25.01.2022 First time I've been credited in a printed book. Exciting day for me!

23.01.2022 EDIT: Site was hacked but is being fixed. Best to continue avoiding it until all is clear so no one steals your details. Hackers suuuuuuck. --- It appears something has happened to my website as it is showing as "dangerous", so please keep clear of it for now until I figure out what is going on.... See more

21.01.2022 Yes, there are differences! Have you ever wondered? Read on. #communityreference

21.01.2022 Hi lovely followers! Just touching base - I've been very busy lately, but I'm still around. Just a friendly reminder: When requesting edits, don't forget to keep in mind that I may not necessarily be available when you make contact. It is wise to plan ahead, find out my availability, and book me in before leaving it to the last minute and assuming I can help you straight away. I have done many last-minute jobs, and fortunately I have found time for them, but planning ahead w...orks out much better for everyone involved. :) I've also recently been helping a couple of aspiring authors with developing their stories (brainstorming, providing feedback and advice on ideas, etc.), and I wondered if "novel consultation" (prior to actual writing or during writing) is a service people would like to have available. I would love to hear any feedback or thoughts on this idea! If it's popular, I may add it to my list of services. Thanks for reading. xx

20.01.2022 Happy Friday! Don't forget my services aren't just for authors. I can do short edits and writing jobs for anyone in any circumstance. Do you have an email you're dreading to type up for work? A cover letter you need checked before sending off? A social media post for your business that needs some proofreading before it is inevitably scrutinised by the public? Website content? An important letter? ... You name it - I'm happy to write it or check it. Enjoy your weekend!

20.01.2022 Due to popular demand, I've raised my prices again. I have spent hours battling to find the happy place between what's fair for me and what's fair for the client, and I think I've finally found the balance, for now. :) You can look at my updated rates here (https://www.facebook.com/pg/twtediting/services/) or find a more detailed list on my website (http://www.thewritething.com.au/services-and-rates.php). On a related note, I will also be getting a bit of a website revamp soo...n, enabling me to add more important info, and hopefully be done with that annoying glitch that undermines my proofreading abilities (please overlook it in the meantime :P). I cannot wait to polish these things off soon and continue to enjoy what has so far been a great year for The Write Thing. There have been some little wins and positive changes happening both in regards to this business and in other aspects of my life. I sincerely thank those who continue to support me and approach me to assist them with their own endeavours. It is always a pleasure. Lorin xx

19.01.2022 Hello lovely followers! Just want to share a quick grammar lesson with you that I was reminded of as I proofread a document this afternoon. Do you know of or use the word "comprise"? If so, how would you use it? There's a fairly good chance that, like many others, you would write it as follows: The salad is comprised of lettuce and tomato.... But that's actually incorrect. You don't need any words alongside "comprise". It sits alone. So the sentence should be: The salad comprises lettuce and tomato. If you really want to use "of" in a sentence like that, pair it with "consist" and "compose" instead: The salad consists of lettuce and tomato. The salad is composed of lettuce and tomato. Salad is kind of a lame example, but I hope that if you made it this far, you go away feeling somewhat enlightened. :)

18.01.2022 I hope you all enjoy the next week or so, eating and resting with family and friends. I will be on holidays until the 2nd of January, but email is always open if you wish to make contact in the meantime. Merry Christmas! - Lorin

18.01.2022 Happy New Year, all! The good news: My website is alive again. That was an unpleasant three months, but it's over! Please visit if you wish to. It got a nice makeover last year. www.thewritething.com.au... The bad news: I still don't have the time or energy to commit to large jobs for the time being. But please don't hesitate to contact me for a chat, as I wish to change these circumstances as soon as I can. For smaller jobs, I am always happy to take on resumes, cover letters, essays, etc. when possible. As always, I appreciate your continued support, and I will keep you all updated when things change. - Lorin

17.01.2022 Hire a proofreader. Just do it.

17.01.2022 UPDATE: Apparently the malware on my website is new and difficult for the fixers to fix, so my website is down indefinitely. In addition, I am having a rough second half to this year and am still only able to accept small jobs (essays, etc.) for now. Sadly, I am struggling to take on extra work, and this website drama does not help things at all. Your understanding is greatly appreciated. If you have any concerns or want to make contact regardless, please don't hesitate. We m...ay be able to work something out. --- Please do not use my website. It contains malware due to a hack. The company I've paid to fix this issue is being remarkably useless, so it's taking longer than I would like to be rectified. I will notify as soon as it is safe again, and in the meantime you can contact me by email or through this FB page. Apologies for any inconvenience.

17.01.2022 Long-suffering editors have noticed that the words THAT, WHICH, and WHO are a consistent problem in the writing of both native speakers and non-native speakers.... Who is for people: people who need people. That is used for essential clauses - elements that identify the subject. The paper he wrote was packed with misplaced modifiers that confused his readers. Which is for nonessential clauses within sentences: The paper, which was packed with misplaced modifiers, received a poor grade. Notice the comma, which appears before the word which. Sorting these out will earn you points for clarity every time! See more

16.01.2022 Show of hands! When you have to write something - for work or even personal reasons - do you legitimately wish you could get someone else to do it? Do you struggle to find the right words when the subject is a bit touchy, or when you have to ask for something difficult in an email without sounding pushy? Maybe you have business needs (social media posts, emails, etc.) and don't have the time to do them yourself. I want to determine whether this is a real and common issue tha...t people want a solution to. I know I personally prefer to write all my own stuff, but I am sure there are people who are entirely happy with putting it in another's hands. So, if you actually wish you could delegate, please let me know the following: What would you use a writing service for? What would convince you to pay someone else for the service, rather than continuing to do it yourself? What would make the service worth your money (if the idea of paying is holding you back)? Thanks in advance!

15.01.2022 This was so much fun to work on. I'm having a great time flicking through my copy! If you're going to be at RTXSYD this weekend and you like comics and you like sci-fi, be sure to find Glenn and get one for yourself. Even if you're not that into sci-fi, it's lots of fun. A heap of time and effort has been put into his creation of this universe, and it has well and truly paid off. Awesome characters and storylines, and just a wonderful comic series to follow.

15.01.2022 This one made me giggle.

15.01.2022 Attention lovely followers - my rates have officially gone up. Don't be scared. They were super low to begin with. Now they're probably reasonable. I'm always open to feedback on my choices, so if you can, please let me know your thoughts. I've spent the majority of today agonising over which numbers were just right, and maybe I'll have to go tweak it again. But here it is for now. If you want to have a gander, follow this link and scroll to the bottom. Thank you! http://www.thewritething.com.au/services-and-rates.php

14.01.2022 Today's editing advice: Look out for words like tired and tried, and form and from. Sometimes when we type quickly, the letters get jumbled and we type the wrong one. And just like that, the entire meaning of a sentence can change. These words look the same as each other, so are easily missed when proofreading. And they won't show up as a spelling error because they are valid words. If you can think of any others like this, feel free to share in the comments below. :)

13.01.2022 Spot the error.

13.01.2022 My website is getting some TLC/a makeover at the moment, so don't be surprised if it looks like it just got out of bed and isn't ready to see you right now. Just shoot me a message or email if you have any questions. It'll be up and running properly soon. :)

12.01.2022 I hope the new year has kicked off well for everyone! Just giving you all the heads up - I am raising my prices very soon. I started low in the beginning because I didn't think it was fair to charge a lot when I had less experience. But some time and work has passed, and I'm being told over and over that my work is a bit of a steal. :P I will try to use my best judgment in deciding the rates, but I'm reaching out to you guys as well. If you were looking to have a novel edite...d, how much would you pay for a professional job? If you needed website content written up, what price would you expect for that? Have a look through my services here or on the website, and if you have any thoughts on how much more you'd be willing to spend, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again for your support. I look forward to stepping things up a notch this year. :)

12.01.2022 I have the most amazing clients. Thanks for keeping me inspired.

11.01.2022 To OBLIGE and to OBLIGATE (Latin, to bind toward) both mean to bind someone to an action. Many people use them interchangeably. However, some nuance is involv...ed, and here it is: If someone has obliged you, they have done what you wished. Most readers of this page oblige me by not making harsh comments about members of political parties, English language learners, or various religions. If you are obligated, it means you are bound to act; i.e., if readers make such comments, I am obligated to hide those comments. I am much obliged that this page is (largely) a troll-free zone! 11.01.2022 Hi everyone. Just a little notice to inform current and future clients that I'm still restricted to small jobs (or even large jobs done slowly) for the time being. I've had to re-focus on relentless health problems, which has led to additional commitments in my day-to-day life. As a result there simply aren't enough hours in the week to work much more than I currently do, and when free time comes along I generally need it for typical life stuff (errands, social time, me time..., writing stuff like this, etc.). The situation isn't ideal and I'm sorry for any inconvenience. Please feel free to contact me for any jobs you require to see what we can work out, just keeping in mind I cannot get it done quickly. Appreciate your understanding. Lorin

11.01.2022 "Fewer." But why? Have a quick read here.

09.01.2022 Just finished editing this 12k-word sci-fi. So looking forward to reading and editing more as the series progresses. I love getting a glimpse into these incredibly creative minds.

08.01.2022 That awesome sci-fi comic book I edited recently is now available to purchase via an online store! If this sounds like your thing, go check it out and show Glenn Radburn Media some support. :)

08.01.2022 A beautiful review from one of my international clients: "Lorin edited and copy edited a book of my dads personal history. She understood and patiently implemented the style we requested perfectly with a complete mastery of her craft and uncanny general knowledge. We could not have published the book without Lorins help and sensitive advice. My dad and I are most grateful to Lorin and highly recommend her talent should you require an editor, copy editor, or proofreader." I ...recently received this by email from a past client who had been unable to send it prior to this. It warms me to know I had a positive impact on her and her family, enough so that she felt compelled to send the review two whole years later, long after the job was completed. Although I haven't been active in my freelance career for some time, this reminds me why I loved doing it and should continue if and when I can. Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and that 2020 brings good times to all. - Lorin

08.01.2022 Despite the accuracy of this caption (), it contains two very obvious errors. Any guesses ?

05.01.2022 For health reasons, I'm only taking on small projects at the moment. But it has been fun to get more involved with websites and essays. I recently had the pleasure of proofreading the content of the website for Forest Life, which has just gone live! I've watched this business grow from its very beginning, and can safely say there is no better place to go for terrariums in Sydney. They are truly passionate and dedicated to what they do, so the products are always beautiful and high quality. And Christmas is on the way... https://www.forestlife.com.au

04.01.2022 How does this even happen?

03.01.2022 My website seems to have a never-ending glitch that deletes spaces between words so they run into each other, no matter how many times I go back and fix them. This is literally the last thing an editor wants on her website... Any web geeks who can shed light on this, I am all ears. Rest assured this is not indicative of my skills.

03.01.2022 One last blog post for the year! Read on for some insight into the way we write holiday greetings, whether it's technically correct, and whether that really matters in the context. :)

03.01.2022 Living with addition can multiply your problems and divide your friendships. Subtract today!

03.01.2022 I love editing all kinds of written work, but I get an extra buzz when I'm contributing to something important and potentially life-changing. I recently had the pleasure of proofreading some work for a regular client of mine who is a counsellor for Transpirational. She runs affordable group (and individual) therapy sessions in the Sydney CBD for members of the transgender community - a group of people who are often isolated and have few options in regards to mental health needs. I'm so impressed by the work she is doing, and grateful to be a teeny tiny part of it. I'm sharing their website here with the hope that it may reach those who need it. <3

02.01.2022 Some grammar knowledge for your Wednesday: A common mistake people make is to write sentences like these - My parents took my sister and I to the park. They stopped to talk to my friend and I.... You aren't as short as me. He didn't like that flavour as much as her. At first glance, they might look a-okay to you. But here is how they should be written - My parents took my sister and me to the park. They stopped to talk to my friend and me. You aren't as short as I. He didn't like that flavour as much as she. Can you see why? To write sentences like these correctly, you just have to think about the way that would make sense if you continued the sentence beyond its end, or took away the other person from the scenario. See below. I have placed the wrong version next to the right version to highlight the differences - My parents took (my sister and) I to the park. VS. My parents took (my sister and) me to the park. They stopped to talk to (my friend and) I. VS. They stopped to talk to (my friend and) me. You aren't as short as me (am). VS. You aren't as short as I (am). He didn't like that flavour as much as her (liked that flavor). VS. He didn't like that flavour as much as she (liked that flavor). Hope you had fun! Thanks for reading. :D
