22.01.2022 Congratulations to Associate Professors Thomas Oxley and Nicholas Opie, whose company Synchron has secured AU$52 million for US trials to further develop its implantable brain computer interface technology. Synchron's Stentrode device is the size of a small paper clip and aims to restore the ability of patients with paralysis to control digital devices through thought to support their functional independence. Trials already underway in Australia suggest the Stentrode implant can support people with severe paralysis to text, email, shop and bank online. Associate Professor Oxley was a recipient of the David Bickart Clinician Research Fellowship supported by the Dr David Bickart Bequest.
