22.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS to our Under 16 Ukrainian Indoor Soccer Team, USC Lion, for their courageous SEMI-FINAL WIN today in a nerve-racking penalty shootout. Outstandi...ng effort boys! The USC Lions then went on to play the Final shortly after and were unfortunately defeated 1-3. Well done to the boys on their valiant efforts. We are immensely PROUD of all of the players, all of whom are students of Ukrainian School Adelaide and Hopak Dance School, for their achievements through their very first season. 16.01.2022 24 August 2020 Independence Day of Ukraine Wishing all our friends, community leaders and members of Ukrainian Community of South Austr...alia and Ukraine a Happy Independence Day of Ukraine. Independence Day of Ukraine (Ukrainian: ) is celebrated on 24 August each year to commemorate the Declaration of Independence from the Soviet Union which was adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament on 24 August 1991. Australia established diplomatic relations with Ukraine on 10 January 1992, with the Embassy of Ukraine in Australia opening in April 2003 and the Australian Embassy in Kyiv being established in 2014. Did you know? Ukraine is the largest country in Europe by land size (not including Russia). At 603,628 sq. km., it stretches from Russia in the east to Poland in the west, with the Black Sea running along its southern border. Its nearly three times the size of the UK and beats the second biggest country, France, by 50,000 sq. In recent years, Australias bilateral relationship with Ukraine has deepened substantially, with our two countries engaging on issues of mutual interest in multilateral forums and serving together on the United Nation Human Rights Council from 2018-2020. In 2016, Australia and Ukraine signed a Nuclear Cooperation Agreement which allows Australia to help Ukraine diversify its energy supply and enhances bilateral cooperation on nuclear-related activities such as nuclear safeguards, security, safety and science. The Australian Census in 2016 recorded 13,366 Ukraine-born people in Australia. 46,186 responses with Ukrainian ancestry. We are very fortunate in South Australia to have a small but energetic and hard-working Ukrainian community who have contributed greatly to all aspects of our society and economy and are passionate about sharing their unique culture and heritage with the wider community. Ukrainian dance performances, arts and crafts, and culinary delights can be found at many multicultural events throughout the year. We acknowledge the dedicated community leaders, members, and volunteers for making a wonderful contribution to our diverse multicultural state. Smaller gatherings and COVID Safe celebration will take place this year and the Premier and I sincerely thank everyone for their cooperation and efforts to keep everyone safe and supported during the pandemic. Our warmest best wishes to members of the Australian-Ukrainian community for a joyful celebration of Independence Day of Ukraine. ! Z dnem nezalezhnost! Hon. Steven Marshall MP Premier of South Australia Hon. Jing Lee MLC Assistant Minister to the Premier

07.01.2022 As we are unable to celebrate together this Easter, we encourage you all to help keep or community connected. Whilst we wait out this pandemic safely in our homes, we ask you to share with us your Easter memories & traditions. Whether it be photos or written memories, lets share this Easter Celebration together, as best as we can. The word for Easter in Ukrainian is Velykden, which translates to Great Day and it is one of the biggest holidays we celebrate. As our Orth...odox and Eastern-rite Catholic churches adhere to the Julian calendar, our celebrations are typically a few weeks later, this year Easter Sunday will be 19th April 2020. It is tradition that during the Great Fast (Lent), the faithful fast and abstain from meat and dairy products as much as possible. To show their joy and gratitude at the end of this time of fasting, people take to Church, baskets of food which are to be blessed and then consumed. The traditional Ukrainian Easter basket typically consists of hard-boiled eggs, various meats, butter, decorative paska, salt, horseradish, and cheese. Arguably one of our more famous Easter traditions is to intricately decorate Easter eggs known as pysanky. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, (to write). Typically created during the last week of Lent, pysanky are made by using a stylus and hot bees wax to draw clean lines and intricate patterns on the eggs that are then dipped into dye of various colours. from the family traditions you hold, to your triumphs (or hilarious failed attempts) making paska (Easter bread), show us your pysanky (Ukrainian Easter decorated eggs) or your richly stocked koshek (Easter baskets) ready for a virtual blessing. Reply to this post to share your Easter memories and photos with our community.

01.01.2022 In response to the recent demonstrations held in Belarus, the Belarusian community in Adelaide gathered at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Adelaide, St Andrew Parish, last Sunday to pray and show their solidarity in support against the brutality and victimisation of peaceful demonstrators. Rev. Fr. Evgen Kvasniuk delivered a church service. Members of the Ukrainian community, as well as Michael Atkinson, a former speaker of the SA Parliament who has been a long time supporter and friend to Ukrainians in Adelaide, were there to show support to the Belarusian community. We send our thoughts and prayers for peace to all Belarusians across the world.

01.01.2022 Adelaide Writers Week 29 Feb 5 March Serhii Plokhy, the Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University was one of the headline guests of Adelaide Writers Week 2020 and spoke on three occasions, each one of them to a capacity crowd for that venue. His weekend in Adelaide started with the Breakfast With Papers session inside the Adelaide Festival Theatre Star Café where he and Pakistani journalist, Sanam Maher shared insights into the current situation in their respec...tive countries and explored common denominators. The obvious ones were the fact that both countries currently have a celebrity leader Imran Khan, the test cricketer in Pakistan and Volodymyr Zelensky, the comedian in Ukraine. Identity, war, and learning to live with an aggressive neighbour were also explored. On Saturday afternoon, Serhii Plokhy spoke to a crowd of around 1,000 people about his book, Chernobyl. He won the Baillie Gifford Award for this book, and coupled with the interest in the Award-winning HBO mini-series on Chernobyl, there was a lot of enthusiasm for this talk, with some really engaging questions afterwards. Many of the audience bought his books and formed a long queue of more than 100 people for the book signing afterwards. On Sunday, he shared the stage with the Professor of History at Cambridge University and contemplated the fall of Empires, in this case, the Austro-Hungarian and the Soviet Empire. Plokhy, has, in fact written a book entitled The Last Empire on the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is a rare treat that the Adelaide Festival of Arts Writers Week committee invited such a highly credentialed Ukrainian author to Adelaide and it was good to see so many of the Ukrainian Community, including from Melbourne and Perth, come out in force to hear this really engaging and insightful speaker. Thank you so much Rostyk Becker for your review of Serhii Plokhy's visit to Adelaide's Writer's Week 2020
