Park, in the edge bushland along Spring Creek, just beyond the colourbond fences of homes, I saw 3 dozing koalas, not even disturbed by the furiously barking neighbourhood dogs. Keeping koalas here only requires a few reasonable human compromises, pet control that keeps pets safe too, traffic calming to avoid koala and human roadkill, and configuring any new development around koala bushland. No big deal in my opinion! In every human landscape there needs to be space kept for nature, bushland cools the climate and filters air and water. Co-incidentally what keeps koalas safe, keeps people healthy. Rob Stokes and Gladys Berejiklian stand your ground. Liberal backbenchers at the urban fringe who are ‘concerned’ are driven by developers who want to maximise economic returns, by clearfelling and bulldozing, without caring that the consequence will be unliveable suburban slums. As for the National Party, they represent industrial scale forestry clearfelling that results primarily in low value wood chips and building pallets. Their other best buddies are the huge scale agribusiness keen to obliterate, laser level and irrigate to every horizon. When the countryside has as a consequence no trees, no koalas and no water left for rivers, it won’t be sustaining human life and productivity either. Oh, by the way, thanks Geoff Francis, Patricia Durman and Barry Durman you are awesome Koala Whisperers!

19.01.2022 The EPBC amendment bill has been unexpectedly sent to a Senate Inquiry. The Gov't has cut the inquiry timeframe to a *ridiculous* two weeks - they want to rush this bill through and get it passed by Parliament before Christmas. What's even more ridiculous is public submissions need to be in by COB Wednesday 18 November. If you want to put a submission in, we've set up up a easy email action to help you do that - you can find the link here if you'd like to send an email to th...e Senate Committee: https://wilderness.good.do/48hourstogetloud/epbcinquiry/

18.01.2022 Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Australia needs ecologically-sustainable development to deliver long-term economic growth, environmental improvement and to protect Australia’s iconic places and heritage for the benefit of current and future Australians #beforeitsgone The Wilderness Society

18.01.2022 Hey Scott Morrison (ScoMo), Koalas are too precious to lose. Please make our environment laws stronger to protect the koala #beforeitsgone The Wilderness Society

18.01.2022 Two reports in the news today bring the whole EPBC review process and the federal Government's recent amendment passed by the House of Representatives into tight perspective. First, the total dummy spit by NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro, over changes to the Koala Habitat Protection State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP). Well, it was a dummy spit but it wasn't REALLY about the Koala SEPP. The Nats in NSW, as elsewhere, are struggling to maintain relevance in the face o...f encroachment from the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers, especially since the Shooters and Fishers added Farmers to their title. Let us also not forget that the Nats are lobbied pretty hard by the big agricultural interests in the country, not the everyday people on family farms, who care a lot more about handing their farms on to future generations. Second, a leaked federal review of the NSW Government's proposal to raise the wall of the Warragamba Dam has been scathing in its analysis of the inadequate Aboriginal heritage work done within the proposal's impact statement. The review found that concerns raised by traditional owners have been ignored and downplayed. Which brings me to the EPBC review and the amendment rushed through the House of Representatives by a liberal application of the gag to prevent any debate. The protection of our environmental and cultural heritage cannot be left to the whims of political debate and the mostly unseen influence of lobbyists from big business. We desperately need strong national laws, that incorporate legally enforceable national environmental standards, to prevent environmental and cultural destruction and species extinction. To support these new laws, we desperately need an independent regulator to take enforcement out of the muddied hands of the political process. That's why the Senate is so important in this current process. That's why we all need to make sure our Senators are aware of our feelings about the EPBC Amendment. https://www.theguardian.com//the-nsw-deputy-premier-threat https://www.abc.net.au//report-slams-waragamba-da/12656878 See more

17.01.2022 The State Government is divided about protecting our koalas. In the draft Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan the Planning Dept is allowing for the destruction of about a third of the critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland which is also critical koala habitat. They haven’t even taken on board the recommendations of the Chief Scientist! Hmm and the Federal Government wants to give more power back to the states for environmental approvals! 13.01.2022 Please stop the Federal Government from washing its hands of protecting our environment by signing the petition.

13.01.2022 Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Our international obligations require all Australians to protect our natural environment for earth's future generations. We can't just pass these obligations on to states and territories to manage without an established and agreed set of legally enforceable National Environmental Standards. The Wilderness Society

12.01.2022 Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Sussan Ley MP The current review of our national environment legislation (the EPBC Act) has recommended that legally enforceable National Environmental Standards should be the foundation of stronger environment laws. Please let the review panel complete their work and stop tinkering with the EPBC Act. The Wilderness Society

10.01.2022 The truth about the Koala SEPP To understand this is to understand the absurd koala implosion of last week. Because this is a fight for developer interests, not a fight about farming. This koala plan, a State Environmental Planning Policy, or SEPP, is only triggered at the point of development consent. It is only a factor when developers want to develop.

07.01.2022 Seven years of coalition government, and four environment ministers later, the Morrison Government still hasn’t put forward a single substantive legislative proposal for how it will address the wildlife extinction crisis.

06.01.2022 Scott Morrison (ScoMo) The EPBC Act does not meet the aspirations of Traditional Owners for managing their land. Our First Australians have much to offer by way of traditional knowledge of Country. Our environment laws must provide stronger national-level protection of cultural heritage and offer the proper opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians to contribute to decision-making. #beforeitsgone The Wilderness Society

02.01.2022 Tomorrow is the start of a Week of Action to #SaveOurKoalas This is being organised by the Save Our Koalas Action Group, which is a coming together of various Koala & wildlife groups throughout NSW. Save Sydney's Koalas will be involved in a vigil at the top of Martin Place (near the junction of Macquarie Street) tomorrow at 12pm - 1pm on Tuesday 3 November.... Please come along & join with us if you're in Sydney. We expect Premier Gladys Berejiklian to bring her Koala-Killing Bill to the Upper House of the NSW Parliament on Tuesday 10 November, unless we can gather enough support to make it unpopular. This current amendment Bill to reduce Koala protection in NSW has already been passed a few weeks ago in Parliament's Lower House, so it could be approved in as little as 8 days from today. Please email or phone your local Member of Parliament to tell them that you strongly disapprove of this Bill - called the Local Land Services Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2020.
