25.01.2022 Huge shout out to Remi Flynn-Lindsay today - Remi has been coming round for lessons for a few weeks now and she's starting to ride the big mare Winni just beautifully Also got to start some of our lateral work along the log today - takes more feel and timing than you might think, well done cowgirl #sunshinecoast #ranchriding #ranchversatility #wannabewinnable #makingemhandy #aussiecowgirl

25.01.2022 RAFFLE RAFFLE RAFFLE As many of you know, my dad died of cancer almost 7 years ago so this one is close to my heart - and if philanthropy isn't your jam, there are some absolutely amazing prizes I up for grabs, including 1 month of horse training at Tyson Performance Horses So head over and get your tickets now!... PS: Please feel free to share the hell out of this

25.01.2022 A few pics from yesterday's Ranch Versatility Show at Sundance Park / Shining S Performance Horses Last show of the year for Oakies Little Coyote and my little mare did a great job winning the Ranch Trail class with a respectable score of 72, placing 6th in the Ranch Confirmation Class, scoring a 66.5 in her first boxing and only narrowly missing out on an overall placing due to my being off pattern in the reining component. That said, a combined score of 199.5 still ranked u...s 5th out of a class of 16, which is a great result for a 4 yo mare in her first show in the bridle. A huge #thankyou goes out to Naomi Lee for putting on a great show, Equi-Shen for sponsorship of the trail class and Kim Thake not only for judging the event but also for being extremely helpful with pointers on how to improve our score after the event. A big shout out also goes to my cattle sponsor Critters Droughtmasters and, as always, my better half Brendan Newell for all his help around the show, keeping me sane and taking some great photos #ranchversatility #ranchy #oakieslittlecoyote #initforthejourney #horsetraining #woodford #sundancepark Tacchino Hat Co.

24.01.2022 Clancy getting fancy! Working on softness, self carriage, straightness and getting a bit of a stop on him #horsetraining #sunshinecoast #quarterhorse #palomino #drywork #morningrides

23.01.2022 7 reasons why I love my Wazz-A-Cow There are plenty of units on the market and while the Wazz-A-Cow Cutter isn't the first one I bought, it sure is the one I'm gonna stick with. Here are my top 7 reasons why 1. It doesn't get stuck - there's nothing more frustrating than your bag getting stuck on you mid-session!... 2. Built for Australian conditions - wind, dust, sand and storms, my flag runs all day, every day 3. Fat finger remote - you've already got your hands full starting young ones on the flag, and you may start feeling those early signs of arthritis too. Big buttons make for easy use 4. Runs on a car battery - perfect even if you don't have power in your pen, easy to recharge and easy to replace! 5. Strong and even pull - whether you're practicing short stops and turns, or use the full 30 metres, the flag pulls evenly across 6. Small, solid housing - no need to have a specific box for your unit, even if you work cattle in the same pen! 7. You're supporting an Australian business, so what's not to love?! So if you're looking to get a new mechanical cow, make sure you check them out #mechanicalcow #cattlework #horsetraining #aussiecowgirl #australianmade

21.01.2022 A bit of an insight into what our show horses get up to - Salty's Stylish Lass at her first time working cattle, and this filly sure got the goods!

18.01.2022 RANCH HORSE TRAIL - ROPING THE DUMMY Roping the dummy is a mandatory obstacle for the ARH Ranch Trail class so if you've never swung a rope off your horse, here's how to get ready Prior preparation ... I rope the dummy off every horse that comes through my program, from starting to show preparation. And since I don't fancy myself a particularly skilled bronc stomper, here's how I prepare my horses sack them out THOROUGHLY rope all 4 feet let them travel with the rope around the hind end And before you get on, make sure you have a good enough swing to avoid hitting your horse in the head Training for it The video below shows Clancy's very first time roping and how I set it up - Rub him down with the rope all over (don't cheat and forget his butt - you'll thank me later) - Start building the loop - Swing your loop on the side of your horse and touch the ground with the tip - Intruduce your horse to the dummy - I usually just guide them around the dummy a couple of times and let them smell it if desired. - Find the right spot you want to rope from (usually a couple of metres behind the dummy's left "hip" but the exact placement is up to you) - Rope the dummy - Start taking the slack out of the rope and make sure you wiggle it as you go. Note that you're not required to dally at a show (and I never dally the first time I rope) but our aim here is to progress steadily so you might as well get your horse used to it - Optional: walk around the dummy gathering up slack as you go. Stop and back up in front of the dummy and wiggle the rope and the dummy some (again, this is optional but it'll help you level up in the future) At the show - Always remember that your horse won't work as well in the show pen as they will at home. Train at 120% to get 100% at the show - Go SLOW. Show nerves can really catch you out so slow it down to make sure you don't accidentally hit that pony - Remember that your rope has to be secured to your saddle in a safe and legal way when you enter the show pen. Plan your tack accordingly. And that's about it - as always, I look forward to your comments, suggestions and questions! #aussiecowgirl #australianranchhorse #roping #ranchtrail #showseason2021 #showprep #horsetraining

18.01.2022 Salty's Stylish Lass - Obstacle work Bit of an update on Salty's Stylish Lass, the gorgeous filly owned by Kookaburra Falls Quarter Horses - with lines including Peptoboonsmal and Acres Destiny, this mare is bred to work and showing her curiosity, good mind and playfulness at her first time working obstacles. #saltysstylishlass #quarterhorse #sunshinecoast #horsetraining #ranchhorse #aussiecowgirl #obstaclework

13.01.2022 We're now easier to find thanks to our new property entrance sign. A huge #thankyou goes to Brett and Al Tomasich from Amazing Lazing for doing an absolutely amazing job with the sign and the rather intricate logo, as well as my beautiful husband Brendan Newell for hanging it I couldn't be happier with the result - bring on 2021

13.01.2022 What's new in 2021 First up, I'd like to say THANK YOU to all my clients, coaches, mentors, friends and family for an amazing 2020 - it's been a rough year at times but there ain't nothing you can't get through with a little help from your friends! Looking back, I've worked with around 30 horses this year as well as watching 14 of my coaching clients get handier and more confident - thanks guys, you rock!... On the business side, I've put a bit of thought into how to support both my clients and the industry as a whole better in 2021, so here are a few things coming your way SMALL GROUP SESSIONS Instead of clinics, I'll be running some small group sessions at my property. The idea is to make them more focused and specialised than clinics and put more emphasis on the horse. It's BYO catering to keep the cost low and numbers for each group will be 4-5 max to ensure everyone gets enough time and focus. So if you've got 3-4 mates who are keen, give me a shout and we'll put a custom session together for you! CLINIC BOOKINGS As I've decided not to run formal clinics at my place in 2021, you are very welcome to book me for clinics at an offsite venue. To enquire about bookings for Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail, Boxing, Ranch Cutting and Flag work, DM me or email [email protected] NON PRO SHOW SUPPORT We've got a bunch of ranch riding and ranch versatility shows coming up in Queensland and to grow a sport, we need competitors who are not just willing to give it a go, but are elegant and fun to watch! Going into the show pen can be intimidating and we've all battled with self doubt before, so having support when starting to show is essential. I'm known for being ambitious and hard working and I want to work with people who don't just want to show up but are willing to push themselves and come out strong - if this sounds like you, keep an eye out for further details in the next week or get in touch for an early insight! CAMPAIGNING SHOW HORSES I'm also looking to campaign a small number of Open Horses in 2021 - horses will need to be in training at Tyson Performance Horses, considered suitable for Open Classes and vaccinated in accordance with venue requirements. Stallions welcome. Please contact me for additional information and bookings. Here's to a great start to 2021 and may all your dreams come true this year

12.01.2022 Thank you Hazel Bow- Page - it's been a pleasure working with you

12.01.2022 Say hello to Sunny! "Noble Sunrise" aka Sunny, the pretty Warmblood X, has been started as a dressage prospect elsewhere but developed a bit of a bucking habit under saddle. So here he is, seeing what we can do to help him! Sunny is pretty reactive and a little bracey through his body, so the first week in my pen has been dedicated to getting him sacked out, focused and doing a lot of work on changing eyes and bending. ... Here's a quick insight into where he's at, sped up for your viewing pleasure #horsetraining #horsemanship #dressageprospect #warmblood #buckjumper #groundwork #aussiecowgirl

11.01.2022 Good equine dentistry is important to keep your horse in its best shape and here on the Coast it doesn't get much better than Andrew Williamson from Equine Dental Services (https://www.facebook.com/equinedentalservicessc/) - keeping b both my show horses and client horses feeling their best #equinedentistry #sunshinecoast #hinterland

10.01.2022 Becoming a ranch horse is hard work, so a bit of play is always encouraged - especially with the young ones! Plus, this mare is just a little bit of eye candy #saltysstylishlass #quarterhorse #aussiecowgirl #threeyearold #gonnabearanchhorse #horsetraining

08.01.2022 She may not be show material, but Callisto is a great little mare to teach you the ropes on the ground. Big shout if to my most mature client Susie, who, at 71, is still game to challenge herself and learn some new skills #horsemanship #groundwork #painthorse #callisto #sunshinecoast #aussiecowgirl

08.01.2022 Beau's 45 day update First time on obstacles for "Cassawark Dream Me Ten" - he's not the bravest horse but he's done an outstanding job for his first time. Starting to get a bit of a neck rein on him and he's coming off the leg much softer now #horsetraining #sunshinecoast #painthorse #ranchversatility #gettingembroke #aussiecowgirl

05.01.2022 Cassawynk Dream Me Ten is going home soon, so here's a bit of a look at his dry work at 80 days. Aside from ground manners, gate and buddy sourness, we've been working on obstacles, collection and breaking him into the bosal. Stepping over the shoulder is this gelding's nemesis so I'm pretty pleased with the start of the turnarounds too. Oh, and dude's got a pretty sweet stop ... #horsetraining #painthorse #cassawynkdreammeten #sunshinecoast #aussiecowgirl #patchy #flashy #furthereducation

04.01.2022 Yawns matter! First time in my pen, let's see if we can get a pony clubber ready for the 2021 Ranch Versatility season... #chunky #blueeyedboy #badgerface #painthorse #ranchriding #horsetraining

03.01.2022 The weather hasn't been playing ball so the Oakies Little Coyote and Salty's Stylish Lass had a bit of time off before starting show prep. Few things that need tidying up but it's always good to reflect on work in progress. #horsetraining #sunshinecoast #aussiecowgirl #oakieslittlecoyote #saltysstylishlass #ranchriding #ranchversatility #cowhorse #quarterhorse

02.01.2022 WHAT HORSEMANSHIP MEANS TO ME This will likely be a somewhat contentious post as many of us have different ideas about the topic, so read this within the context of what it means to me and the way I work my (and your) horses. For me, horsemanship is not a "thing" in its own right, and it sure isn't a competitive discipline (although there are more and more "Horsemanship classes" out there, for me they're still pattern classes). When I think of horsemanship, it's not about WHA...Continue reading
