19.01.2022 A bit of Friday fun: UP - An amazing 2 letter English word. Did you know that UP can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition.... It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky, or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in he morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a eport? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP. Don't mess UP. Send this to everyone you look UP in your address book . . . or not . . . it's UP to you. Now I'll shut UP! Thanks Marjorie for sending this to us to share :)

15.01.2022 If you've been enjoying 'zooming' lately and wish to mix it up a bit, then this hint we found (via the U3A Network's Newsletter) may be of interest: "ZOOM TIP OF THE MONTH How to Use Zoom's Video Enhancement Features... I have been a fan of Zoom's 'Touch Up My Appearance' function for as long as I have been using the product! However, they have added a number of additional video enhancements in more recent times. These include adjusting for low light, using HD video, and the always very popular Virtual Background feature. However, it is the new Video Filter feature that has the Network staff team perhaps a little too excited... Feel like wearing a jaunty beret to your next Zoom meeting? No need to trudge all the way to the wardrobe... Just choose the beret filter option in Zoom, and couple it with your favourite photo of Paris from the last time you went to France as your meeting background ..... Here's the link to the Zoom 'how to' page: https://support.zoom.us///115002595343-Video-enhancements Enjoy! Tracey Swadling"

05.01.2022 Stories from a couple of U3A students during the COVID lockdown .... Jan Smith said : Thanks to Zoom, Moonee Valley Library and our tutor Anne McRoberts, we are able to get together on Monday afternoon once a month and enjoy a book discussion. It was a lovely surprise when the library posted a box of books to each member and it was delivered to our doorstep. Our latest book was The Arsonist and the questions provided by the library meant that we could discuss the many perp...lexing themes of this book. The time passes very enjoyably as we experience each other’s different points of view. Thanks Anne for liaising with the library and leading our discussions. Carolyn Reeve told us : The Tuesday francophiles were delighted when John Mcmahon, leur professeur, announced in April that French classes would continue via zoom. It has been an enlightening experience, particularly being able to have contact with fellow classmates and John in closeup! The lessons last for an hour and a half and fly by. Every week John organises un mélange of activities involving comprehension, conversation and grammar in various ways: by video, questions, newspaper articles and sometimes in song - we join in if we know the tune! Also, we are currently reading and translating Albert Camus’ novel L’étranger (The Outsider). We are very lucky to continue our lessons in this way. It is an escape from the everyday reality of Covid 19! Nous vous remercions beaucoup John.
