25.01.2022 Good news! Our Internet Service Provider has fixed the issues with our service, and we are back online - including our phones. And while we might not be at the Centre again until Wednesday, you can phone us and leave a message if you need to

25.01.2022 Based on the reports of farewell events for ministers and others, April must have been the month for ministers to move from one church/circuit to another in 1919... From 'The Australian Christian Commonwealth' - 18 April 1919...

24.01.2022 Good News... The History Centre at 44A East Avenue Black Forest has re-opened for visitors on Wednesday afternoons between 1:00pm and 4:00pm In order to re-open there are few things that we need to do to keep everyone safe:... As much as we would love to see you, if you are unwell, please stay home and come when you are feeling better. If you would like to come to do some research, please call us on 8297-8472 to make an appointment. These appointments will be made for half an hour (on the half hour). All visitors will need to sign in when they arrive (and out when they leave). We have hand sanitiser for people to use. See more

23.01.2022 Our 2020 program of events is now available. You can grab a copy here - http://historicalsociety.unitingchurch.org.au//2020Program And keep an eye on the events list on this page as information will be added

23.01.2022 Following on from last week's 'In our collection - can you help?' here is another of the old photos we are hoping someone can help us identify. This one is also hand coloured but differs from last week's as this one is on a glass plate (instead of very thick card). We would love to know who this lady is

22.01.2022 Next year's Conference of the Uniting Church National History Society - Growing Up Uniting... The Call for Papers is now open. Details are in the image below...

22.01.2022 This church in Walkerville was the third of the Wesleyan Methodist denomination to be organised in the colony. With no musical instrument, the pitch for singing was set by the preacher. As hymn books were scarce and many of the flock could not read, lines of the verses were first read and then sung. It is said that on one occasion a preacher started four different tunes during the one hymn. [South Australian Methodist, 24 March 1944, p.8]

21.01.2022 I'm not sure what the role of a Circuit Assistant was, but 100 years ago, both the Balaklava and Jamestown Circuits were looking for one. This advertisement is from the 'Australian Christian Commonwealth' on 14 February 1919.

20.01.2022 UPDATE: The building has been identified - thank you Whitney for helping us know where it is :-) This building is the Marble View church. It was just south of Cummins on Eyre Peninsula, and in its life was a Methodist church, a Lutheran church, and a school. It closed in about 1960. Can you help us identify this building? We think it might be a church (maybe Methodist) on the Eyre Peninsula.... If you can help us, we would greatly appreciate it, so we can label the copy of the photo we have here at the History Centre. See more

20.01.2022 Continuing in the theme of our last few posts, here is another very old photo without any identifying features. The style of the photo, the colourings, and as well as clothing style of the photograph subjects suggests it might be of a similar age to the gentleman posted a few weeks ago. Like the others we have shared, there are no other identifying features to know who this is, or when her picture was taken. If you can help, we would love to hear from you...

20.01.2022 Good news! The technical difficulties that caused a problem with our website this morning have been resolved, and we are back up on the web again http://historicalsociety.unitingchurch.org.au/

19.01.2022 Have you tried phoning us today and not been able to get through? Sadly our internet connection is not working at the moment. This means our phone service is not working either. If you have a query, please email us (which we will get to when we can get to it again) or message us here on Facebook (which we can get to in other ways )

18.01.2022 Once again this year, sadly we have to close our doors for a little while due to the current COVID-19 situation in Adelaide. We will still be checking email and messages here, but any assistance we can give with research questions will be limited. Hopefully this will only be for a couple of weeks. Stay tuned to this page for reopening details.

18.01.2022 With thanks to Keith Conlon for sharing this part of our history...

15.01.2022 Looking back... As we consider how to remember and honour our service men and women this year, 80 years ago, during World War II, consideration was also being given to remembering the service men (and maybe women at the time) from 25 years prior (the first ANZAC Day)... From The Australian Christian Commonwealth - April 19, 1940...... http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page24177253 See more

You can see the full picture at http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page24176335 - as well as read the conference reports including the report from the Young People's Demonstration

11.01.2022 From 'The Australian Christian Commonwealth' - 24 Feb 1939... The Women's ministry (Women's Guild in 1939) was going strong at Holder Memorial Church!

07.01.2022 Look back - 100 years ago From the 'Australian Christian Commonwealth', 13 May 1921 (page 7 - report on Home Missions) ... The quality of the photo is not great, but it can still be seen that the Berri Methodist Church manse was probably not the most modern, nor comfortable place for the relatively new minister to start in!... It is good to know that the photo caption suggests 'A New Manse Projected' See more

05.01.2022 Discussions on church union had been happening for a while before union finally happened in 1977 (two world wars did get in the way of some of the discussions). Here is an update on the Church Union Discussions in 1919, from the Australian Christian Commonwealth - 25/4/1919. If you would like to read the full article, you can find it here: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article214560521

05.01.2022 Some of the ongoing work at the History Centre (44A East Avenue, Black Forest) with the help of the South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society...

04.01.2022 In our collection... This gentleman is unknown. Can anyone recognise him? If you can, we would love to hear from you at the History Centre. He is one of a number of very old (and hand coloured) photos that we have of unidentified people (others will be added as I scan them). There is no indication on the photo of who it is or when or where it was taken. It is printed on quite thick card and it looks like it might have once been in an oval frame.

02.01.2022 In our collection... This photo of Adare Castle (Adare Camp and Caravan Park - Victor Harbor) was taken in approximately 1910. It would be interesting to compare it to a photo taken from the same place now

01.01.2022 In 2021, we are planning to add to our valuable collection of historical records by embarking on an oral history project in the first half of next year. We need volunteers people to volunteer as interviewers or prepared to be interviewees.... Training will be organised for interviewers in association with Oral History SA and the State Library of SA.
