23.01.2022 If you're missing museums, why not tune into this. The unique documentary series ventures behind the scenes at London's iconic Victoria and Albert museum, giving a firsthand look at some of the museum's world-famous art, design and performance collections.

23.01.2022 The cardigan has long been associated with librarians. This article discusses the impact this piece of clothing had on the perception of women. "The cozy knits allowed women to take control of the public presentations of their bodies, and shake off dated gender ideals. When women changed how they looked, often a social change followed close behind."

23.01.2022 We know this time of year is stressful. So why not take a quick study break to look at something truly beautiful? Behold the secret images hidden along the fore edge of these books.

22.01.2022 Meet Peter Deng. He came to Australia as a refugee from southern Sudan after spending a decade in a Kenyan refugee camp. He has now established an independent book publishing company at the centre of a worldwide boom in African literature. This article discusses Peter's life and the complexity of taking a largely oral culture, which passes on history and knowledge through stories and song, and transferring this into print.... Peter and others highlight why books matter.

22.01.2022 South African author and associate professor of English Barbara Boswell says, as a child, she was saved by books and by the care and compassion of the female staff at her local library. She endured gender-based violence but the library was a safe space. "It became a place where I could sit and just be in silence, while reading or being read to by an adult. It was a refuge I could run to when violence ripped at the very fabric of our life and threatened to extinguish life itself." Dr Boswell donated copies of her fiction book 'Grace' based on her experience growing up, to the library for their book club.

21.01.2022 Libraries come in all shapes, sizes and locations. We love the idea of a beach toy library. Do you have a favourite local Little Library? #happyfriday

20.01.2022 Whether they live in colonies or are solitary, stingless or stinging, there are over 16,000 known bee species in seven recognised families. Researchers compared data about the occurrence of individual bee species with a checklist of over 20,000 species to create a worldwide bee map. The study has confirmed that unlike other creatures, such as birds and mammals, more bee species are found in dry, temperate areas away from the poles than in tropical environments nearer the equa...tor. There are more in the Northern Hemisphere than the Southern, with hotspots in parts of the US, Africa and the Middle East.

20.01.2022 Stan, the 67 million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex specimen, was sold at Christie's New York for nearly $32 million. That makes it the most expensive fossil ever sold at an auction. Researchers reported in 2009 in the journal PLOS One how they had studied Stan to better understand how dinosaurs moved. Anatomical research on Stan revealed the T. rex had likely been through some vicious brawls; it had a broken neck, several other broken bones, healed ribs and a scar on its skull the same size and shape as a T. rex tooth, according to the Black Hill Institute of Geological Research (BHI). Normally, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) opposes the auction of such fossils. So how did Stan end up at Christie's, and who bought him? Read on to find out more.

19.01.2022 It's almost the end of the exam period. Just a few more days to go. Hopefully you're not submitting your assignments feeling like this. Semester break is coming. Hang in there!

18.01.2022 Remember, our libraries have copies of many of your textbooks. No need to go to these lengths. #fridayfunny

18.01.2022 Have you ever felt that you’re not a ‘reader’ because you haven’t read the classics? We usually ask people what are you reading? Maybe we should try asking why do you think you’re a reader?... Because you ARE a reader, no matter the type of story you prefer.

18.01.2022 Here's a list of book suggestions. Not new releases, or classic texts 'everyone should read'. We like the idea of highlighting books that are underappreciated or should have a wider audience. Is there a book you love that people should know about or add to their 'to read' pile?

17.01.2022 Next on our online tour, it’s a trip to our Southbank Library. We’d almost forgotten how beautiful it is. #southbanklibrary #campus #unilibrary

14.01.2022 Conservators at the National Library of Australia have unearthed one of the world's oldest boxes of chocolates, dating back 120 years to the time of the Boer War. The souvenir chocolate tin was discovered at the bottom of a box of personal papers from the estate of Australian bush poet Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson. The chocolate tin and newspaper clippings from Banjo Paterson's time as a war correspondent, were held by the author himself until his death in 1941, then passed... down through generations of his family before being acquired by the NLA last year. Now the Library has embarked on the ambitious task of conserving and digitising the collection to share with the world. Luckily the original chocolate is now in a temperature controlled environment!

14.01.2022 Many libraries around the world organise their collections by either the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress. But what if your collections need to be understood differently? The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council is transitioning to the Brian Deer Classification System, which was developed by the late Kahnawake Mohawk librarian Alec Brian Deer in the 1970s. Its taxonomy is based on the geographical locations of Indigenous communities.... "A lot of the subject headings that librarians use and a lot of the metadata norms that archivists use are really biased towards the Western way of looking at organizing knowledge, so it can be difficult to find resources for our researchers."

13.01.2022 That’s right. Mad Librarian citing skillz Ask us how. #FridayFunny

12.01.2022 With international travel looking unlikely for a while, there is still a way to see incredible artefacts. The Acropolis Museum has digitised it's entire collection. The newly unveiled Digital Acropolis Museum showcases exhibits in high definition, alongside a startling array of multimedia applications, including games, videos, and 3D images. It is also the first museum in Greece to go fully digital, leading the way for other Greek institutions.

11.01.2022 Congratulations! It's the last day of exams. Soon you'll have time to organise your summer reading pile or rearrange your bookshelves. Here are some suggestions for you.... #happyfriday

11.01.2022 Check out the 10 most bizarre rare books from American cheese slices too to one of the world's largest books as a form of protest!

10.01.2022 How did people secure letter before envelopes were invented? Read this article (and watch the video) so you can learn the art of 'letterlocking'. You cut a thin strip from the paper margin, folding up the message into a small rectangle, then poking a knife through the rectangle to make a hole to fed the strip through, looping it and tightening it a few times, creating a "spiral lock".... No wax or adhesive was required, but crucially, if someone tried to sneak a look, they would have to rip through the strip, so you would know the message had been intercepted!

09.01.2022 This sounds like something out of a heist movie. "The books were stolen in a raid on a warehouse in west London. Burglars cut holes in the roof and abseiled down into the building to avoid motion detectors, loaded the books into 16 large bags and clambered back up the ropes to make their getaway through the roof, police said." The Hague: Police in Romania have uncovered a trove of stolen "irreplaceable" books including first editions of works by Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newt...on. The stash of some 200 rare and valuable books which were discovered, had a combined value of more than 2.5 million ($3.2 million).

09.01.2022 We hope those assignment deadlines are on track. If not, our good friends at Academic Skills have lots of tips on time management and keeping to deadlines (link in comments). **does not contain any tips on cleaning your house

07.01.2022 We are delighted to share a new acquisition to our Prints Collection. This etching, Pareen (2018) is by Dr Vicki Couzens, a Gunditjmara Keerray Woorroong artist who lives and works in the Western Districts of Victoria. Dr Couzens is also known for her work reviving the creation of possum skin cloaks, a traditional practice of Indigenous groups across south-eastern Australia. Her work combines cross-disciplinary practices of cloak-making, painting, printing, installation, cere...mony as an expression and realisation of her culture, identity and language. She is a senior knowledge custodian of her Keerray Woorroong mother tongue and works at RMIT as a Vice Chancellor's Indigenous Research Fellow. Her work is a welcome addition to our collection. 06.01.2022 If you need some colour on a grey and wet monday, why not take a look through La Casa Azul, the Frida Kahlo museum. Tucked away in the suburbs of Mexico, La Casa Azul (The Blue House) is the former house of Frida Kahlo who lived there for the majority of her life. It's façade is painted in vibrant colours according to Mexican tradition.

02.01.2022 We have a new addition to our digitised collections. Cranks and Nuts was an annual magazine produced by the Melbourne University Engineering Students’ Club from 1938 to 1978. The issues include essays by teaching staff and students on engineering and social issues, photographs of new staff, reports of department activities and accounts of student excursions and activities. Most issues included a ‘Rogues Gallery’ of fourth year students, with photographs and biographical captions. You can view it online here: go.unimelb.edu.au/w9mi #cranksandnuts #engineering #studentsclub @engunimelb #digitisation #unilibrary

01.01.2022 If you’ve returned your books through the Baillieu Library return chute lately we are experiencing a bit of a delay. 11 trolleys were filled this week, ready for quarantine. Thanks for your patience *remember there are no fines at the moment #allthebooks #quarantine #librarylife #bookreturns #unilibrary
