20.01.2022 Looking back to last year, when we visited Dubbo West Pre-School, to screen over 60 children for speech therapy needs Fast forward to little over a year, we're still working with families in the Dubbo region, helping them to access care they otherwise wouldn't be able to. When we first started supporting those in Dubbo West Pre-School, the notion of online therapy was met some hesitation. But after a few sessions, families were achieving great results and the evidence was s...peaking for itself. Now, the whole world is seeing the benefits of online therapy! If you'd like to learn more about how Umbo can partner with your organisation, give us a message or email us at [email protected]

19.01.2022 A message from Ed Johnson, co-founder of Umbo and speech pathologist: "There are more than 1.2 million people in Australia who have communication difficulties, and for many of them, communicating with confidence is a challenge they face every day. Many people are treated differently if they communicate differently. This can make it hard to be confident about the way we communicate. We all communicate differently, and communication is a two-way street. I find that the best way... to understand someone else is to take the time to listen to them and their story. It’s not just an individual’s responsibility to be confident about how they communicate (whether it’s with body language, signs, or a speech generating device), it’s the whole community’s job to help each other feel confident. The more we listen to each other and learn from each other, the more confident all communicators will be able to be." #speechpathologyweek #speechpathologyweek2020 #speechpathologyaustralia

16.01.2022 Say hi to Kizzy - our new speech pathologist Kizzy has worked in a wealth of environments: schools, preschools, homes, recreation centres and more. She has also worked within a variety of different sectors. For example, Kizzy has worked with psychologists, within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector, and in rural Australia. Kizzy is a big believer in coaching people - that’s why she’s been part of several educational campaigns to help those in the allied health... community, the education sector, and parents, to support early intervention. The passion to deliver a high-quality service is at the heart of everything Kizzy does. She loves to get creative and collaborative, and is excited by the innovation in the online therapy space. One of Kizzy’s favourite things about person-centred online therapy is that it allows her to empower rural communities by coaching key workers in the areas of early intervention. We’re so happy to have Kizzy on board, but the recruiting hasn’t stopped there! We’re still looking for some amazing new speech and occupational therapists. If that sounds like you, or someone you know, get in touch - we’ll be more than happy to hear from you!

15.01.2022 Often in the social enterprise and non-profit sector, we’re asking ourselves are we the right people to do the job? And with Umbo, it is no different. We’re constantly trying to use our lived experiences to make the changes we want to see. For example, our 3 co-founders’ stories are very closely linked to the change we’re trying to make: Ed is a speech pathologist who’s lived in rural NSW most of his life, conducting therapy online and in-person for rural families for ...10yrs. He knows what both families and therapists experience in rural allied health, and has a strong passion for making the environment better for these people. Francesca is a mother to a child who has received speech therapy, and knows the pain that families go through when they’re trying to get the support their children need. On top of that, her vast experience in social impact means that she can help us keep on track and do the work that really matters. Weh helped set up speech pathology as a profession in Cambodia, so he knows a thing or two about making existential change and how we deal with all of the setbacks that come with that. In a previous life, Weh was also a physiotherapist who delivered therapy to rural families. Even some of our team members have lived experience of disability and therapy, which helps us to keep the people in need at the heart of everything we do. It’s so important to ask yourself these questions, because at the end of the day, it’s the change that matters - not who makes it. Do you think you could use your lived experiences to bring about social change for families in rural Australia? Get in touch with us and see how we can work together to help those in need.

15.01.2022 "Allied health needs to be more creative" The 'cookie cutter' approach has limited results in online therapy. Instead, we should be working towards person-centred goals. This allows us the freedom to use lots of innovative ways to acheive them. Ed Johnson works with many NDIS participants with complex needs, and the ability to get creative is essential for meeting the goals of the client and family.... Ed has developed an online therapy training course for those struggling to unlock the potential of online therapy. Modules cover issues such as technology, person-centred practices and cultural considerations. 13.01.2022 Is it time to stop and check for signs of burnout? As working parents, we juggle so many responsibilities, putting ourselves last in almost every situation. 12.01.2022 Many people think they've 'tried' TeleHealth, but it's so much more than just hopping on zoom and talking to your therapist In order to get the best results, you need a therapist that looks at you as an individual. A good online therapist also looks at technology as a platform to innovate; from combatting poor internet connections, to getting creative when trying to engage a client.... Drop us a message to see how a person-centred approach to online therapy is different from a prescriptive approach to TeleHealth https://kiddipedia.com.au/what-is-tele-health-and-how-does/

12.01.2022 HUGE congratulations to our co-founder, Ed Johnson, for being elected president of the board at Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) Regarding the recent appointment, Ed said: It will be a good opportunity to push the rural allied health agenda in a time where there are many great opportunities to support people to lead the life they want - the NDIS and MyAgedCare are maturing, digital practice has become much more accessible and efficient follow...ing the pandemic, and government is starting to acknowledge the importance of the role of allied health in improving people’s quality of life and keeping them out of hospital. SARRAH is a grassroots’ organisation advocating on behalf of rural and remote Australian communities in order for them to have access to allied health services which support equitable and sustainable health and well-being. 11.01.2022 What a year of growth it’s been! When we started the year, we had 5 staff members. Slowly but surely, we started adding team members in, and then we all know what happened around the world in March. As an online therapy provider, many people in the allied health space looked to organisations like us to either find work, or introduce them to delivering online therapy. And that’s what we did.... This year, we’ve trained over 700 clinicians, grew our team from 5 to 13, and conducted almost 500 hours of therapy for families across Australia. But the growth isn’t just in the numbers - we’ve also grown as people We had to make some significant changes to the way we did things in order to transition from a 5 person, Sydney-based team to an organisation with team members across Australia. It came with some bumps along the way, but we’re happy with where we are and we can’t wait to welcome more clinicians and families over the next few months. We just want to say a huge thank you to the therapists, families, and supporters of Umbo and our mission. And a huge shout out to those who have volunteered with us this year - without you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. We hope you’re all enjoying the Christmas break, and we can’t wait to see you back here next year. Happy New Year! #NDIS #OccupationalTherapy #SpeechPathology #OnlineTherapy #HappyNewYear

10.01.2022 given its widespread adoption and success, it is also a no-brainer for telehealth to become a permanent fixture of health care in Australia.
