15.01.2022 Over the past two and a half months, the Sitzprobe team has been hard at work to produce a series of videos, one for each show, presenting a snippet of what our teams had been working on before we all went into lockdown. We’re proud to announce that these videos are now ready to be shown to a wider audience! We’ll be posting these videos over the next 4 weeks so that our community can have a taste of 4 of our 2020 UMMTA Sitzprobe shows. The first video to be posted is from In...visible to You. Written by Christoper Johnson and Matthew Wilbraham, 'Invisible to You' explores frustrations of modern-day communication alongside the social impacts of technology with a fun and exciting new twist. With Steph’s increasing irritation towards Matt’s inattentive attitude, their journey to a friend’s dinner party causes further complications, leaving the couple ignoring each other entirely. Matt believes this is a complex punishment orchestrated by Steph for his failure to listen to her. However, as their friends also manage to commit to ignoring Matt as well, he begins to question whether there’s more to this than meets the eye. Is he... actually invisible? The cast has performed the song ‘Am I Invisible to You’, and a scene from the dinner party. 05.01.2022 In conjunction with the RENT medley video being released today, the set design team also wanted to share their concept for the set they were planning to build. Read below and see the reference images to get a glimpse of how the RENT stage could’ve looked like: The concept behind our set design for ‘Rent’ was to capture and emphasise the historical and contextual elements of the musical. We took inspiration from research and artists of the time such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, ...Keith Haring and photos of New York City streets in the late 80s early 90s. We wanted the set design to emphasise the historical topics of AIDS, drugs, and homelessness by having a worn brick streetscape with posters and street art that explicitly spoke to these issues and would be posted on the walls of the set and theatre encompassing the audience and encouraging them to learn more about the history of this time. We also wanted to capture the diverse mixture of artists, performers, buskers and homeless that comprised this world. We wanted to do this by placing the band on stage in a corner surrounded by random items, creating a sense of a makeshift homeless village where the musicians were the inhabitants. Using the random items from the makeshift home the performers would take out items to transform the street scape into the other locations in the musical. Ultimately, we hoped this set would visually expand on the struggle and fight for survival of the community represented in Rent. While we are sad that this production could not go ahead, I am grateful that I had the chance to learn about and design for this production of Rent. If the characters who survived drugs, AIDS and homelessness could find hope in their dark times, hopefully we can in this pandemic.
