14.01.2022 Hi everyone, done my first ever radio interview this morning on Michael Keelan's Weekend Garden show Thankyou to everyone who helped me and to the followers who came on board after hearing the show. I hope I have an opportunity to do this again in the future. It was a bit nervy but a great experience

11.01.2022 Here is the worm lasagna three days on. What a feast this has provided the worms! Here are my ideas on why it was such a hit. First of all blending and freezi...ng the scraps helps them to break down fast. Contrary to what some people think, worms do not feed on fresh material, as worms do not have teeth to bite into fresh scraps. It’s not until the scraps start to decompose that the worms begin to process them.....they have to wait until it turns soft and gooey. Also, worms require some ‘grit’ in with the scraps to help aid in the digestion of their food. Egg shells were added to the scraps and as they were run through the blender they were finely crushed, providing worms with some grit. Water was added to the blend, which helps create a lovely moist environment within the ‘lasagna.’ The layering of corrugated cardboard between the blended scraps helped soak up any excess moisture. Worms love a moist environment, but not too wet. Blending scraps with water creates a dense sludge, the layers of corrugated cardboard in the ‘worm lasagna’ provides air pockets for the worms to travel through and also helped provide beneficial aeration to the blended scraps. So, there’s three things that really turbo charge a worm farm - a good balance of food (both carbon rich material, nutrient and nitrogen rich scraps and the addition of a little grit), aeration and finally moisture (but not too much.) The worm lasagna provides all of the above! It was a great little experiment to show how you can speed up the processes occurring in the worm farm. With this in mind, it’s still OK to put your kitchen scraps in whole if you wish. They will break down in their own time and you will still be able to enjoy all the benefits owning a worm farm can provide. I did this experiment as a bit of fun, but it turned out to be a great way to demonstrate some worm farming principles. See more
