25.01.2022 You may have seen in the media that Rio Tinto destroyed rock shelters in the Pilbara region that contained evidence of Aboriginal occupation up to at least 46,000 years ago. This action was shamefully undertaken on National Sorry Day. It is important to understand that Rio Tinto had been issued the relevant approvals to destroy the rock shelters, and legally did nothing wrong. However, it was following the issue of the approvals to destroy the rock shelters that archaeologic...al excavations revealed evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back to 46,000 years. A reassessment of the significance of these rock shelters following the excavations should have been undertaken. The excavations revealed that these sites were highly significant not just to the Aboriginal community, but to the history of Australia as a whole. Best practice cultural heritage management should have revisited the situation in light of the results of the archaeological investigations. Ultimately, in our opinion, the significance of the findings should have resulted in the protection and conservation of these highly important sites. https://www.sbs.com.au//one-countrys-oldest-aboriginal-her

14.01.2022 We too stand with Greta and anyone standing up for what they believe in. Keep your voice loud (or at whatever volume makes you comfortable).

14.01.2022 To all of our staff, clients, friends, family and the community, your health, safety and happiness is of the utmost importance to everything that we do. As such, we are limiting all face to face contact to only unavoidable and essential work for the time being. Otherwise, it is business as usual. We hope that we can all continue to work safely together in these uncertain times and find ways to carry on while staying safe. Stay safe, stay well and stay at home if you can. Most importantly, take care of each other. We are all in this together.

11.01.2022 At Unearthed Archaeology & Heritage, we not only believe that black lives matter, but also that Aboriginal cultural heritage matters. Nowhere in Australia is immune to systemic racism. Nowhere. Nowhere in Australia is immune to the prioritisation of development over cultural heritage. Nowhere. ... No one should have their rights, lives or heritage be treated as less because of the colour of their skin. We stand alongside our Aboriginal community in the fight against systemic racism and completely avoidable deaths in custody. Let’s also stand up for the significant cultural heritage of our country and not allow mining to destroy sites that are older than the pyramids, colosseum and acropolis combined. https://www.msn.com//fears-of-another-juukan-/ar-BB156mNu
